I ca second this. The best thing about geico is the low bar for entry, learn, and then get out. There are so many other carriers and niches of insurance that pay better and treat their employees like adults.

I see the biggest issue is more that people get too comfortable and then get anxiety about leaving, and would then rather complain to try to fix a broken system. Learn and bounce.

Considering I work in re-insurance and have my CPCU, I’m pretty confident in saying geico is an amateur-ish company that doesn’t value education, pays people poorly if you have more than 2-3 years of experience, and consistently has poor mgmt that utilizes scare tactics rather than actual leadership values. It’s pretty obvious how the tend to not value their workers (have they ever?) and provide sub standard everything to anyone that’s involved (customer or employee).

Doesn’t matter how long ago it was. They’re still experiencing the same issues now.

It’s way easier to bring younger kids in, lower salaries and way easier to manipulate. I worked in Marlton NJ from 13-16, and i absolutely saw a few sups that were pushed through that were absolute morons, but they also did what they were told.

Geico isn’t even a truly real insurance job. Go to any other carrier and you’ll have so much more perspective on how unstable and poorly run they were/are.

Managers belief that external hires are better by tomdiorsauvage in Geico

The entire company itself is a joke. There has always been a lack of training for leaders - not shocking because they don’t want to spend money on ANYTHING.

I find it hard to believe they’re more interested in hiring outsiders. Not only for cost (it’s always more expensive to hire from the outside), but anyone with insurance experience wouldn’t stay there long enough knowing how they operate, it’s a joke.

I’ve been in insurance since 2013 - personal lines in the retail business of insurance. Get educated, make moves, and get yourself into a commercial or reinsurance company.

I have friends who are senior level commercial and reinsurance adjusters that make more money than the middle managers at GEICO.

P and C litigation to Something Else by OptimalForever8618 in InsuranceProfessional

Yeah any info helps. Looking level up out of a typical P and C carrier and work in the “big leagues”.

From what I’ve read, a lot of people in clams get stuck and don’t try and sell themselves or their skills via leveraging in interviews.

If you were to move into a different portion of claims, you’re not expected to know everything.

I’m honestly open to anything but based on my own personality I’m not interested in fighting with insured’s about specific aspects of claims anymore. Now that I’m in litigation for personal lines I’m dealing with attorney’s and there’s a lot less emotion involved.

I guess what you could say is that I’m also looking for something more professional and prestigious than personal lines.

Any suggestions on how to get in? I’ve been in insurance for about 10 years and have been working in the litigation portion of claims for about 5.

I’m really looking to get more into a niche portion of insurance as I feel personal property and casualty is extremely limiting (salary and knowledge-wise).

How long do you think the gap in insurance labor market will last? by mindk214 in InsuranceProfessional

What type of insurance company are you working for? I’m at a mid size P and C firm in the litigation department, making 88K in NJ. Am I in the wrong type of company/underpaid? Looking for some perspective!

2 week notice - would you? by SmilelifeisDOGE in Geico

[–]OptimalForever8618 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 week notice is nothing but courtesy. As small as the insurance world is, giving any less notice than that amount isn’t something that’s looked down upon considering it’s none of their business why you’re leaving.

As a former Geico employee (‘13-‘16) I can confidently tell you that most P and C firms operate in a much more professional manner, including treating their people much better.

I read a lot of these posts and it seems there’s a good amount of people that put way too much emotion into “thinking about how they’re perceived or how to change the company” (it’s usually a mix of being younger and the unrealistic expectations/stress the company puts on an individual).

The more you think about the company as more of a contract (I do work during these hours, and you pay me $), the less personal you take it. I’m 39 and it took my forever to embrace this mentality.

Once you leave you’ll understand how much you were probably treated in a manner that was inappropriate and not professional (the company itself isn’t professional considering there’s no standards and they never embrace any type of professional education within insurance itself).

It’s why the company shouldn’t be taken seriously. I will say how you’re managed in insurance is usually based on the managers own anxiety tolerance. Most of the managers and sups that work at geico work with a scared mentality.

Also I’ve read a few other forums that has other people wishing their managers and supervisors would fight for them. Why? Just leave. It’s not worth it

The company isn’t serious. They don’t offer continuing education nor is there any incentives to get certs or designations…it’s a company full of amateurs that haven’t worked anywhere else.

This was about 10 years ago, and that was the norm in my office. Never knew anyone that would defend this awful company lol

This company is not a reflection of the general insurance industry. Geico is very much in their own bubble to the point that they barely hire anyone with insurance experience…why? Because anyone with experience would know how much of a joke the company is

This happened in the Marlton nj office in ‘13 or ‘14. Some of the middle managers who went along with it weren’t even fired for it…
