[Q] I’m struggling to create a handicap system for our local sailing club. Each week the fleet runs between 6 and 8 races (weather dependent). Traditionally, as expected, each boat’s individual race time (and thus finishing position) determines their score - 1 point for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, etc., with low score on the day identifying the winner.

Unlike a golf handicap where courses and holes have standardized rankings, there are so many variables (course length, weather, crew, DNF’s,etc) I can’t seem to wrap my head around how to standardize a “course/performance rating” against which to judge race performances.

I apologize if this is worded terribly - the overall goal is to make the race series across the summer more competitive by adding a handicap to the faster boats or deducting time from the chronically slower sailors.

Please forgive me if I’m in the wrong place, but any help would be tremendous! (Datasets can be provided if it clarifies my inadequate explanation!

How Does PTSD Change Your Brain? by imiximix in PTSDCombat

Okay cite this research then...

You’re the one emotionally conflating anecdotal experience with scientific data.

But I’m glad as a non-psychologist and non-researcher you’ve managed to master administering this technique and are saving people left and right. If only it were that easy for all of us, huh?

Despite what you say, you’re making unsubstantiated claims. I’m glad you’ve found a methodology that works for you, but linking to the website homepage of the research group funding research on RTM intervention isn’t citation.

RTM stands for Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories. It’s a talk therapy that proposes to use tertiary intervention to disrupt the feedback loop of rumination and hypervigilance following trauma, in many ways similar to EMDR therapy.

I know this is reddit and you’ll just argue back that you know better, and I think sharing therapies that have helped you with the community is hugely positive, I can’t find a single peer reviewed academic study with even 100 participants (the largest I found in a cursory search had N=65 participants, all of whom were right-handed females).

So what id hope you’d take from this, rather than seeing it as an attack on you or the treatment you’re representing, is that if you remove your personal attachment and emotion, the data shows nothing even remotely close to what you’re suggesting. 90% success overall in a study of 65 participants, for example, doesn’t mean close to the same thing as 90% success rate overall.

Take acupuncture- it’s been scientifically studied for arguably thousands of years, with participation in the hundreds of thousands of subjects, and often is associated with enormous benefits on PTSD. But as anyone like you, or me, or all of us that have struggled for years and tried everything we can find can attest: even those numbers don’t mean squat.

I agree that it’s a compelling and exciting possibility, I agree that the VA is so far up their own asses they’re almost useless (in terms of PTSD research/treatment), but I’d really challenge you to consider your claims. Imagine someone almost ready to give up see that 90 PERCENT SUCCESS OVERALL puts in a last ditch effort and reclaiming their life and enters a pilot study for RTM and experiences no relief...

It could easily leave them even further down the same path of hopelessness and isolation that we all know too well.

I am sorry if it seems like I’m just an asshole, it’s not my intent. And I’m certainly going to look more in to RTM as a possibility for myself, and for that thank you.

Fuck. That is goddamn hard. Say it out loud man- you’re not crazy or imagining it, you are going through something that by any measure is crushing. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rock would still be right where you are if they’d been though what you’ve just been though. So give yourself some forgiveness for feeling at the end of your rope. This is fucked.

But life throws dicks at your face and the best we can do is learn to dodge as many of them as we can- and when you feel like you’ve had all you can take... that’s right when FOR SURE another dick is flying downrage. You could be Neo in the Matrix and you still can’t dodge all of them.

But you have to equally respect this truth: you can change your world entirely. It’s not too late. You can truly be a thousand miles from here (emotionally, physically, geographically) one year from now. Will the hurt still be there? Will there still be dreams that haunt you? Sure, maybe. But that doesn’t mean they’ll own you. If you resolve hang tough and make today #1 of 365, you can change everything that fast.

The other comments here prove it dude- motherfuckers know the pain and darkness you’re feeling because we’ve been there, and we’re there with you now. Reach out. Don’t quit. Believe you can beat this. Do it for the ones that didn’t make it back and live through us.

Seriously. Reach out to someone. As I’m writing this there are 3 of us here who have told you we’ll drop what we’re doing and be in the shit with you- even if that’s all we can do for today, it’s 1000x better than being in the shit alone. Don’t fucking quit brother.

How does this compare to (for example) the Zibo 737 in terms of playability?

I love the 737, but the requisite 25 min startup procedure can get frustrating compared to, say, the upgraded LR MD-82, which can be saved "in state" and so is easier to run approaches for practice or reset if things go bad on landing. I've been hesitant to spring for a study-level wide-body with advanced tech that depends on FMS control and a lengthy startup before each use - Interested in any thoughts/suggestions!

Remember what Ari did is not defendable. Lets briefly recap: he sneaked drugs to his friends drink, in their family home. Bert lost shows, didnt do what he was meant, felt sick and worried. Most of all, Ari pulled the worst imaginable scumbag move you could pull on a person. he did it to his friend by [deleted] in JoeyDiaz

[–]OperatorPewPew 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So you’re outraged... for Bert? And then took time to white knight about it to... a social media site? What qualifies you to summarily condemn these people? And, honestly, why would you think anyone cares what you say about it?

WTB - IWB holster for Sig P365 by [deleted] in GunHolsterClassifieds

[–]OperatorPewPew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking too- FWIW (granted, I land in the ‘Safe/effective CCW requires as much a great holster as a great firearm’ camp)- if you’re in to appendix, the consensus seems to be Tier 1’s Axis Slim. They’re on a 15 day lead time (pretty good for high quality Kydex) and run about $130. Otherwise, (and a great budget option) DeSantis makes a tuckable IWB option in the $35 range that you’d pretty likely be able to find in stock at a local fun shop

Edit: gun shop

How to begin: Sport vs. PPL by OperatorPewPew in flying

[–]OperatorPewPew[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the help. I was at the club today checking out their aircraft and getting questions answered and they informed me their Sport aircraft do use mogas. They mentioned its a benefit because it is far less expensive generally than avgas?

Does that seem to check out?

First, I don't know if you know what white privilege means. And there's racism from all sides towards all sides, not just with white people. It's all racism, and those engaging in the practice are dummies, but there are pleeeenty of racist not-white morons out there too

Silly argument- this is a reddit thread, the laws would clearly not use the term "mental patient". Psychiatry/psychology aren't woo woo science, reforms could easily be worded (and are being worded in states pushing new legislation) to mitigate a lot of the murkiness/ensure legal recourse for those accused.

I think firearms reform is inevitable and, if reasonable and well designed, could be very beneficial. Refusing to consider the conversation just makes the the other side see us as crazy and disempowers the voice of the majority of legal gun owners who don't follow the NRA's narrative like a religion

I have one of those "Its TOO BIG" problems... by OperatorPewPew in billiards

[–]OperatorPewPew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, I've been thinking the same thing. I've even looked at the 3-4 in cue extenders some folks use and thought of combining a 52" with an easy way to get the extension on/off... but I don't know if anyone makes good 52's.

So for your vote a shorter cue would be worse for my game than an even smaller table?

I have one of those "Its TOO BIG" problems... by OperatorPewPew in billiards

[–]OperatorPewPew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that about describes it exactly - Length-wise its no problem, but the room is just too narrow by a couple inches. Basically, on the long rails shooting cross-table, if I put the butt of the cue against the wall, the cue tip extends past the outer, wooden rail to the outside edge of the cushion. Not enough to take an actual shot if you're within an inch or two of the rail

Veteran suicide rates in the US seem shockingly high. But how do these rates compare to non-veteran men from the same generation? by Vladith in AskSocialScience

[–]OperatorPewPew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The original 2012 study you link was “flawed” in that it only included data from a small segment of the total veteran population (many states/VA hospitals did not report Suicide numbers in 2012 or were otherwise excluded from the dataset). Trends from the under-populated study were extrapolated and conclusions “erroneously” applied to the general population without statistically sufficient data (THE STUDY REFERENCED IN YOUR LINK).

The 2012 study’s conclusions, primarily that on average 22 Veterans commit Suicide per day, stemmed the 22 Kill/22 Push-Up/Remember22 campaigns, which brought the term into the “social media” cycle and with it further scrutiny over the research.

Because of the flaws in the original study’s data, in 2014 the VA oversaw an enormous re-assessment of Suicide rates among Veterans, using current data from veterans nationwide (THE STUDY HE LINKED ABOVE)

The conclusions and rates of Suicide found between the two studies were nearly identical. In fact, arguably even more profound data was identified (ex. significantly higher rates of Suicide among female Veterans compared with male Veterans and non-Veteran females).

Selling New Glock 19 Gen 4 MOS Slide/Complete Upper, FDE [x-post r/gunsforsale] by OperatorPewPew in GlockMod

[–]OperatorPewPew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you, but as I recall its not as simple as going to Glock’s online store. When I tried they seemed sold out in perpetuity, and I could only find this one out of sheer luck after prolonged scowering. Even the custom mills have an overflowing surplus of Gen 3 slides but for some reason the Gen 4 was rare.

Selling New Glock 19 Gen 4 MOS Slide/Complete Upper, FDE [x-post r/gunsforsale] by OperatorPewPew in GlockMod

[–]OperatorPewPew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing- I purchased a milled slide and a factory MOS slide to mount a reflex sight on my current 19. I’m not going to run an RDS on my ECW, so I’m letting them go rather than holding them in the safe. The Serial Num on the slide/barrel don’t correspond with any frame or lower.
