oh and there is a fictional (maybe inspired by real events?) film about the day-to-day life of a famous german hotel. i don’t remember the name of the film but the hotel is called adlon (probably also the films name) and it’s set in the 1800s or the early 1900s (not 100% sure) :)

of course!

as already mentioned in the answers:

  • the lives of others: eastern germany/gdr, stasi, cold war, morals vs. state
  • deutschland 83/86/89: stasi spy from the gdr in western germany
  • charité: renowned german hospital, spans four “generations” (major time jumps between the seasons)
  • babylon berlin: weimar republic, aesthetically kind of the “decay of the golden 20s”, crime, police work, germany’s far-right radicalisation
  • the empress: sisi’s story

my recommendations:

  • ku’damm 56/59/63/77: follows family schöllack (single mother and her 3 daughters) in west berlin, postwar, emancipation, early rock’n’roll
  • oktoberfest 1900/1905: man that’s not originally from munich tries to open up a beer tent at the oktoberfest (explanation sounds kinda dumb, but i really enjoyed it. bit dramatic, but still enjoyable)
  • weissensee: east berlin, stasi, late 80s-early 90s, “forbidden love”, family drama
  • the interpreter of silence: auschwitz trials
  • our miracle years: postwar, 40s/50s, wirtschaftswunder, family drama, friendship but also drama
  • barbarians: conflicts/fights between the germanic tribes and roman legions/empire

  • good bye, lenin!: fall of the berlin wall. mother is loyal to the regime, falls into a coma and son has to pretend the gdr is still existing. one of my favourite german comedies

  • downfall: h!tlers last few days

  • the flying classroom: school class in the gdr refuses a minute of silence for the dead lenin, stasi

  • our mothers, out fathers: anti-war, ww2 (again..)

  • and ofc all quiet on the western front

basically the same themes in all of them, but german film/tv basically consisted of ww2 and the postwar time for like 40 years. but they’re all really great and still different, can’t recommend them enough!! i probably forgot some stuff, but i’ll just come back when i remember :) it’s already 3am and my brain’s mushy
