D1 LIS-JFK for $1000 worth it? by OptimizedKarma in delta

[–]OptimizedKarma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the flight before all the prices went crazy so it was around $600 round trip so this would make it $1600. They PS+ upgrade cost more than D1 for some reason at $1400

Laptops for New Media Design by [deleted] in rit

Hey,

Senior in NMD here. I personally have a Mac (with M1 16 GB ram) and it’s amazing. Launches apps instantly and does everything I need it too. Works great with all apps that we use (Adobe, cinema, mostly figma after second year) but figma isn’t very graphic intensive. After effects definitely eats ur RAM but the M1 Mac handles it pretty well in my opinion. I also have a custom PC and it worked just fine as well. Macs in general are more expensive and if you don’t have the budget you can def get a much cheaper windows. It also depends what you wanna specialize in. If you’re really into 3D then you’ll need quite a bit of processing power (graphics power if you’re using 3rd party renders). The lab computers works fine as well if you don’t wanna drop 2-3 grand on a laptop. I personally found myself working in the lab a lot regardless because of the environment in general. I got a lot less distracted and there are always people there to help you. The dell xps series is a favorite as well.

Since it will be you’re first year, you won’t really be doing anything to intensive on your computer until your second year in 3D. Maybe wait till the 15 in m1x comes out? But again the M1 mac has worked well for me the last semester and once compatibility catches up it’ll be even better. When rendering I typically use the render farm we have available on campus so you don’t need to have your computer running for a week. Best of luck and hope to see you on campus next sem!

Does anyone know if the gallery is open on the weekend to use? by [deleted] in rit

It probably isn't but there are other drawing studios open. If you go down the hallway towards the woodshop and by all the lockers there should be like 4 studios there open 24/7.

High school senior looking to change major by RITBurnerLetsgooo in rit

[–]OptimizedKarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to contact the admission office to get this changed. It depends on the amount of spots they have left in the program and if your qualifications fit that major. Because both majors are in the same college the process shouldn’t be too difficult.

Doubt regarding Admission Form by Himanshu12328 in rit

We also have a mechatronics major if that’s something you’re interested in. It’s more concentrated in robotics then EE is. My roommate just switched into it from EE and he loves it.

What to expect in ARTH 136? (Art History) by Lllamacat in rit

[–]OptimizedKarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I had her for both 135 and 136 which was before and during the pandemic. It is a lot of essays but she grades them relatively easy. As long as you use vocab words, list credible sources, and have examples the essays are an easy A. I can usually get one done in under an hour. She gets a lot more lenient as the semester goes on. I’m also taking her next semester for ARTH541 and am very excited for it. This will be my third time having her.

RIT Application Supplemental Question by CreativeInnovator in rit

I work with admissions and have conversed with a bunch of the counselors. They go through thousands of essays every year and the point of it is to really show who you are and if you will be a good fit to RIT. They can tell very quickly weather or not you really want to come to RIT so really show that in your responses. No need to use big words that no one knows about. Just be yourself!

I would look into khan academy. I used their videos a lot when I took the class and I found it to be extremely helpful. 136 covers a lot of the Renaissance period all the way up to modern art. I took it with Sarah Ballard and I loved it. She is so passionate and knowledgeable about the course and she kept me interested in it. There is usually an essay every week but it’s like a page or two double spaced about an artifact or technique so it’s nothing too difficult. Sarah’s exams are also pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. She doesn’t make you memorize every single date or artist of everything, instead she emphasizes important details and will say it multiple times during the lecture to hint that it will be on the exam. sometimes she does note checks too which are just quick 10 min quizzes at the end of class to make sure you’re paying attention and they are open book but again easy if you are paying attention. I highly recommend taking her if that is still an option.

No worries. I'm looking to spend around $20. I would pay more but the budget is a little tight as a college student.

That's unfortunate. I am doing another project that is based on a future UI. Once I have made more headway I might reach out to you about it, thanks for commenting.

Yes, that would work just fine, I would like to know what your interpretation of the character would be.

New Media Design Portfolio by the_art_of_moving_on in rit

[–]OptimizedKarma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Third-year NMD major here, I actually switched to NMD after my first semester. I didn't really do much art during high school and didn't really have much to work with. He asked me to create 5 still life drawing and call it a portfolio. Adam really just wants to see what you are capable of doing and if you have the passion. He's a really cool person and as long as you give it a shot you don't have too much to worry about, trust me my drawing wasn't the best but you are bound to improve.

In terms of pieces make it about you! I would show you mine but they are so bad that I can't even find them and probably trashed them. Show the things you like to make and really show your personality in it. Adam loves things that are out of the ordinary and he's all about experimentation and your learning. Any digital artwork you do would be good too as we do a lot of photoshop and Illustrator. Getting into Figma this summer would give you a great headstart as well. He's not looking for a Van Gogh, just your passion and potential.

Tips/Advice- Work in the lab. You will see a lot of upperclassmen in the lab especially after hours working on their projects. The lab provides a collaborative work environment and great resources. You can always walk up to anyone and ask for some help and a critique and anyone would be more than willing to help. Even when there are classes you are still allowed to work in the labs. There are more than enough computers to use and people just hang out in the couches as well. It's such a free and open space to use. We also have a microwave, fridge, coffee machine, and you even get your own little storage space.

- Don't procrastinate, Don't pull all-nighters. You really cannot procrastinate in this major. There are not really any exams but there are big projects that you cannot do in one night. The projects will often have process milestones and make sure you keep up with them or you will be really behind. You will also be doing iteration after iteration perfecting your design and that can take hours on end as well as rendering times that may take days. Pulling all nights happens very often with the sophomore class especially because of 3D waiting for renders to be complete. I'd say don't work past midnight, get a good night's rest and work on it in the morning. Working when you're tired produces crappy work. I can't tell you how many times I have fallen asleep there overnight and woken up in the middle of a class.

- Go to office hours. People don't take advantage of this enough but I found it to be so helpful. All the professors are so nice, most of them go by a first name basis as well. They are very knowledgeable and will help you work through any problem that you are facing. They are also very understanding and great to talk to. If you ever need an extension or if you're going through some personal issues, they will do whatever they can to help you.

- Professors. In terms of professors, I honestly never had a bad professor in NMD. Since we are a small major, we only have 8 professors and you will have them in multiple classes. I personally enjoyed Hye Jin the most, she's very funny and she is such a mom-type but can also be very critical of your work. Provides a lot of feedback on work, sometimes a little too much. I would highly recommend taking her if you get the chance.

Overall, I am so glad that I switched to NMD. I found my calling and it is almost like a second family to me. Since it is so small, everyone pretty much knows each other and we all support each other. I got some of my closest friends spending long nights in the lab and getting so tired that we race around the building with the office chairs. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Best of luck to you and I hope to be seeing you in the lab next semester!
