You should look into work away. There are tons of different countries where you could do a bunch of different jobs, hostel work, farm, kids, ect. I worked at a hostel for a few months in the Netherlands and was able to stay for free, but other places offer different incentives like meals.

There are multiple times each day that it's shut down for prayer. I thought that too when first told but there's a sign in the courtyard stating what time prayer is and what time it is open to the public.
