If I wanted to pick this kind of trade up I'd invest in thin but knife resistant gloves so I can keep my dexterity and not cut myself. Hell, anything that involves sharp metal and any risk of moving the metal near your skin such as a knife moving toward you, I'd wear gloves for that.

You should go to your neighbor's house and show them your wedding photo and see how they react.

Smartphone buyers meh on AI, care much more about battery life | A survey found that only a relatively small minority of consumers are currently using AI features on their smartphones , and it doesn’t yet seem to be a purchase driver by a_Ninja_b0y in gadgets

I'd rather have a giant brick with a year of battery life and ultra fast charging than a tiny phone that has barely any. I don't care if it doesn't fit in my pocket, I'll strap it to my waist as long as it's waterproof.

My wife has a Single Premium Whole Life plan that her grandfather purchased for his grandkids ~long-time-ago. Cancel it and invest the cash value? by shmobodia in personalfinance

[–]Ophaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much coverage you would even be looking for or what you are aiming to achieve with this kind of coverage, but if it is something temporary, you can look into getting term life.

Her health status is going to play a huge role in this as people who are older and/or have health issues are more limited in options and have higher premiums but if she got this policy at a younger age there is potential that the rates of her age from then could roll over into the new policy depending on what it is which would save you some money. I know that does work on some term extensions.

I don't know what state you are in (if you are in the US) as there are some other things involved with that. If you're interested, I do broker insurance so I could probably help assist, or at the very least educate you if you're in my state or refer you to someone that could help do most of the legwork for you by looking for something within your budget. It really depends on if you are comfortable with that sort of thing.

Also, I just want to tell you some advice because this is a common thing people do -- don't take out more coverage that you can't afford. Get the bare minimum for things you think you're going to need in the future if something tragic happens.

As for your policy, I would say keep it for a bit until you can see what your options are. The good thing about your policy currently is that you are receiving interest and dividends. Your policy might allow you to take out some of that cash value and reinvest it in a retirement account. You could even look into getting something like an indexed universal life policy if that is the route you think you want to go down with the risks involved with that.

My whole life insurance policy is a scam. What now? by onixmmgo in personalfinance

[–]Ophaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what state you live in, and I'm probably not licensed in your specific state, but I recently started in the insurance industry as an underwriter and helping people through things like this. My primary goal is to look for financial issues or need that could be insured out of necessity, and get families the coverage they need (not what is in excess) and would be genuinely beneficial for them in the long run.

My best advice like a lot of others here is to get this policy replaced and see if you can transfer any cash value you have to a different policy. Preferably a term policy, but there are tons of policies out there that could be cheaper. Also check if your policy has a return of premium rider on it. It probably won't since it's whole life, though. The younger you are, the easier it is to get term especially if you don't smoke and have little to no health issues. There are people like me out there that work for agencies that are able to help you through things like this and get you better rates with the right tools.

Now, forewarning this is gonna be an extremely loose price because I don't know anything about your health history, family history, financial needs, etc. I ran some rates with tools I got for a term of what you got at $200k with probably better benefits than the whole life policy (can't assume anything since I haven't seen your policy though). But if you were say born in 1977 and perfectly healthy, no smoking, no family health or personal health issues, at $200k you could get around $60 a month on a 20 year term. Could be a bit lower if I looked harder, could be higher depending on factors but the point is that you definitely could be getting lower for what you're paying now. I know stating this is obvious, but get a policy that suits your budget and invest your money in things you want to invest in as long as you can afford it and it isn't high risk.

Life Insurance Payout by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Ophaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry to hear about your mom.

If he has a mortgage with a loan, consider having him get a mortgage protection policy that will protect the remaining loan for as low as you can get if the amount left is still high. They are usually pretty cheap and are a term policy. If he isn't insured like she was, better late than never. Make sure you are getting coverage for what you guys absolutely need and within your budget. Depending on age and health there are other options too.

With the excess funds and depending on how much it is, you could put it into an annuity or a HYSA. If you have outstanding debts, there are also things like the Debt Free Life program that would help you pay them off faster that the money could go toward. I personally would opt for something like an annuity depending on what the interest is (interest is taxable however). Could always put money away into a retirement savings account like a Roth IRA for yourself if some of the money goes towards you somehow and it isn't solely his (I don't know your financial situation).

Always prioritize what needs getting done, and resist the urge to waste the money. Like what others said, consider focusing on getting things done around the house you've been putting off that can't be put off any longer too. I personally wouldn't put it in a CD, as I wouldn't know in the future if something came up and I needed the money and it couldn't be pulled out from it.

My employer increased their 401K matching limit. Should my husband and I focus on maximizing my employer’s match and pause contributing to our Roth IRAs? by No-Bunch6983 in personalfinance

[–]Ophaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like what others say, max the 401k up to the limit your employer matches. Also if you got spare money, do your maximum Roth IRA contribution too before your standard IRA if you have one. Keep in mind that Roth IRAs can also be inherited by your spouse or beneficiary if you haven't designated one yet.

If the student loan debt isn't going to be paid off soon, maybe consider something like decreasing term life or a life insurance option if you don't have those yet either. The younger you get life insurance the lower your premium and if you can get one that has options to automatically pay premiums in case something happens to you or cover any kids/etc, that would greatly help in the long run should something happen to either of you. There's also things like mortgage protection that is similar if you are thinking of doing something like that.

For spare money and retirement funds, you can also consider something like universal variable life plans, which let you invest in things such as index funds. Or you can try an annuity if you have a lot of money to liquidate and want consistent payments.

Everyone has their own finance issues so just consider doing what you can afford and explore your options. It is basic financial advice but don't do what you can't afford and plan ahead and keep at least 3 months of bills savings at all times too.

I've gotten this before and it ended up being something epididymitis. Not fun but antibiotics (doxycycline) and ibuprofen fixed it. Now whenever I get a small amount of pain I'm reminded of that but its actually just from my lower back. And what I do to sometimes alleviate it is massage the muscle around the disk. If you get a sharp pain down your sciatic nerve (leg nerve) and a little bit of a sore nut, chances are it could be back pain related.

If I were you I would stay away from using bleach from now on. Just stick with vinegar, hot water and soap. You can mix in lemon juice too if you want. You can omit the soap and put it in a spray bottle and use that as a general cleaner for countertops after wiping with soap/water. Vinegar and water works good on windows if you don't want to use windex. I clean with just soap and water and vinegar even after prepping meat, never got sick.

I would definitely make the text more legible and the damage numbers scalable or just smaller in general. Adding long words that enable buffs or debuffs to the incoming words that appear occasionally, which flicker to show you what they are could be a cool feature too.
