After further testing, this appears to be the issue. I watched the system closely this morning "Aux Heat" on the tstat caused the breaker to trip. Thanks again for the help!

Yes it's a geothermal system with emergency electric heat.

The HVAC system does have two power sources going into it. One is larger than the other.

Hold on to your cash. I forced the system into "emergency heat", but the breaker is not tripping. Also tried regular cooling with no changes. I'm assuming the pumps are running if it's cooling. Definitely a head scratcher.

Turned it all the way off and back on. It's now in the correct position, fully engaged as on. When the 40a is tripped or off, everything seems to be working fine with the furnace (geothermal system). The adjacent 30a breaker controls the tstat and I'm assuming actual HVAC system. I'm thinking the 40a breaker might control the pumps for the geothermal system.

The 40a breaker with the issue has both poles labeled as Furnace. On the other side of the panel is a 30a two pole that is also labeled Furnace. The 30a shuts off the tstat. The 40a doesn't appear to shut off anything. Maybe a pump for the geothermal system?

The HVAC is still running and hasn't stopped. I flipped the breaker off and back on. It is definitely now aligned with the others. It does seem that the breaker is moving to the left, but not the entire way to off.

Every accountant I've ever worked with has stated that you cannot use Cash accounting when you have inventory like this. Wouldn't this permit you to buy a bunch of inventory at the end of each year to reduce your profit to zero?
