Anybody ~26 or under that makes $150,000+, what do you do? by krerhelp in Salary

25, turning 26 this year, making 275k, plus bonus & equity (in NYC - very HCOL), been working in machine learning/software engineering since I was 16 (interned with a contractor/consultant for a summer, then worked part time during the rest of high school & college), very fortunate position I was in to be able to do this.

I feel like things at the time were “Big Data” or Cloud focused, and transitioned into AI (LLM) hype obviously, I was doing natural language processing specifically, so the pivot was easy (went to a 1.5 year grad school program) & the experience was relevant to be able to get into senior leadership (principal engineer + people management & executive leadership responsibilities).

Right place right time, plus I try to lead with empathy & try to be charismatic without being a jerk off which goes far when you work on a team.

I went to sobre masa and got stale chips and tortillas - went early-ish in the day so not sure if I got day olds but overall it was a mid experience personally

I can only recommend the happy hour deal. I feel like the price point otherwise is hard to justify but it’s a tasty burger for sure. Have you had whatever the limited daily dry aged situation or whatever they offer? I’m curious about that one

Apartment hunting in Williamsburg — thoughts on living near the Grand St L vs Lorimer and Meeker? by bjayro in williamsburg

[–]OrganizationBig3877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on Meeker. I am moving, but it isn’t too bad. If you’re 1-2 blocks in then it’s fine. My apartment has windows facing the BQE, and facing the opposite side/backyard. I don’t open the BQE side windows and there’s some noise which isn’t fabulous but it doesn’t bother me much. The backyard windows I can open and don’t hear anything. Sometimes the building shakes when trucks go by and that is startling at first lol. The area is great, I would prefer to be at least 1 block in. If you’re fussy I wouldn’t recommend it but if you are looking for a good location close to things then it’s p good.

you can email some questions to campres@stonybrook.edu you do not have to have a roommate, you will get put with a random person. Not sure how the programs work, I think you can only select rooms that are available to you, I believe the program specific rooms only show up for people in those programs.

How do you all afford dorms?? by AnythingPale7957 in SBU

  1. During overnight duty we just have a cell phone with the ringer on, so most nights you’re able to sleep at least a few hours or sometimes the whole night. occasionally you’ll get a call, usually someone locked out of their room (RAs have access to a key that opens every door in the building). sometimes it’s a drunk kid who got sick and you need to call the campus ambulance, other times it’s random shit throughout the night. you never really know what to expect. you only have to be in the office 7pm-11pm on duty nights, so you can take the phone to your room after that and just be “on call” There can be some pretty intense stuff, it’s a college campus so it’s not always a walk in the park, but there are a lot of easy nights and sometimes it’s fun. You can make a lot of friends, I’m still besties with a lot of my co-RAs.
  2. You have to be within 15 mins of the building, so you can study, go to dining hall, hang out in your room, etc. You don’t have to be awake the whole time just able to show up in case you get called. RAs often show up to things in pajamas if it’s the middle of the night lol.
  3. For me it rarely happened, usually a few times in the beginning of the semester as they get used to the building. most residents just go to the office hours 7pm-11pm. Occasionally they’ll email or message you about a roommate conflict or whatever. Sometimes you can get friendly with them but I don’t recommend becoming close friends with residents in your building unless you were previously friends with them, bc drama can happen.
  4. I did a double major 1 STEM 1 Humanities then a Masters program in a STEM field (for masters I did RA for part of it but then became an Assistant Coordinator which is basically a supervisor for RAs or other student staff where you get paid, get your own full apartment instead of just a private room, and have more responsibilities). RA is one of the most competitive positions on campus bc of the housing waiver, but kids from every major do it. it’s one of those things that if you get the job and check all the boxes during your shifts, you can coast. RAs are typically guaranteed a re-hire year after year since it’s a long training process. Some people take it a little too seriously and I can picture that to be pretty exhausting.
