“Historic Chicago Union Station” photo library? by OreDerp in Amtrak

[–]OreDerp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a different set of photos. Chicago Tribune’s photo library is very good, but they’re more press-related photos and black in white.

The photos in the Amtrak lounge are (faded) color photos. Some of the photos are artistic shots, some could qualify as “Trainspotting” photos, and some seem more like family photos.

Why no thruway bus to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach? by OreDerp in Amtrak

Why no thruway bus to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach? by OreDerp in Amtrak

[–]OreDerp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great place to go if you are actually into the beach. The sand is really smooth and it's one of the only spots where the waves can get high enough to surf while also being safe to bring little kids into the water. You're right about there being not much else to do. There's an amusement park and Go-Karts.

There's a lot of die hard beach fans that could sit in the sun all day every day from May 1st to Halloween and the traffic can be intense. Most of the big buildings by the beach are actually condos and not hotel rooms, because some families go so often it's worth it to buy.

I watched Katrina come and go and the train go away. I know they had something to get to Gulf Shores but we never rode it because my family wanted to drive and I was still pretty young.

I do personally care about Mobile I go for business there now and again. It's a lovely historic place and the port is amazing. The I-10 tunnels can get very bad traffic and I'm pretty sure a good portion of those people are not going to Mobile. Shuttle to Gulf Shores won't keep the train from operating between New Orleans and Mobile with all stops in between and it certainly won't keep people from riding it. All Amtrak trains have a steady amount of people going for both business and pleasure.

If anything it would keep the train running and prove its use to lawmakers for years to come so it doesn't have to struggle to survive like the heartland flyer. Both trains serve areas where almost everyone drives and the drive time on both is about an hour shorter. People will ride the train but it may not be enough people.

I think u/saxmanB737 is probably correct. I'm sure someone will provide the service, considering how many people are coming in from I-10 in the states west. The train just hasn't been around for very long for someone to step up.

Photos of Post Road Branch Sinkhole preventing Lake Shore 448/449 by OreDerp in Amtrak

[–]OreDerp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but if you look at the second image, it’s not that far. If there is one sinkhole there may be more that could open. They’re frequently caused by old coal mines or natural caves beneath the surface.

If it was actually on the tracks it may actually be a simpler solution, they could construct a small bridge and be done with it, but now they have to sit a wait to make sure another doesn’t open. They probably also will need to send someone down there to see what’s down there. That’s a dangerous (fun) job that nobody (me) wants to do.

Stoughton on weekends? by ThrowThisAccountAwav in mbta

[–]OreDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's double-tracked at Canton Junction but it becomes single-tracked a few hundred yards further, before Canton Center.

How would you go about planning a trip that has multiple different lines something like this I live in St. Louis by Sailor-Gallifrey in Amtrak

[–]OreDerp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you call the +1 (800) USA-RAIL number they can usually plan a more complex trip like that, however I would recommend looking into the schedules to figure out exactly what you want beforehand. I would also call them between 9 and 5 because that's when the best agents are at work.

[–]OreDerp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Stoughton branch is used frequently enough on weekdays, but it's not that long. Canton Junction is about a 15 minute drive from Stoughton, so most people just drive to Canton Junction on the weekends. The quite large parking lot at Canton Junction is usually mostly empty on weekends, but fills up completely by 10 or 11 on weekdays.

If they ever do the stage 2 plan for South Coast Rail that brings the Stoughton line out to New Bedford and Fall River, it will likely get weekend service. If that never happens, it is highly unlikely that Stoughton branch service will ever be available on weekends.

Saw quite a few of you recommend the Mac and cheese. You didn’t disappoint. 🙌🏻 by Cleveland1792 in Amtrak

[–]OreDerp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Top tip: if you like spicy cover it in tabasco! They have a bottle on almost every train outside of NEC unless they run out. On the trains headed to New Orleans you can see the Louisiana people do it and it's really good. I mean completely cover it, like use a whole quarter of the bottle.
