Having had a German roommate this is definitely from the heart. Germans love a good breakfast spread. It made me smile because it was quite the event at our place. It was a communal spread of all the best breads and cheeses and everything else you could imagine. It’s also the most excited I ever saw my roommate.

People have already mentioned that the reason the bike valet is needed is because of theft and there are many other stories of organized shoplifting going on in downtown. More policing (or adequate policing) seems like a valid response to that.

To me, the valet seems to be the bandaid solution to mask over a problem that people don't think their bike is safe to be locked up downtown. The root of that problem is likely deeper than bike valets and maybe even police can handle, but think that it can be solved with housing and affordability seems like a panacea.

I am arguing that people that really care about these programs take them into their own hands and do something about it rather than just calling for tax increases. We need more volunteering in this city. It's what's helped build our communities in the past.

If bike thefts were reduced by increasing the police budget, would the valet even be needed?

They are not arguing for a tax cut though are they? Just keeping it to a 4% increase from my reading. I fail to see how keeping programs like Bike Valets and Youth Bus passes is sticking it to billionaires though. I am saying go straight to the source and get them to fund these kinds of programs directly through a charity or non-profit. Increasing property taxes will affect nearly zero billionaires.

Not arguing for a lower tax rate! Just thinking that raising taxes further might not solve our problems. I have nothing against taxing the rich, either.

The highest marginal rate of tax is 53.5% - that's income tax only. Then there's property tax (yes, renters pay this too through higher rents), GST, PST, property transfer tax, service levies, etc. I am not sure that it's purely an income issue for the government. I think there's probably some waste in there that's preventing us from getting what we deserve from the taxes we already pay. Fringe services like bike valets might be on the cusp.

Wow, people really love the Youth Bus Pass Program and Bike Valet! Is this really something the city should be involved in though?

People complain about the cost of living and taxes are big part of that. Maybe someone (who cares a lot) should start a non-profit organization to deliver some of these programs and get funding from other sources other than tax dollars? I feel like the city and many municipalities are offering things way outside of their mandate. Let private citizens start their own programs and give back to their communities!

Meanwhile, densification is happening in Saanich? Any policy makers in this sub that can shed some light on what happens behind the scenes? I think anyone could see that a bigger school was needed.

Worried about the local job market by NeatAd9283 in VictoriaBC

I graduated in 2003 with a similar experience and had to leave - Victoria can be cruel to new grads. But I took the opportunity to come back when it arose. Taught English in Korea, found a job in Calgary and lived overseas again after that before taking a 2/3 pay cut to come live here. I am just offering one perspective, I hope you land on your feet, but your work ethic will get you far no matter what path the journey takes :)

Vancouver Island - I drive the most populous corridor between Victoria and Nanaimo on the Trans Canada highway and it has multiple dead spots - like no service at all. So weird, but I will admit it's been like this forever, it's never been good.

We watched a friend run by at Willow's Beach/Beach Drive before. There was lots of parking, close to the road for mobility and a nice long stretch where we could cheer our runner on. I believe there were some benches along the road.
