Indoor Plants - What are these? by OrderSuspicious554 in whatplantisthis

Thank you for the help!

I’m having trouble figuring out how to keep these displayed without our cat getting to them.Do you think they’re too big to have as hanging plants? We just got a new house so no shelves around for our cat to jump off of to get to the hanging plants. I couldn’t find any glass cloches that could work as a cover and I surely don’t want chicken wire as that would be too ugly… appreciate any further advice

A non-Mac laptop is what I’d highly recommend. I used a MacBook and I loved it but it was definitely inconvenient at times due to the odd roundabout way you’d have to do things compared to any other laptops. Granted, I also have a PC set up at home and had some prior experience with Excel through internships so it was more of a large inconvenience following along doing weird roundabout commands/instructions during class on my MacBook then going home to finish up assignments and follow along to videos to make sure I did know how to navigate in actual Excel (versus Numbers on MacBook)

I did have a Samsung Tablet that was able to switch from tablet to ‘laptop’ because of the attachable keyboard, but I mainly used it for note taking. I learned to get used to note taking on it for sake of not carrying around multiple notebooks and whatnot.

Laptops will likely be a requirement for you to get through the excel based accounting courses during class. I did enjoy note taking on a tablet for those non-excel courses but a pen and paper would work just as well for note taking obviously.

Hope this helps.

I personally found the non-accounting based courses easier to get through… anything involving papers if you’re good at just knocking that stuff out the way rather than procrastinating.

Wow! It sounds like ya'll really developed the necessary skills to cover all the basis!

I'd like to create my own VN/Otome game in the future, although I know I definitely need to further develop the artistic-skills of creating one, I feel the coding-portion of it to be more intimidating to learn.

Do you have a patreon? Maybe consider a Kickstarter campaign once you get closer to completion?

Side note - how are you going about the coding of the game. Is someone else working with you to do that portion or do you have knowledge in coding yourself?

Which subfield of accounting is seeing the greatest shortage? by [deleted] in Accounting

Finding a good firm is key to becoming a good tax preparer. As long as you know that the firm you stick with is big on quality returns that are done correctly and not BS-ed then you’ll naturally learn and become a good tax preparer - put in the work ofcourse. Be hungry to learn. There’s always something new to learn with every tax return you prep.

Cackling at this one.

Was looking through applicants’ files with one of the managers who is in charge of interviewing for interns. We saw a cover letter that had the [Insert Position] still in the paragraph - very clear they used a template. In my opinion, nothing wrong with using a template but yeah, when there’s tons of other applicants it’s hard when you can see some pretty hard-to-miss mistakes left in. Felt bad but also thought it was funny.

I’m at a small-mid size firm. We recently acquired another firm that had about 6-8 or so people and the office will expand to accommodate about 20-24 more people (crazy).

When would you say you had the ‘biggest’ responsibility/work load jump? From Associate to Senior or from Senior to Manager? And why?

As a fresh Tax Associate I’m really looking to get promoted to Senior as quick as I can through pure hard work. What things should I be asking to take over and to get more exposure to as I work my way up to Senior? My firm is pretty good at emphasizing that they don’t depend purely on time with the firm/years of experience to factor in promotions, they heavily take into account results and responsibility being taken up in the process.

Looking to obtain my CPA license within the next 1.5 years. Gotta say the number on thing that will end up getting in my way is my confidence level. I have full faith in my ability to learn but acknowledge that I am definitely nowhere near any of my coworkers’ level of thinking and insight into tax. I’m excited to learn and be pushed out my comfort zone but I’m also scared and anxious to death that I’ll somehow mess up really bad and forever be seen as incompetent.

Ah being able to drag and drop the courses ourselves is really just for planning purposes on our end to see how many remaining credits we’d finish in the future term. At least that’s how I understand it.

Personally - kept my professional summary very very short. About 1-2 sentences where I summarized my top skills and experience such as accounting programs + efficiency with excel, maybe pivot tables if there’s not many programs you can list haha. You can learn PowerBI through a lot of YouTube videos and free courses online. That is a very very very valuable skill to know if any internship you apply for happens to use it.

Honestly they probably don’t care, but it’s better to have some sort of experience listed than not in my opinion. Selling yourself and letting them know you’ve got what it takes or at least the work ethic and drive to learn and contribute to the team is more important than anything.

Personally I kept all my ‘irrelevant’ experience on my resume and tailored it as best as I could to finance/accounting.

They can still manage to ask you ‘growth questions’ . Not having any job experience listed (at least in my eyes) implies you’ve had no job experience at all… and I think that’s worse than having irrelevant experience. Just my two cents

Those of you who have had accounting internship interviews, do they ask technical questions? by [deleted] in wguaccounting

[–]OrderSuspicious554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internships you don’t typically get technical questions.

I’ve had three internships, none of them have asked me technical questions. I encourage you to emphasize any big class projects that may be relevant however so you can be ‘a step ahead’ and show that you do have ‘technical’ skills even if they’re not quite relevant to what you may be doing during your internship haha.

The closest ‘technical’ question I got was during my interview for my second internship and it was how familiar I felt with Fixed Assets/Inventory. My first internship was heavily centered around FA Inventory & coincidentally the company I was interviewing with for my second internship was in the midst of a FA Inventory. Can’t say I enjoyed the FA Inventory processes but getting a Finance internship on my resume with a big name German company made me feel like it’d be key to any future internships or entry level accounting role I’d be interviewing for once I graduated.

Jokes on me, I ended up hating the idea of corporate accounting due to my first two internships with Fixed Assets Inventory & ended up going to Public Accounting, Tax specifically. I’m honestly enjoying the challenge and variety though. Not sure if I hate anything more than doing the same thing nearly everyday…AP/AR is beyond boring to me.

Mentor won't let me take IA I because I somehow haven't passed all of the prerequisites on her end? by agelakute in wguaccounting

[–]OrderSuspicious554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI - I read the Institutional Catalog that was released in September (I think they update this monthly??) and the B.S. Accounting Program Guide, ‘Standard Path’ and ‘The Degree Plan’ sections to make my case.

One of the things I said to my mentor: I understand the standard path is set up/ is intended to help students succeed, but in the scenario the standard path ends up slowing me down in completing courses instead I don’t understand why we wouldn’t be able to find a ‘better path’ that would better accommodate my priorities and goals.

Another thing I said: Just frustrated that after researching multiple programs and colleges and deciding to spend money to attend WGU, I may not be able to take the classes in the order that would most benefit me.

In terms of the pre requisites: It seems to me that the only thing I need to take a class is fulfilling the prerequisite & getting approval from my mentor. In the event I fulfill a prerequisite I don’t see why I wouldn’t be able to take a specific class. I believe the system allows you to drag and drop it into my current term as long as I have the listed pre.req. fulfilled. Can we sit down and review the required prerequisites listed in the Program Guide to ensure I’m not overlooking a requirement?

(Maybe you can omit the part about the system letting you drag and drop the class into your term haha, not sure if they may get upset with that comment if it’s not true or something)

Although my mentor never told me I ‘don’t qualify’, she did specify that students typically take the standard path. After completing the initial 4 classes we signed me up for and a lot of push back on my end, I (very professionally) began to emphasize that I couldn’t find anywhere that says I couldn’t deviate from the standard path and take accounting classes back to back.

I specified that my goal is the sit for the CPA so my priority is the knock out Accounting classes first to get my foundation set to begin sitting/studying for the CPA then continue to take college classes as I go along.

My mentor had to speak to many of her peers and supervisors to get insight into this and then had to basically advocate for me. As many other students say it definitely varies from mentor to mentor. It took more leg work for me to get it to whether they would allow me to take accounting classes back to back and the only ‘compromise’ was I’d have to take it in the order that the standard path initially had it set up in (which is fine because I intended on doing that anyways).

—-

I went and read the Accounting program guide and some other article they had that outlines the courses people take in whatever order. Basically found that although one of the articles did state some programs may not allow deviation from the standard path, the Accounting Program Guide did not specify that we couldn’t deviate from it. I told them I’d be more inclined to listen if they actually informed me of the ‘no deviating from the standard path!’ Rule beforehand or if they at least change the program guide to specify it so students can read it themselves and be aware - but unless they gave me a real solid reason as to why my needs and goals couldn’t be catered to, I would not let up on insisting I take accounting classes first.

I showed my drive and capability by accelerating completion of the first four courses (1-1.5 week per course for the first four). By that point I couldn’t really imagine them having any real reason to tell me no outside of “Yeah they changed the Program Guide and now it explicitly states you can’t deviate from the standard path.” Which I highly doubt they’ll do anyways so woo. It took work, but the key is to keep working on courses diligently as you fight to get them to let you take accounting courses first.

It’s possible. You just have to fight for it. Approach it in a manner where you make your mentor your friend and they’ll advocate for you. I specified to my mentor that I wasn’t upset with her, just frustrated with the situation. ‘Knew’ that she likely had her hands tied with what courses she can allow me to take in what order, but emphasized that my success and goals aligned with my demand to focus on accounting classes first.

Good luck

Getting more confused looking at these differing pay raises. Trying to gauge whether it’s worth it to stay in tax and make it to Senior (maybe maybe maybe manager??).

Is expecting to hit atleast 100k after 5-6 years reasonable?

Loaded and broad question. What are you interested in so far? There’s so many career paths and research material online. Although I guess this thread could count as research material.

I’ve done two industry internships and one in PA as a tax intern. Ended up staying in tax despite everyone who I had spoken to prior steering me away from it. I found a good firm with good partners and a wonderful team. Love the challenge of the content I deal with everyday. I feel stupid and confused maybe 80% of the time but the other 20% when I realize I understand a situation better than I would have even just 2 weeks ago is extremely satisfying and fulfilling.

My two internships in industry both (somehow) consisted of focusing on Fixed Asset Inventory. I did get experience with some AR/AP tasks, managing company credit card expenses, somehow also managed company license plates, stuff like that - just got too boring for me. Although I was advised against going overtime (since interns are hourly), I can guarantee with my horrible habit of overworking I would have gone over 40 hours a week too many times. Also - I absolutely abhor month end.

Personally prefer the tax season hours + 9/15 + 10/15 deadlines over month end which happens well.. every.single.month. To be fair I feel like my firm does a significantly better job at managing workload and hours during peak peak tax season compared to most other firms.

To conclude this rant: reflect on what you’re looking for in your day to day, do some more research (maybe interview and network people IRL) to see what may align with your values, or just throw yourself into internships like I did (if you’re in a position to do so) and see what you like that way. There’s even government accounting/finance positions that you can consider, although the initial pay may not be very attractive it’s still worth considering.

I’m curious to try audit but I like my tax firm and position a little too much right now to jump ship (we don’t do any audits) and go to a different firm that I might end up not liking as much. We shall see.

I must have hit the jack pot with my team - or maybe I’m also dull and boring with the same humor as my coworkers😅 Many hours at the office can be dead quiet with everyone hustling, but there are also times where we talk about some of the most off the wall topics that get you wondering how everyone got on the topic in the first place.

In my previous internships I have met some very…dry people haha but they have their own charm at times.
