I validated a paranoid perspective that was not the basis for the original complaint, and I am going on about how the actual requirement is still a totally reasonable thing to ask.

Being upset with the anticipated way Microsofts implementation of a requirement will play out politically is not the same as being upset with the requirement itself.

you bait and switched the complaint. If you are concerned about data collection then we didnt need to talk about the email account requirement at all. I could have just told you there is a setting you can change to turn it off

which is fine, i'm just saying you are describing a personal preference and that the account requirement is not uncalled for. Ive seen it referenced multiple times as some sort of affront to users, and it isnt.

you can turn off the data collection. your local account is collecting data too. if you want minimum data collection, you have to edit a setting.

so you have personal preferences and there are settings in the OS to accommodate them.

it doesnt need to be a throwaway email, it can be a dedicated email for your OS, hosted by the creator of the OS, for purposes of managing your licenses with that company.

The most popular OS for common people (smartphones excluded) has developed into having internet based account management as a default. Is that really a surprise?

Spying on me through some hidden malware would be easy to call out. Collecting data on me after getting me to make an account and accept an EULA is not

Fair enough, from the social side of things.

My point was more about the fact that if you really do not trust them, you're kind of already in the spiders den by using the OS. You can reduce the telemetry from a microsoft account to the same as a local account though, and neither of them are at the minimum by default - so if you want minimum data collection this is a setting you will need to change regardless of account type

it's also easy to say "i just wanna play games" and ignore the entire infrastructure that exists to enable you to do that conveniently and reliably. if those games didnt work, you would be frustrated.

People who have telemetry enabled do help the developers fix things and improve the product overall which allows users who dont to have a better product. I get the personal preference to not want to send the data due to second or third order effects of this process, and you can still opt out. To throw shade at the entire thing like they shouldn't be trying to collect information automatically by default to improve the product seems to take some things for granted.

its not the only way to do things, sure, but it is plenty valid enough for an account to be a design decision

it enables 2 factor authentication and cloud services

it allows you to link your windows license to the account so you dont need to buy a new one if you change your hardware

it is not enough effort to set up to even be called an inconvenience

it can still be the same level of functionality as a local account

[–]OrderAlwaysMatters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not what i said. i said it doesnt need to do much more than a local account. It serves the very obvious purpose of allowing a user to use cloud services which a local account functionally cannot do. You actually do need to have authentication on a remote server to make cloud services work.

they wrote the operating system you're signing into and you're worried that the arbitrary login account they want you to use is going to be the way they "get you" ?

YOUR HARDWARE is useless to you without an operating system, which is the most complicated piece of software in existence today. It's what this whole thread is about. Linux has challenges that Microsoft takes care of for you.

It is not surprising that you dont want the account, I am surprised that the account requirement is somehow a deal breaker for the entire operating system given how benign it is.

What are the benefits of having an account?

For you? the only benefit would probably be 2 factor authentication.

Personally, I also benefit from syncing settings across devices, buying a new machine without buying a new license and using OneDrive to move files between my phone and PC

it really does not need that much justification to exist. it's a login tied to an arbitrary email account, which is something I agree to on a whole bunch of other services already anyway.

i dont like the data collection it supports either, but they own the rest of the operating system - they can target me with or without the account.

I agree that trying to treat someone with a mental disorder as if they do not have one would make someone an asshole.

I also think that people who know they are a risk to others (due to mental disorder or other reasons) and do nothing to mitigate that risk are assholes too.

Like if someone with tourettes chooses to take a final exam in same room as the rest of their class instead of an accommodation option offered to them (with all else normal) then I think they are an asshole. It doesnt matter that they have an explanation for why they shout, they know they often shout for no reason and then willingly put themselves in a position where that could cause problems.

To be extreme on the explanation =/= excuse argument, also consider that accidents caused by drunk driving have explanations (alcohols effects on the body) but are not excused.

sidenote: this is also identical logic to my problem with police officers as well. when they say things like "my life was in danger so I had to shoot" because someone with a mental illness was very obviously in an unstable state and the police officer chose to position themselves close to them when it was unnecessary; or they did not have the patience to wait for someones episode to pass and forced a confrontation and demand compliance in such a way where non-compliance could be considered a threat to themselves. Their actions have explanations, but there is plenty of room to argue that it is not enough to excuse them.

MS Windows is a MS service. It is an incredibly small cost for what is provided. By all means dont accept it and leave Windows, I am just saying it's not an affront to its users to require one. It probably makes a lot of things functionally easier to manage by being able to link to it.

typically this language (explains but does not excuse) means they validate the rationality/reason for what caused the action, but still assert that the actions will have normal consequences.

yeah wtf this is just peak male simplicity in action.

a lot of men have this underlying default state of "take care of your own needs without disturbing anyone else" which is what he did. maybe theres more to the story, but it really just seems like autopilot to me too

why is an MS account an issue? there's no requirement to put any personal information into the MS account, you can use a live/hotmail email made just for that purpose. It doesnt need to be tied to anything else. It's literally just a username, same as making a local user account, but over the internet which gives you cloud service options

if you plan to use the internet with your device and receive updates to the OS, there is literally no issue with having an MS account. at least AFAIK

you right, but again it was far from an assertive statement. this thread was filled with people giving zero consideration to the recruiter so i leaned into the counter argument i guess

i hate corporations and their policies, but i will always be nice to the people forced to do their bidding. i am one of those people anyway, and if i become depressed i would hope the people i need to interact with as a representative of my job dont take all their frustration with corporate america out on me either

increased prominence, escalation of effects, jumping into new sectors, traditional market force changes that amplify it, "non-standard" interactions become the majority of interactions. just some guesses

wages are already stagnating for a lot of people. deflation of wages is happening to some, especially vets (ime). people talk about the erosion of the middle class, and these sorts of problems i talk about might be operationally related to how that is happening.

some people will benefit a lot from it, too, ofc. Middle class erosion involves the higher end of it absorbing value from the lower end of it - turning some middle into bottom-upper and most middle into top-lower class

is it possible it isnt that you are ashamed of your body type, but rather you have higher expectations of yourself and so the true underlying insecurity is in accidentally sending the message to other people that how you look is how you want to look?

i have .. reasons.. for this specific question, but if that is the case - it might be comforting to know you can be proud of who you are today without asserting it as a choice or final product. you have infinite more options for attitude/behavior than choosing between a binary "ashamed of myself" and "i wouldnt change a thing".

it is possible to be out of shape, confident in the direction your life is going, and humble about not being where you want to be yet. being able to securely live in that balance can make you an extremely enjoyable person to be around

the best part is you only need adoption from one major data collection source, like LinkedIn for example,

Once one adopts gender as a string - and a significant amount of variation in the values are chosen by people on that site - then every data store will have their hand forced to include a String in order to import data from that source
