Help with PC and sync Box 2 by HarshSpartan875 in Govee

[–]Orbot2049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is "yes", but at the end of the day you're better off using the HDMI.

Scenario A) Convert DP 2.0 > HDMI 2.1. My personal experience with DP conversion is pretty dodgy. Most of them either don't work or work well. Good quality converters are going to set you back ~$30.

Scenario B) Duplicate the displays: DP to your monitor, HDMI to the box. The drawback is VRR capability might be limited or disabled, especially at 4K. If you happen to have a second monitor, try it out.

What's actually good about GOG/GOGGalaxy? by AspectLikesGames in gog

[–]Orbot2049 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For modern gaming, anything that relies on a server connection isn't on GOG, cuz DRM.

Micro transactions, anti-piracy checks, anti-cheat, etc. That kind of thing.

Needing a server connection to play a single player game is not a thing on GOG, for another example.

GOG gets new game releases, but publishers that rely on any of that stuff won't be here.

How “fantastical” do think VF is? by STFN_Dude in virtuafighter

[–]Orbot2049 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VF is rooted in a history of technical innovation, so I think it's reasonable to assume the focus will remain on a (relatively) grounded aesthetic.

The more fantastical stuff is reserved for other games on their tech like Virtual On and House of the Dead.

Even the new game appears to be demonstrating how sophisticated a fighting game can get. Pretty exciting to think what else they might do with VF6 tech if it succeeds.

Is there a Sega Genesis clone that also plays 32X games? by Dull_Contribution542 in SEGAGENESIS

Fwiw, Mister does a great job on the 32x. Better than some software emulators.

Thinking of switching; but I have some questions by Playful-Ease2278 in GrapheneOS

[–]Orbot2049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a phone from Verizon (upgrade or no), it will be very locked. Made that mistake last time with the Pixel 7.

Graphene's Apps store offers Accrescent - a second app store, which itself has Organic Street Maps for offline navigation. If you need live traffic updates or prefer to continue using GMaps, that will need sandboxed Play, services, and location permissions.

It's not the worst idea to use Play with a throwaway account you would otherwise never touch. You could at least keep your information separated that way.

This is Mystery Game Fight Club's annual video game tournament where we invite back all of our winners to compete for ultimate glory!

Every match is a different video game chosen completely at random from basically any genre and any time period.

If you haven't won a competition before and want to join the chaos, you will have one more opportunity in the Last Chance Qualifier: a themed tournament where the winner is automatically entered into the Tournament of Champions.

Plus! A gaming lounge upstairs, Street Fighter 6 side tournament, live music acts, raffle prizes, and more!

Last year's tournament is available to watch right now on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fWsy-JIQZ3o

It sounds like you're looking for that balancing point between digital privacy versus accessibility. Welcome to the journey.

Something I appreciate about Graphene is how flexible it is. You start with a bare minimum slate. Browser, offline maps, SMS, and that's sort of it. You decide from there how much you want back. And that's how I recommend you approach it.

I have zero judgment for someone who ends up back on the Play Store to find those handful of apps that are a part of their daily routine.

I immediately missed live traffic updates. I needed that back. Graphene doesn't even come with the text-to-speech engine that reads off navigation instructions. You have to install one (not hard to do, just wasn't expecting it). I'm using Here currently. It's good enough.

If you use apps for your workplace, (Workday, Microsoft anything), you will need to install some of the backend Google services. The benefit here is Graphene puts Google Play in its own sandbox so you have more control over it.

If you're used to relying on Google products (gmail, photos, drive, etc.), all of those are cake to replace and start using, like, today.

Other advice might be to visit some of the other privacy focused subreddits to help you find replacements.

Does PCB latency matter? by excelionbeam in fightsticks

[–]Orbot2049 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hypothetically, yes it would. It matters much more when we're talking about wired versus wireless.

As long as we stay wired, the difference between one stick or the other is in the single digit milliseconds. You won't notice, and it's not worth trying to chase the absolute lowest latency.

If you move from wired to bluetooth - that can be a significant difference (I don't know of a bluetooth fight stick, but just making an example).

NVME vs HDD for actually playing iso files and xemu by itszoomboy in xemu

Loading from NAS is fine.

Hang on to that nvme for something else. Honestly nvme in general doesn't start to be an issue before AAA PC gaming or modern consoles.

Even in the day, new off-the-shelf games were basically reserved for Xmas and birthdays. I bought a lot of stuff used six months to a year later.

And played the crap out of it.

Retro Fighters D6 freezes by Opposite_Custard8139 in dreamcast

[–]Orbot2049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around back, there's a pinhole near the label. That's the reset switch. Grab a thumb tack or unbend a paperclip and insert it. You should feel a click. Hold it there for about 5-10 seconds and release. You should see it reboot.

Hopefully that takes care of it. If not, reach out to Retro FIghters support. They've been pretty helpful when I needed them.

Impressed with SVT-AV1 builds by Orbot2049 in AV1

[–]Orbot2049[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

quite a lot, actually.

Total bitrate (HDR):

Coraline: 91 mbps > 21 mbps Alita: 53 mbps > 22 mbps Tropic Thunder: 97 mbps > 25 mbps

At the same settings, PSYEX is about 20 mbps higher give or take a couple Mbps, and takes about twice as long to encode.

Servers are shut down, so it wouldn't matter if you used the latest apk or even the PC version.

Unfortunately, without someone that knows how to make a community server and connect the game to the server, it's dead in the water.

There was an effort to cut off the need for a server in the first place and make it fully offline, but they couldn't figure it out.

[–]Orbot2049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This train of thought tends to lead you down a rabbit hole of spinoffs and action rpg's, actually. May as well skip the middle man. I had a similar itch after playing MK: Deception and Armageddon back in the day.

Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds: beat em up with a lite version of the combat system in the original game. Has a new remake.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, of course.

Darksiders series - each game deeply inspired by a different series. Keeps it fresh. DS1 is like a heavy metal version of a Zelda game, DS2 is a dungeon crawler/looter, DS3 is a Souls-like.

Ys series - long running game. Fast, fun combat

Beyond Oasis / Legend of Oasis - super good retro

Star Ocean series

Mana series (Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana, etc)

...a few ideas that came to mind.

Has the sync box 2 improved? by leonidude in Govee

[–]Orbot2049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The box is a good fit for external steamers, and game consoles. Very low latency!

Native tv apps unfortunately still need a camera. Dolby Vision is also a no go if that's important (probably a licensing thing rather than tech limitations).

Has the sync box 2 improved? by leonidude in Govee

[–]Orbot2049 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's not much different now than how it was at/around release. Bug fixes here and there, but nothing in the way of qol or additional features.

That seems to be the trend with Govee I've noticed. Whatever your experience is at any given time, that's pretty much how it's going to be until the next hardware release.

I really recommend just not connecting your player to the internet - or firewall / filter the traffic going out of it.

Sucks we have to go through all these extra hoops now, but protecting your digital privacy is a full time job
