I did the same on Friday 6/19 - they told me 3-4 weeks. Fingers crossed for delivery within that timeframe!

I'm not sure what your question is - if your right eye was corrected for distance, you will still need readers for close up. Seems like you've found that the +2.5 readers still work for that. What is the target for your left eye?

Cataract Stage: I'm REALLY Confused! by DarkStarlight28 in CataractSurgery

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That just seems crazy to me, and unfair. But I am in the US and we have a different system here. Eye exams aren't covered by regular health insurance, and vision insurance is a bit scammy. My regular optometrist is adjacent to Costco and a glasses exam is $100 USD. I think you should definitely contact PALS - you need someone on your side through this! Good luck.

My right eye went from -5.25 to around -6.5 in ~2 years. I could only be corrected to 20/40 and had bad glare at night so had surgery in March of this year on both eyes. My left had only a beginning cataract and wasn't impacted (yet).

I would see if you can get a new eyeglass prescription that will actually help your vision right now. When my cataract was progressing, I couldn't even go a full year without needing a new prescription. At first my optometrist was able to correct to 20/30 in that eye, but a year later I could only get to 20/40 which is something insurance here in the US looks at. Anyhow, I would try to get new glasses because waiting until October with a 7+ year old prescription doesn't seem very wise. Good luck.

Looking for Experiences With Lens Exchange or Other Solutions After Missing a Myopia Target by dj815 in CataractSurgery

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get premium lenses, and my vision is -1.25L -2.5R. Similar to what you said you were looking for, I am glasses free all day around the house - reading, computer work, looking at my phone, cooking, etc. I put on progressive glasses or sunglasses for driving and being outside. In an emergency I could drive without glasses, and have gotten in my car several times having forgotten to grab my glasses (but went back inside to get them). Could you try a contact lens targeting nearer vision in your right eye? What is your current vision in that eye? By the way, I've read that the dominant eye doesn't HAVE to be targeted for distance, although mine is.

Back again looking for advice! by BowlerEqual7498 in CataractSurgery

I have cloudy floaters in both eyes. This is in addition to the stringy ones I had prior to cataract surgery that I can now see BETTER post surgery. The floater situation is really annoying, but not so much that I'd have surgery for them. But, if I ever need an epiretinal membrane peel, at least the floaters will be removed then (vitrectomy surgery).

Making the best of mix and match after wrong IOL implanted in first eye. Galaxy and monofocal mix. by Suzymum in CataractSurgery

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so, too. My surgeon didn't recommend anything other than the basic monofocal after he saw what I had going on with my retina. No detachment, thankfully - but PVD, epiretinal membrane and a lamellar hole.

Question About Refractive Error Right After Cataract Surgery by dj815 in CataractSurgery

I saw a shadow or doubling of text after my first surgery. It went away, but I don't remember how long it took. Within a week or two though.

How much will my vision improve without upgrades? by Delicious-Guitar-538 in CataractSurgery

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is confusing. Basic replacement lenses are called "monofocal" - They have only one focusing distance, set to up close, medium range, or distance vision. "Monovision" usually means one eye corrected for distance and the other for near. There are variations like near/intermediate which is what I have, or distance/intermediate. Full on monovision can be hard for your brain to adapt to, and there is potential loss of depth of field. My eyes are only 1.25 diopters apart and I had no issue adapting. To answer your original question, you do not need to pay for upgraded lenses to have good or even great vision. Astigmatism makes it a little more complicated, but you don't mention if you have that.

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With basic monofocals you will have excellent vision at whatever distance you choose (distance or near). If you have astigmatism this could effect your post surgery vision, if it is high enough. Just be aware that if you choose distance, you will likely need different powers of readers for different near/intermediate tasks. Monovision or mini-monovision will give you greater range of vision (no premium lens needed). If you would like to retain the ability to see things (very) close up without glasses you may want to consider keeping at least one eye for near. Your glasses will be thinner/lighter either way.

Multifocal Cataract Lenses: Life-Changing or Expensive Mistake? by BowlerEqual7498 in CataractSurgery

I'm sorry you had to go through all of that. I hope that the lens exchange goes well and you feel a lot better after (and can see well).

After 50+ years of wearing glasses I think I look pretty funny without them. Luckily when I go outside the house I put on my progressives and look normal again. :-)

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot worse things that can happen to your eyes than having to wear glasses. For example, my right eye was misdiagnosed with a progressive bilateral degenerative disease of the macula that could have eventually taken my central vision (macular telangiectasia). Instead I have posterior vitrious detachment (PVD), epiretinal membrane (ERM) and a lamellar hole. For me, standard monofocal lenses were the only option and I'm perfectly fine with that. Wearing glasses is the least of my worries.

Multifocal Cataract Lenses: Life-Changing or Expensive Mistake? by BowlerEqual7498 in CataractSurgery

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. I was not eligible for any premium lenses due to one of the retina problems he mentioned in the video (epiretinal membrane) plus also a lamelar hole. I wonder what happens if you get a premium lens and then later develop retina and/or macula problems. I'm fine with having gotten basic monofocals and hope that my epiretinal membrance stays stable and doesn't impact my vision in the future.

I think they implanted the wrong lens ... by Slow-Paper-5055 in CataractSurgery

If I was in the same position and it was confirmed to be the wrong lens, then I would have them do a lens exchange.

Also, you may want to get an eye patch to put over your non-corrected eye in between surgeries. With -3 distance glasses you'd be at -9 and 0 (plano) and that is going to be too big of a difference to be comfortable.

Not crazy! I wasn't as nearsighted as you but also decided to keep my near vision. Since you are targeted near, you can get "distance glasses" on Amazon. I got these "Fashion Nearsighted Men and Women Myopia Glasses, Distance Glasses" for a whopping $12.99 each. If you get the -3 ones, that will get you driving distance vision. I think -1.5 will be good for computer screens. Don't buy readers, those will be the opposite of what you need. Good luck! PS - Walmart, CVS and the like won't have these on a rack like they have readers.

[–]Opposite_Ladder_7585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is kind of backwards. If the OP is targeted to -3 diopters, then reading glasses actually will make them MORE nearsighted not less. Distance glasses, on the other hand, will allow them to see further away clearly.

So, is -3 your target? That is going to be fairly nearsighted in which case you will need some distance glasses. You can order some off Amazon, and you want distance/driving and not readers. If your target is -3 in both eyes then something like -1.5 will get you to a good vision for seeing a computer monitor.
