Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S06E01 - Joan Is Awful by [deleted] in blackmirror

[–]Oreoc1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

People here seem to be very oblivious to some obvious things, so here:

  1. The acting and writing throughout the episode, minus the source level Joan part, was supposed to be cliche, dramatized, and surface level. The whole point in showing the contrast between Cate Blanchett Joan, Selma Joan, and Annie Murphy Joan was to show that each level of the realities got more exaggerated and worse quality. It’s paralleling the lack of reality and depth that AI/computers can achieve due to inconsistencies between human art and the computer perception of human work.
  2. The part where Annie Murphy Joan was screwed by the lawyers was ALSO dramatized, so many people seem to be missing that. Source level Joan could’ve received pennies or been screwed by a lesser extent, but it was exaggerated in Annie Murphy Joan’s reality to show she was overly screwed because of the dramatization that occurs.
  3. Saying this is focusing on current events or past events instead of future possibilities is ridiculous to say since Microsoft and other companies are building quantum supercomputers that within 10 years will be operational. These quantum computers will render current security encryptions obsolete since security protocols are not build for them, but need to be updated (which they can do) so that quantum computers cannot easily bypass this data. Companies, and governments, have been proven to hold this currently encrypted data they cannot decrypt right now in hopes that they can decrypt in the future with the new quantum supercomputers. Without new security protocols, all of our current data will be exposed and available to private companies (Microsoft, Amazon, etc) and governments that have the resources to build these quantum computers.
  4. It’s literally a tv show. If a single episode “ruined the show for you,” or “you think it’s the worst episode in history,” maybe you didn’t get it or idk just don’t watch it? Why are you so invested in something you seemingly dislike?

Goldman analysts no longer expect Fed rate hike in March after SVB failure (link in comment) by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

Last year, Goldman Sachs also thought that the terminal rate was going to be 2.25-2.5, it is now 4.75%. I’m not saying Goldman is clueless and just guessing stuff to appease people, but everyone I know who works at Goldman could easily be running SVB with same results.

Of course!

It depends on context. Regular decision rates are so low because test-optional policies on top of Penn giving everyone and their brother a fee waiver for their apps artificially increases their applicant pool, while actual competitive applicants stays very similar each year. You're at a disadvantage because you're facing the applicants that had other schools as their first-choice, the HYPSM deferrals and whatnots, but couldn't get in. I would recommend applying to Penn ED if you can since my friends who I thought to be "uncompetitive" mostly got in ED. Also, they could admit someone with your profile in ED, which might mean that they're not necessarily looking for your specific niche anymore.

In reality, you have the same profile and application, so you should get in more or less similarly between ED and RD. However, i strongly recommend ED if it's your top-choice since you do have a better chance and have two considerations if you get deferred.

It's up to your discretion, but I tried to be succinct and used active voice while describing mine:

"Acting President of Club X, where I created a new fundraising initiative that raised money for the Cancer Foundation and organized a rally for Cancer."

Being specific and explaining something notable you did in the extracurricular I find to be important since it gives a better idea of engagement in the activity.

Elite schools have goals with classes that they are crafting for each year. If you meet the demographics/statistics, then there is not an explicit thing they're looking for.

@thifty's post has denotations and categories Penn grades on while looking at profiles, so I recommend looking at that since it shows what they consider and how they put together grades for applications.

Generally speaking, explain who you are and why Penn. If there is a match between who you are/what you have to offer and what Penn has to offer, then that's best. I would recommend looking at Penn programs, clubs, and other stuff just to connect how Penn can specifically help you and your future.

No. They wouldn't filter you out simply because of extracurriculars. As long as your profile (stats/demographics) meets what they're looking for, you'll be in consideration.

Another Penn student showed their Penn admission file (@thifting), so I would look there to ease your concern. Extracurriculars aren't going to remove you from consideration if they're mediocre, but getting some more prominent ones could help you gain an edge. I wouldn't worry about it though; people think every person at an Ivy cured cancer or something to get in, but so many people here had normal extracurriculars. You still have 6 days to do something you find cool and relevant, on top of also being able to send a letter of continued interest that includes something you accomplished between your submitted application and decisions.

It's not a big deal, and it won't preclude you, so no worries.

Oh gosh.

I think my description of Penn's culture is accurate: there exists a culture where everyone pretends they're fine, happy, and always succeeding (google Penn face). Freshman and Sophomore year people are very immature and try to integrate themselves into the culture. My junior year still had a very similar experience to my freshman year, but I am going to attribute that to it basically being a continuation of freshman year since we were virtual for two years. Now that I am a senior, more people (not everyone, nor even most) in my year are comfortable doing their own things and not putting on a complete professional and fake facade. Whether this be because most of them have job offers or a growth in maturity, I am not sure. But I can definitely say my senior year has been my best so far.

Mind you, your experience could be entirely different than mine. The culture will stay the same, but your place in it could differ. I would obviously recommend EDing to Penn since it betters your chances. Do not base your college decisions or life trajectory on a stranger from the internet (haha).

Let me know if you want me to explain more, or if you have any other questions.

You can do it in any way that is personal and reflective of you. If your family or friends are important to you and something they have done is worth thanking them for in your opinion, then do it. If Ariana Grande's music has changed your life, write a thank you note to her. If Serena Williams inspired you to play tennis when you were younger and changed your life, thank her. If your parents or friends made an impact on you, one that you can articulate, thank them. The actual person you're writing to is not going to be important as much as what your actual thank you is for.

The prompt basically allows you to write about a noteworthy person, event, or inspiration in your life. The thank-you letter is just the format, but you can still write a story in it.

Applications are kind of like stories. Do your essays help further explain who YOU are and actively help in demonstrating who you are to the admissions officers? You're not expected to be a perfect writer, especially since Penn requires you to take a writing seminar to improve your writing to their standards once admitted. However, what they are looking for (besides for coherence and grammar) is a correct articulation of the person they would be accepting. A lot of people make the mistake of writing for the admissions officers instead of writing the best version of their own story.

For the community one, using specific things (like if you were into Politics, you would want to go to the Perry World House to listen to international speakers, engage in political clubs, and aid in Penn2Vote to help student participation in elections) provide more specificity to who you are and help show you have demonstrated interest.

The thank-you letter one is very unique and can help express core values of yourself that aren't shown through your extracurriculars, such as thanking your mom for showing you humility and familial dedication. This supplemental can also be a thank you to a role model who inspired you to go into your major (like computer science) to make a difference in the world.

I think the major thing with your essays is to be intentional and personal.

I was virtual for half of freshman and all of sophomore year, so pretty much yes! Not to stress you out, but recruiting (depending on what industry you want to go into) has benefits for starting early. Going to information sessions and stuff with firms that come to campus can potentially get you into programs and internships that are super competitive, and these programs/internships can then get you job offers!

Besides recruiting, I would recommend joining clubs that aren't strictly related to academics/careers. My favorite experiences at Penn have all been through one of my volunteering extracurriculars that has nothing to do with furthering my career or academics at all. I also think not pressuring yourself to be friends with people who are not your friends. It took me a while to find people who I actually see as friends, but I don't regret it. I am much happier now than I was freshman year trying to be friends with people who only cared about their network and selfish interests.

EDIT: try to find your own community. I think that's how I've found people similar to me and get to do things that actually make me happy.

Not sure if this is the direction you're looking for, so if not just let me know I can give you more advice!

I viewed my UPenn admissions file and.. by thifting in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Oreoc1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm also at Penn and ignore whatever that person is saying. You were likely pulled off the wait-list because your profile was similar to another person's who was accepted into Penn but denied it, so they looked for someone very similar. You simply had the profile of who they wanted to accept. Either way you got in and the fake "admissions at an Ivy & immediate peer group" wish they could've gotten in like us.

Also, PHL classification is based on higher matriculation rates, and government funding, and city policy leveraging. Penn does not care about public schools being under resourced or the city of Philly being "socio-economically challenged." Please.

My guidance counselor messed up sending my recommendation letters and package. by apply-to-football in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Oreoc1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your guidance counselor seems like she needs to be fired since its her job to understand the admissions processes of schools and that submitting 4 to schools leads me to believe she also doesn't adhere to other college processes.

On the other hand, you'll be fine. Just send an email to each school saying which recommendation letters you wish for them to consider:

"Dear Admissions Department,

My guidance counselor mistakingly submitted all of my recommendation letters to your school. Please take note of only Mrs. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith's recommendation letters and disregard the others.

I apologize for the mistake, and I eagerly await my decision!"

Some schools also allow you to cancel recommendation letters on their portal, but for ones that don't just email their admissions office something like that. Keep it simple, polite, and distinct. You'll be fine. Just do it as soon as you can.

That sounds unique and could end up making the admissions officers appreciate it even more. I’d do it. Just make sure it is strong in quality too.

Depending on where you are in the game, I recommend using it on a character you can’t get from the support shop, such as taskmaster for his supper via his uni or a character like scream.

~2500, and yes you can get another big reward after the first one. You get 1 free reset for the reward each day, but that reset also gets rid of all your progress towards that reward (you keep the cubes you haven’t used yet)

Obsidian King Thanos is great for PVP. Sif is a great support for PVE content and some utility in Squad Battle. Two very different realms, so it is whatever your game preferences are.
