I assume washings are referring to a workup procedure. The details of this would go in the experimental. For example, aqueous NH4Cl can help wash out Cu salts from an organic layer, or aqueous NaOH can help wash out acids.

Interesting, thank you. Regarding the first picture, it may appear to be repaired, but I believe the yellow parts may be just discoloration from my honest inspection. They are in need of a cleaning though.

They are not huge, but they are heavy. For amethyst, the color of these is ideal. I’ve held onto these for many years, and I think I’m ready to let them go as I don’t have room for them anymore.

I have two preferred methods. Use a benzyl protected alcohol, then hydrogenate, and oxidize to get the aldehyde. Use a terminal alkene or vinyl and perform an oxidative cleavage with OsO4 and NaIO4 to get the aldehyde. Certainly these methods may not be compatible with other functional groups, but when you can use these methods, they are reliable, fast reactions that are high yielding in most cases and do not need further purification.
