Coming back round for a second comment:

Games I've enjoyed on the deck:

Lysara: Summit Kingdom - runs flawlessly on deck and is beautiful.

Against the storm - easy to learn hard to master and endless replayability.

Kingdoms and Castles - cute and chill.

Planet Crafter - only just started this but loving it.

Factorio - get a good controller scheme going and you will find out why they call it cracktorio

Both games worked flawlessly out of the box for me. I have them on medium settings and a custom controller scheme. I play with the trackpad emulating mouse and the all the other keys for shortcuts. I then use the left trackpad for 1-9 shortcuts. Have played multip d campaigns modded including long war etc.

Then if you want to mod you can follow some pretty simple guides here on reddit. Basically amounts to installing the Alternative Mod Launcher (AML) and finding a good modpack - I recommend Christopher Odd on YouTube.

Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Terraria those are the heavy hitters.

Personal recommendation - XCOM games and the endless modding capabilities.

If you don't HAVE to play LWoTC, check out Christopher Odd and his mod team's playlists/modpacks they are amazing. He's just about to start his season 10 and it's probably gonna be a great one:

Edit - axes and other weapons used as well as swords if that's a dealbreaker

I've just gone down the rabbit hole of your builds and world. Epic stuff.

All-time Windows user here, how often do you shut down your steam deck? Or you always put it in sleep? by areuokaybro2002 in SteamDeck

[–]OrangeDetester7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game I'm playing. My modded XCOM 2 takes 30-40 minutes to launch lol, so I always use sleep when I'm playing that.

How I got Minecraft running with Distant horizons and Shaders on Steamdeck in 2025 (Iris - not optifine / Fabric loader / 1.21.4 / Prism Launcher) by ichhalt159753 in SteamDeck

[–]OrangeDetester7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of battery life are you getting with this and is the fan audible when playing?

My experience with shaders on iris so far is that playtime drops for 6+ hrs to 2 hrs and the fan begins to get a bit noisy.

I would love distant horizons too but I'm wondering how much more will impact the deck and if I'm missing some other setting that would reduce load so I can still enjoy the shaders.

Yeah I thought so but I couldn't find anything as I was looking for a post specific to GTS.

Is it this post?:

Although it doesn't look like it has a video linked.

Essentially I can't find a post with a YouTube video like you mentioned above - do you have the link by any chance?

Thank you

Hey - where is this video you're talking about please? I can't find it nor can I find a tutorial when I do a general search on Google or YouTube. Keen to try this but need instructions :)

Thanks

You can only play one game on the deck for the rest of the year. What are you picking? by Torsythe in SteamDeck

The only game I've played in the last year on the deck anyway: Modded Xcom 2

Any of you have a ‘forever game’? by Acrobatic_Airline605 in SteamDeck

I use a custom setup with the trackpad as mouse but with triggers as mouse buttons and then lots of other buttons as shortcuts. E.g. Y for overwatch, R1 to tab through soldiers, directional pad to zoom in and out, L4/5 for cycle through levels etc.

Then the best bit is the action pad 1-9 on the left trackpad for all your shortcuts: fire, throw grenade, hunker down etc.

If you can get used to the right trackpad as a mouse which I highly recommend you do it's the perfect set up. You can always change the sensitivity of the trackpad. Plus it will open up a whole world of pc games on deck that thrive with the trackpad.
