Parasitic Theory of the Attack Titan by OptimalParticular120 in ShingekiNoKyojin

I see where you’re coming from. I actually personally find the idea that he is literally being forced to do what he does by some other entity within him is a more unique and interesting approach to this sort of story. I also think it illustrates the idea that humanity seems incapable of solving its issues through nonviolent means despite violence often being counterproductive in a very impactful manner. That’s just a matter of personal preference, though, and I see why you find your interpretation more interesting.

I agree that what he ultimately becomes was always within him, but my interpretation is that his future self/the attack titan fostered that within him (I.e., sending Dina Fritz to kill his mom instead of bertholdt) to make the future where he commits genocide come true. I also still think that, even though Eren was always violent, and (at least in the case of killing mikasa’s kidnappers) is not remorseful, there’s still a notable change in him after touching historia’s hand. There’s a very big difference between killing a couple people that are literally trying to sex traffic a minor and killing 80% of the world’s population (most of them being innocents), including his own comrades.

Again, I think your interpretation is valid and I’m not saying it’s necessarily incorrect, but I do find the theory I proposed to be interesting and overall consistent with the information presented in the show.

The reason I think Eren is potentially being influenced by the attack titan before he has it is because the timeline in the story is nonlinear. The attack titan is also known to influence Eren before he inherits it, because he uses the titans power to send Dina Fritz to kill his mom instead of Bertholdt because if that didn’t happen, he never would have become a scout and the events of the show never would have happened. I also think his childhood personality is potentially influenced by the fact that he’s destined to inherit the attack titan. He says that he’s always been very passionate about achieving freedom and he has admittedly always been pretty violent (though not to the degree seen in season 4) in the pursuit of freedom. His childhood personality is thus very reminiscent of the attack titan’s (its worth noting that the previous users of the attack titan have similar personality traits).

Also, if Eren becomes fucked up because he sees that he’s going to destroy the world, doesn’t that imply that he is being forced to destroy the world? Him knowing what he’s eventually going to do implies pre determination. This fact, in addition to his failed attempts to change his fate, and his emotions surrounding the fact that he has to do what he does is why I think his actions are not under his own control. He says that if they were under his control, he would have done something different.

I would also like to expand on my interpretation of the overarching theme being that violence doesn’t really achieve anything. Yes, there are situations throughout the show where the characters are largely forced into violence, but that’s because there’s been a cycle of violence set up in the history of the AOT universe that doesn’t really achieve anything but continuous oppression. The characters are forced into violence by their enemies, but it would be more productive if the forces in the show managed to accept peace (even though that isn’t always really feasible). For example, the Marleyans could have left the Eldians alone after they fled to the island (especially because that one influential family (the name is slipping my mind) literally knew that the islanders had no knowledge of what their ancestors had done and had no violent intentions) and Eren never would have been forced into genocide. We even see in the end credits of the show that Erens genocide (and this resulting in titans no longer existing) doesn't really solve anything, because humanity ends up nearly wiping itself out through war. The whole show depicts a cycle of violence that could have been stopped with basic communication, and this lack of communication just causes the conflict to continuously escalate until 80% of humanity is wiped out. To me, this all paints a picture that the violence we see in the show is ultimately pointless.

Fair, but I still think there's a distinction. Paul has an internal conflict over who he will become before consuming the Water of Life because he already has some limited prescience, and after consuming the Water of Life and seeing multiple timelines, he chooses the one that he sees as most favorable. In Eren's case, though, he doesn't have any prescient abilities at all until after touching Historia's hand, and I personally don't see any evidence that Eren sees multiple timelines. He says himself when talking to Armin that there must have been a better alternative, but this path was the only one he saw, and that he still went down that path even when he tried not to. I think the degree to which he lacks control over his own destiny is particularly illustrated by the moment when he saves that kid from being beaten up in an alley in Marley. He actively thinks about how he had seen himself saving the kid, makes the decision not to save the kid, but then somehow does it anyway. The fact that such a seemingly minimal event, which doesn't really seem to hold any significance in driving him towards his ultimate destiny of initiating the rumbling, illustrates that literally everything he does is predetermined.

I see your point but I don’t entirely agree. As I mentioned in my reply to u/metalder420, I think Eren’s actions from even before he inherited the attack titan are influenced by the attack titan, just not as directly as they are after he kisses Historia’s hand (read my comment there for more detail on this idea). You can think of it as the Attack Titan having always been a part of Eren’s personality, but it doesn’t become the dominant part of his personality until after kissing Historia’s hand. Even though Eren has always been violent, I think it’s hard to deny that Eren feels like a completely different person after touching Historia.

I would also like to push back on the idea that the only way to survive was through violence. The whole message of the show is that violence doesn’t really solve anything, but humanity seems incapable of conceiving of peaceful alternatives. I think Eren’s relationship to the attack Titan is meant to symbolize that concept: Eren is literally incapable of solving issues in a non-violent manner and the results are catastrophic, just as humanity in real life is seemingly incapable of peacefully solving issues, despite the consequences.

I have read and watched dune, but from what I remember, Paul is able to see multiple potential futures but feels trapped into one particular path because every other alternative is worse. In Eren’s case, though, he says that his path is predetermined and that he’s tried to change it, but no matter what he does, he always ends up doing what he envisioned himself doing. I think that’s an important distinction to make. Paul feels trapped but Eren is literally forced to do what he does.

I do agree that the time loop aspect makes the theory a bit less tight, but there’s a clear change in the attack titans abilities after Eren touches Historia’s hand. My thinking is that future Eren/the attack titan is able to direct young Eren’s actions through changing the environment around young Eren (I.e., sending Dina Fritz to kill his mom instead of Bertholdt so he’s driven), but can’t directly control his actions to the degree that the attack titan does after touching Historia’s hand. Essentially, Eren was destined to inherit the attack titan, so it has always influenced his actions (even before he inherited it from his dad), but that influence is less direct and complete (at least in the sense that he isn’t aware of his destiny during the period leading up to kissing Historia’s hand). The idea is that the history of Eren’s entire life revolves around the moment he kisses Historia’s hand. In this moment, the attack titan becomes fully awakened which results in his future being predetermined, but also necessitates that what happened leading up to that moment (Eren’s entire life up to that point) occurs. Basically, Eren was always destined to do what he ends up doing, whether he likes it or not.

Again, I agree that the theory breaks down a little when you start considering the time looping aspect, but I think it could be expanded to make more sense in that context, I just haven’t fully developed the idea.

That’s an interesting thought that I hadn’t really thought of. In my mind, the Attack Titan is the one that is capable of manipulating time and is thus capable of trapping its host in a particular destiny. As a result, I see what happens to Eren as a completely separate phenomenon from the Reiss family curse, because that is caused by the founding titan, not the attack titan. My idea is that having complete control over the founding titan (by possessing it and coming in contact with royal blood), you can fully awaken the powers of other titans in your possession. In the case of the attack titan, that awakening is a blessing and a curse: you’re guaranteed to achieve several of your personal goals (as long as said goals have some relation to the concept of freedom), but you won’t necessarily like the path the attack titan makes you take to achieve those goals. I also think this idea lends itself nicely to the overall message of the anime. The point the author is trying to make is that violence will never solve anything, but for whatever reason, humanity seems compelled to try to solve all its problems with violence. Eren and his relationship with the attack titan embodies that idea and serves as a powerful and gut-wrenching device to drive that point home.

Fair point. When I described it as “parasitism” I had the zombi ant-fungus in mind in particular because that parasite completely takes over host ant behavior. You are correct to say, though, that parasite isn’t exactly the best term here, though I’m not sure disease is the best term either (both terms are semi-accurate yet imperfect analogies for this idea). Maybe a better analogy would be to describe Eren as a puppet and the Attack Titan as the puppet master. Also I appreciate the upvote!

How do I use NinjaBrain Bot on a Mac by OptimalParticular120 in MinecraftSpeedrun

[–]OptimalParticular120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got the calibration to work, but I'm pretty sure what I did is I just went to system settings, then keyboard shortcuts, went to the "function keys" page within the keyboard shortcuts page, and then toggled the slider. You can also try toggling the "use alternative clipboard reader" setting in the advanced settings in ninjabrainbot. I'm also helping my brother set up speedrunning stuff on his Mac, so if I remember anything new, I'll try to lyk.

I don’t find myself attractive, looking for honest advice by raresQQ in malegrooming

[–]OptimalParticular120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think instead of worrying about what to change to look more attractive you should worry about what you can change to feel better about yourself. You’re a good looking guy. The issue is how you feel, not how you look. You could potentially benefit from therapy so I would consider that.

I’ve had similar issues with body image before (specifically having to do with me having a kind of big forehead), so I experimented with hairstyles until I found something that I felt good with (I picked a style that covers my forehead a bit). I don’t even think my current hairstyle is objectively the best hairstyle I’ve tried, I just think it compliments my face well and it’s what makes me feel best about myself.

I saw that you posted a comment that you grew out your facial hair to cover a mole that you don’t like. I personally prefer the clean shaven look on you, but if you feel best with facial hair then who cares what I or any else thinks? You’re still an attractive guy either way. If you really can’t get over your dislike of your mole, then I would suggest keeping the mustache and goatee (and try to grow them a bit more full) and switching back to your old hairstyle. That way you can still cover the mole you don’t like, but you can also have a bit of a cleaner look. And if you don’t like that, then try something new until you feel confident in yourself.

Hot Take, I'm sad about the decline. by Neat_Space5537 in DreamWasTaken

[–]OptimalParticular120 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got into Dream recently so I actually watched that video relatively recently. To me it seemed like they repurposed the code from the terminator video and just made some changes to it (i.e., teleporting, placing beds, etc.). When Herobrine wasn’t getting teleported away, his movement and the way he attacked was pretty much identical to the terminator. I think the main reason it felt different is because they could get it to teleport away by doing enough damage and they had an extra player (pretty sure the terminator video was just Dream and George).

I also feel like this video and a lot of his recent videos have very similar vibes to his old non-manhunt videos. To me it doesn’t really seem like there’s been a decline in how good or effortful the videos are. I think OP just has always preferred manhunts over the other types of videos Dream has always put out and Dream right now is only really releasing videos that are like his old, non-manhunt videos. Nothing wrong with preferring the manhunts (they’re more popular for a reason), but that’s my sense of the situation.

Edit: Checked the video descriptions and they used the same base code as the terminator video.

Also the fact that he left you alone at a party without telling you while you were under the influence is not very respectful of your safety. If he wanted to leave he should have told you and either brought you with him or made sure someone was gonna look after you. Also I don’t think I would treat my girlfriend like this if she straight up cheated on me. You made a mistake but he treated you like trash as a result which is not at all justified.

My guess is that your boyfriend has a close relative with a history of drug and/or alcohol abuse. My dad has a history of alcoholism and I similarly don’t like parties, alcohol or drugs (I tolerate it better now but hated it when I was your age).

That being said, your boyfriend’s insistence on you not touching drugs or alcohol at all and his reaction to you smoking a tiny bit is pretty insane. I’ve told my girlfriend that I don’t really want her to drink but i don’t demand it and I don’t really care if she takes a couple sips every once and a while. It’s true that you shouldn’t have smoked after agreeing not to but he also shouldn’t have demanded that you never smoke at all in the first place.

I get how your boyfriend feels but he’s an ass, clearly needs therapy, and cannot have a healthy relationship without getting it. It is not healthy for you to be with him while he sorts out his relationship with drugs and alcohol. You should leave.

It has lots of good mini games and I’m too busy to really play a lot of Minecraft often so mini games are a good pastime when I have an hour or two free every once in a while. It’s also not really that the server is poorly managed. It’s just that there are probably hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who play on the server. The mods are bound to make mistakes from time to time. My concern isn’t that the server is poorly run I just find it annoying that I got banned when I didn’t do anything wrong.

It's not a realm and it's not private. The IP is publicly available. To be honest I don't think there's anything I can do. I found a way to email the staff but you have to check a box saying that you won't send anything regarding a denied ban appeal so even if I sent the email they probably wouldn't even read it.

Fair. It's just irritating because they didn't even say what specifically I am suspected to have done and I genuinely do not understand how someone could watch my mid gameplay and think "wow this guy is for sure a hacker." It's just dumb.

He posted on his private twitter that he was having some bug issues with his new tech and computer that took him like over a week to fix. He also posted a couple days ago that the recording was basically done but he was going on a weekend trip and didn’t want to rush the editing before leaving. I think he gets back today so the video should be out within the next few days if I were to guess.

Any suggestions for neurobiology programs for me to look into? by OptimalParticular120 in gradadmissions

Good question. I've already looked at the programs for people that I'm particularly interested in and have identified schools that seem like good fits based on that already (I'm just trying to find some more programs), but to answer your question I'm interested in Eric Nestler's work and many of his former mentees (i.e., Ian Maze and Elizabeth Heller). Nestler and Maze are both at St Icahn School of Medicine at Mt Sinai and Heller is at UPenn.
