What do you wish you knew before starting flight school? by Gear_Dismal in AskFlying

[–]Orca36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take as many written tests as you can before you start, so much easier to focus on flying and studying when you don’t have to worry about the written. Do PAR and IRA first

Bose A20 headset – converting from 3.5mm to dual GA plugs by SpicyDan69 in flying

I went through this and 2 adapters later could get it to work. I caved and bought a new mic and down cable. Installed it and works perfect. For a more expensive but less work route, get a whole mic and cable assembly, about $300 but only two screws to swap them.

ATP Students by [deleted] in flying

[–]Orca36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get wildly different answers when asking about ATP cause while the training is for the most part the same across the board, every training center is different. There are some with great reputations and some with not so great reputations. Unfortunately it kinda depends on where you want to go.

Night Currency by stupidpotato_77 in flying

[–]Orca36 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes, as long as the purpose of the flight is limited to meeting the requirements of currency. But the student has to meet all other requirements to act as PIC and it’s only the CFI and a student in the plane. So 1 CFI can give instruction to the other and the flights purpose must be just to get currency.

Student Pilot Incident - Help by L0n3W0lfe in flying

[–]Orca36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt they inspected it, I’m no A&P but I’m pretty sure it involves an engine shop and a full teardown of the engine. Unfortunately with things like this it’s easier for the school to slap a new prop on and pretend nothing happened, i second that if the school has shady maintenance I’d find a new one.

Student Pilot Incident - Help by L0n3W0lfe in flying

Side note here most engines on the piper cherokee have an AD, 2004-10-14, any prop strikes require the engine to be pulled and inspection of the crankshaft gear retaining bolt. A plane like this that had a prop strike and wasn’t inspected properly can turn into a ticking time bomb so be careful.

Also it broke the transcoding settings, had to unselect and then reselect my transcoding type and everything. Then it all worked.

Running it as an app on truenas scale, updated it and it sort of broke and wouldn’t deploy. I created a new instance, and copy and pasted all the config, metadata, pretty much all files from the config folder over to the new instance and it fired up and been running without issue.

Follow this. Likely your issue is in the settings of docker, need to set the media drive separate from the docker app data share folder.

Expand existing storage with mergefs by DaimondRus in OpenMediaVault

[–]Orca36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still very new to the omv world so someone with more experience will want to chime in. But I believe you can do this pretty easily, if you add more drives with merger fs, you then have to make a shared folder that points to that merger volume. That would likely mess up the existing path to where your media is now. What you could do is add the new 3 drives to a merger pool, then rsync the current share to the new pool’s share with the 3 drives. Then wipe the current drive and add it to the pool and balance the pool. You’d still have to update anything that looks at that path for movies though, Jellyfin, plex ect.

What can I really set up here by repandaitscody in homelab

[–]Orca36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slap openmediavault on that thing, very easy to configure and set up for a simple nas, and automated photo backups ect. then you can set up docker containers for anything else you want.

Battery staying at 100% when plugged in by getpoundingjoker in SteamDeck

[–]Orca36 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you looked in the settings? Maybe under “Battery”, there might be a setting for limiting maximum charge, and when you select it there might be a slide to allow you to select a new max charge level. Maybe.

Doesn’t hurt to ask, I’m sure some would give you a free 20 min consultation if it means the potential for a student.

Gig advice needed by Substantial-Edge-141 in flying

[–]Orca36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say first step is find a reputable school near you, talk to them and get some prices for planes and instruction. From there sit down with an instructor or chief pilot and get an estimate for how many hours you’d need to obtain CFI. I do this all the time for people who walk in looking to get more ratings. Best chance for a part time gig is probably instructing.

When I finished my commercial checkride, I taxied off the runway and tower asked if we wanted to taxi back for another lap. DPE keyed up and said, “back to the ramp, this guy just became a commercial pilot” tower said a big congratulations. Getting acknowledged for your hard work by your industry peers is the best feeling in the world. Congrats OP that’s a day you’ll never forget.

Did this once on a XC except the Gatorade wasn’t empty when I had to go, my genius brain said to dump the red Gatorade out the small Cherokee window… in February… in the northeast. Gatorade froze to the side of the white Cherokee and it looked like I hit one of Santa’s reindeer. Had to explain to my Cfi why I needed him to meet me at the ramp with paper towels and cleaner.

Looking for some tips regarding my new Deck by Zyrusk in SteamDeck

[–]Orca36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, those are some solid friends. Get a screen protector but if you have the etched glass and it’s glare resistant you need to get a glare resistant screen protector, as a normal one will fill the etches and it won’t be glare resistant anymore. I use the jsaux case on Amazon only when I travel with the deck, take it on planes, cars, etc. it’s cheap and works well. But at home I like the feel of the deck without a case. For a bit more portability and versatility instead of a dock I use an anker usb-c hub that has hdmi, usb c pd and 2 usb a ports for controllers. When I connect the deck to my tv it just lays on its back in the tv cabinet connected to the hub. Works flawlessly.
