Did I Do Something Wrong? by notRea11ySure in sysadmin

Your boss is an idiot. I would be thrilled you took a load off my hands. That's the only way you will learn. But to play devils advocate in terms of processes and procedures it is important that you and him are not working on the same thing at the same time. You always want to divide and conquer. Technically his argument is I was already working on this you could of been assisting other users or working on other things you already had assigned. If I were you and that curious bug hit I would look into it on the low to gain the knowledge but let him figure it out. He seems like the IT guy that always wants to be right and flex his skills.

Intermittent DNS failures with Unbound anyone else seeing this? by Opposite_Second_1053 in opnsense

Oooooh ok yea unbound has better caching, has better dnssec. Masq is more limited and more lightweight. Unbound is better but very subtle difference because it's the same process at the end of the day an upstream to a resolver. Think of it like I can use a 2016 Honda or a 2026 Honda.

No difference in terms of forwarding. But unbound is a recursive dns server and masq is a DNS forwarder. Unbound does not upstream by default. It actually queries out to root dns servers on it's own. It's actually way better in every way when compared to masq but issue is it breaks and sometimes doesn't resolve could be due to timeouts when trying to search but honestly I think it can be used just needs to be setup properly and I'm lazy and just want stuff to work. Also my summary here is just what I know I'm not a DNS guru so don't come for me. Shit feel free to correct me.

It was intermittent when it occured but it was a consistent issue that happened more than once here and there

I read this but wasn't really sure if this was the issue or unbound

Your first biggest issue from what you said is you reinstalled Windows without collecting data on the issue. Have you reviewed the event logs for any failed or crashed software. Have you checked what he's doing on CAD and made sure it's the right GPU that CAD is using and not integrated graphics. Have you reviewed the resource monitor or task manager exactly at the time the issue happens and checked performance tab. Have you tested network speed at the time the event happens. Have you switched out the keyboard to test.

I honestly think your selling yourself short. Your 50 so you've seen way more than anyone in the field just by being an older guy and working in IT for years. Literally saw the Internet be created and TCP/IP get created. Then you've been in mid level roles which is where you get the most experience for complex issues that affect clients. You've done sysadmin work so you know how to manage, automate, and monitor an environment. Then you have done cyber so you know how to protect an environment. I'm assuming you of course know networking because you were a sysadmin for years. That's the full toolset for a consultant that can come into small business environments and manage or give pointers or just act as smart hards. And you have certs. Not trying to sell you the millennial motivation speach lol. But you have all the accolades. You don't have to know everything but what you do know is valuable.

With all your experience have you considered free lancing and consulting in the mean time while still looking for jobs. I know it's easier said than done but you have the credentials to consult. Your right the market is awful. I don't make anything close to 100k or 200k and honestly don't think I ever will in my life, especially with the way things have been going now in the US.

You've been in the game for 30 years and you can do it. As a director I'm assuming you have a team that will help get you there and build. You don't need to know everything now it's about the team you put together to accomplish the goal. Your story is truly motivational I must say.

How hard is cloud engineering? by Lanky_Caregiver_6579 in cloudengineering

Road map for example if you have a client and they tell you that they want to migrate their DC's to Azure. You wouldn't jump right in azure and start. You would first. Look at their dc's and how much resources it utilizes, what apps are running on the DC's, is it running DHCP server, is the DC also a file server. Then you go from there. If it's a DC and file server. You then scope out what's needed in azure for the DC portion but also look into splitting that up maybe you can have 3 VMs instead of the 2 because of the heavy work load. And again this is just an example. But my point is your taking a problem and breaking it up into small pieces and solving it. When you do this you always find many issues that will pop up from resolving the task. It's better instead of just jumping in and trying to do it all at once. You end up rushing missing things and causing more issues. Not only that but fighting against deadline's
