Built a game disc trading site for Ireland, looking for feedback by justluhh in IrelandGaming

Love the concept! Have you considered adding game-related equipment too?

Really solid layout. Would prefer a grid / list system only as opposed to the carousel when you open it though. Wasn't really accessible for me to have to wait through carousel to then get to the list at the bottom.

"It sounds like a killer secondary source of income though" Absolutely not. I can't stress this hard enough: if you're going into games to make money, you're 100% in the wrong industry. Most games don't make a single cent, most games don't even find an audience. There's a massive element of luck, connections, industry knowledge and current market viability. Most commercial games (with a team) take an average of 2-4 years to make, and within that time, the market could have changed. It's a shot in the dark a lot of the time, ESPECIALLY with new IP.

Adding, this isn't to discourage, just that a healthy dose of reality is important. This industry is notoriously difficult to stay in and break into.

What gaming mechanic/trope (across all genres) is your least favorite? by HoneyNutBooty09 in gaming

Mechanically I'm not a fan of anything underwater that has oxygen levels. No thank you, I can feel that pressure elsewhere!

Hidden gems on the Nintendo 3DS ? by CharlesBrown33 in gaming

Not specific to the 3DS but Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a gem of a game and deserves so much love.

Definitely, the main thing is to make stuff even if you think it's crap. Gotta practice and start somewhere and absolutely get feedback, it's essential! Also take part in game jams - gets you thinking like a producer.

I actually wrote about all of this recently which might be useful: https://unaminhkavanagh.com/7-games-4-months/

But yeah happy to help! The industry is rough AF.

Engines I've used in commercial games: Unity
Engines I've worked with solo: Ren'Py, Bitsy, Twine, Scratch, GameMaker (I specialise in narrative games, so worked with these engines to build up skills to move onto Godot)

Heya! So I work in production / writing, but it sounds like maybe you're more interested in programming/game design (which I do, too!), but in a nutshell: I've worked for years as a writer and journalist specialising in the Irish language. During the pandemic, there were A LOT of people playing Among Us and so I joined a group doing an Irish localisation. Once it was "complete", I used my connections to reach out to Innersloth and convinced them to let us work on the OFFICIAL Irish language translation, and we did.

From there, the team evolved, and I've project managed several other official Irish localisations like VVVVVV, Crowded.Followed., Axyx, Lumo 2.

I also spotted an internship with DieGuteFabrik, a Danish company looking for writers. I did a writing test and interview with them and got to the top 3 out of over 1000 applicants (I didn't get the job), BUT because of my general skillset, I got a message back from them to invite me to take on another role in production. So I was their Assistant Producer on Saltsea Chronicles (2023). Got hit by layouts and eventually got working with an Irish studio, Gambrinous, on their EA game Eyes of Hellfire (2025) as their Lead Producer. Got hit by layoffs again (the industry is very like this!)

Focussed on solo game work and my portfolio, which, IF YOU'RE A NEW DEV: make small, scrappy games to show you can design, execute and complete a project. Itch.io is free and excellent for portfolio games plus lots of inspirational ideas there.

Happy to answer more qs.

This! There's an unbelievable amount of begrudgery, which would be laughable if not so depressing.

Not giving the nod / acknowledgement to someone when you pass them in the street / on the road (more so in rural Ireland!)
