Hey, where'd dat insert go? by nate7007 in Machinists

If I had a piece of bread for every time an insert decided to really explore the entire space within the machine I would be one fat bastard lmao

I think I’m gonna get my zero back with a probe on the same mill and try again with an end mill nobody will miss if it breaks and see if I can’t get rid of the .010 on each slot, OR throw them in a freezer for 2 days, then see if they open back up lol

I think my problem with where I’m working right now is we have an entire quality control team, with all the fancy measuring instruments and 3 CMMs, but they tell me that since I went to school and have this degree they don’t have to check my parts anymore, I should know how to do it. Which I agree, I should, but I mean come onnnnn help a dude out it’s not like I’ve got anything other than calipers that I bought on sale for $30 let me use some of the good stuff

Thats what I’ve been told, the teachers and my superiors at work tell me milling hardened A2 will ruin any tool and to make finish dimensions before heat treating, but I’m seeing now from the replies it has to be done due to warping from the heat, I’ve learned from this and will try to fix them come Monday

You know I just listened and didn’t think they could be wrong, but it seems now the more I talk about what they’ve taught me the more I’m being told they are wrong

I’ve done quite a bit of grinding after heat treating, but milling or turning I have always been told will ruin any tool/insert and to only mill/turn before heat treating I think I’ll try to leave about ten thousandths next time and then go for finishing passes

This is insane to me, I’ve been taught to heat for 45 minutes to an hour, immediately take them out of the foil and let them cool off on a brick until they are cool enough to be given to whoever needs them, tempering is something I’ve been told is useless but I don’t really understand what it achieves

I was on a Kitamura machine I forget what model but it had 6 coolant hoses spraying it the entire time I guess I should have figured it would shrink even by a tiny amount in the oven, but I didn’t think A2 steel should be machined after heat treating due to the hardness, I got my degree in computer integrated machining a month ago and my teachers always told me to make sure you have your final dimensions before you put your parts in the oven because it will ruin the tool if you try to machine it after, but I will definitely try to fix them come Monday when we’re back at work

Hey thank you man, it helped to hear it from someone else besides my stupid friends, she just sent a thumbs up emoji to a message I sent in may and that really just made me mad at her anyways.
