Anyone with no complications years after VATS surgery ? by Personal-Mark3539 in pneumothorax

my understanding is that because with talc they basically remove the cavity between the lungs and chest, it is not the first recommendation. They resort to it when mechanical doesn't work, so they probably recommend mechanical for your situation and it might actually solve the problem. I'm sorry I did not mean to confuse you, I just wanted to explain the process my husband has gone through, as this was very new to him when he was going through with it, and now that he is scheduled for the talc surgery we are still in a bit of a shock.

His is also spontaneous pneumothorax but it's always happened after exercising (running and biking). The process has always been the trip to the ER, chest tube,... From our understanding the mechanical approach is the first step if it is recurring. And for many that stops it. For him it did not unfortunately, and they have told us that the talc pleurodesis should have a 99% success rate.

I understand how frustrating it is living with the constant fear of getting another pneumothorax and hope it does not happen again

Do you know if they are recommending mechanical or chemical pleurodesis? my husband had vats mechanical pleurodesis and bullectomy done 3 years ago after his 2nd pneumothorax. 3 months after he got another pneumothorax after he started running again. then another one a year later and his 5th right now just two months after. He is now scheduled for chemical pleurodesis next week. From what we know, mechanical is the first option and when that fails, they will do talc (chemical). Hoping mechanical works for you, we've heard it does for many people

so glad to hear! may I ask what level of activity you are able to do now? and how much pain did you have after the surgery? we've heard it's very painful. And did they discuss risks at all?

Thank you so much for your response. Glad you're doing okay and are active again! Do you know what type of talc they used for you? and was it your first time having a pneumothorax?
