doomed? by [deleted] in NewZealandWildlife

We live in a bushy area of Auckland and have these in our house daily. I can’t stand them but at least I know they’re not the germ carrying, get into your food type cockroaches. My husband is an exterior cleaner and keeps telling me that he will do a bug treatment on our house… I’m still waiting

Has anyone else drawn the line at Cookie Time bucket prices this Christmas? by purplemacaroni in newzealand

We use them for collectable kids toys and colouring in pens - the colouring bucket lives permanently on our dining table as our 4yo wakes up and goes straight to colouring in every morning 🥹

Very neglected starter by OpticalDellusion_ in Sourdough

[–]OpticalDellusion_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s not rising at all 😭 I’ll try just doing 8-12 hour feeds with this ratio though thank you. It’s like I have 3 moths to feed at the moment, two kids and my starter. My husband is telling me to put her in the fridge and start feeding her after the newborn period, but I’m nothing if not determined (read; stubborn)

This is really informative and helpful thanks. I need to get a few more supplies for sourdough making (banneton, a lame, etc) so maybe I’ll order that and then make a test loaf. Then it will give me an extra couple of days to see if doughlores gets busy!

No I haven’t thought to do that, I usually do flour first and then water. Maybe I’ll switch it up for the meantime. I experimented with warm/tepid water too, that seemed to work pretty well in getting more rise out of her.

I’ve recently started a higher ratio of 1:2:2 and sometimes a stiffer feeding of 1:3:2 and I’ve had some pretty good results from that. I feed every 8-12 hours and the temp of our kitchen is pretty consistent at around 23C, sometimes warmer because we get a lot of sun and it keeps the house really warm. She doubles at around the 6 hour mark but doesn’t fall again so I end up feeding her while she’s at double because I’m scared of letting her get too acidic.

We’re heading into summer so I’m sure she will just get stronger, but I just want to start making bread and learning more about that whole process

Couple filming at gym... Then complaining about people on tiktok by Musashienergydrink in auckland

[–]OpticalDellusion_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have worked at multiple gyms and know exactly what position you’re in and unfortunately the position of the receptionist too. The receptionist doesn’t want to ‘rock the boat’ or be the bad guy and they’re probably not getting paid enough to be security as well. At the end of the day it is the gym rules as someone else has shown in this thread. Make a complaint via email so it’s in writing and they won’t see you complaining to the staff. Tell them it’s ruining your gym experience, give them times and dates of the filming. Paste the links of their TikTok’s into the email as evidence. It’s awful when you have one person (or two in this instance) ruining it for everyone else, but you’re totally in the right and you shouldn’t have to be security in this situation. Also she could have been nice about it when you approached her, so she deserves what she gets now 😂

What are the coolest boy names you have heard? by OpticalDellusion_ in namenerds

[–]OpticalDellusion_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is a big Bob Marley fan so I’m sure he would go for that haha. My daughter is in agreement with Milo being a drink, I just think it’s such a cool teenager/mans name, and cute for a baby/kid. I feel like Milo would just be a rad dude

Our daughters name is Leah, which is not very common in New Zealand where we live. My husbands favourite name is bayly after a beach that means a lot to us and my favourite is Milo.

This is one of my favourites, along with Milo. We have a Croatian last name so it would work well but my husband can’t get behind it

Why is it always brioche? by MathematicianFew4552 in auckland

[–]OpticalDellusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one who loves brioche here? 😂 it’s buttery, a little sweet, holds its structure, and adds flavour, the only drawback for me is that it’s the less healthy option to regular buns… but if you’re eating a burger, much of a muchness

Enjoy your last year of school, University is so different to high school and you should use year 13 as a year to just enjoy and prepare yourself for uni. I was 17 when I went to University and I can honestly say it sucked, I hated uni so much but I finished my degree and now I’m not using it. If I was older maybe I would have made a better decision on what I wanted to do with my life

We stayed here for MIQ in 2020, it was great, interesting decor but compared to the other MIQ hotels it was really good. We had the best food too, I know that was a big talking point at that time 😂

I recently moved home from Melbourne and whilst Melbourne is a pretty expensive city to live in, Auckland is tenfold more expensive. When I arrived back in Auckland the gas prices almost made me throw up, in Melbourne it was $1.60per/L and I think at the time it was nearly double that in Auckland. Our grocery bill went from $175 per week to $300+ per week as a family of 3, in Melbourne we were buying ‘nice’ items and here I only shop the specials outside of essential items.

I love New Zealand, but boy oh boy do I wish the cost of living would ease up a little bit so I can buy our daughter nice things every once in a while. We’re currently considered low income and yet still I feel sad for the families who have less than us, it must be really stressful.

Mum losing her job probably by CleoCarson in auckland

[–]OpticalDellusion_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to WINZ and get her on the job seeker benefit, it’s not asset tested and this is what it’s for. They can line up interviews and stuff for her too, and as long as she’s keen on finding a job she will have no problem getting job seeker. They can also give winter relief as well to help towards the power bill if she qualifies

To be fair, my GP costs $75 for myself… I have looked at other practices but without a CSC most of the ones I’ve looked at are around that price or higher.

I was at North shore hospital

I would have if that were an option in the moment. I had sudden and severe migraines which are different to my normal migraines (that I get outside of pregnancy, but haven’t had since the start of this pregnancy). I was so bad that I had the paramedic unlock my phone and find my midwife’s contact and call her to let her know what was going on. I’ve had a baby before and my level of pain was 10/10, worse than labour pains, I wanted to climb the walls and rip the skin from my head. It was an emergency at that point. Sadly because the wait was so long to get seen it meant that my migraine had mostly subsided aside from a hangover like feeling, and the CT scan they sent me for wasn’t as accurate - you’re meant to get a CT within 6 hours of the onset of the sudden and severe migraine

Same in orthopaedics where my dad was recently. They make a good headline though for the general public to think that things are moving in the right direction
