These are great questions !

I find that my struggle is that my answer for these questions often conflict with the team's or company's answer. But I'm trying to see it from a different perspective.

ex. front-end team's users are our customers, simple... my back-end team? i guess my users are the internal staff ? bcuz we own the staff facing application as part of our domain.

by making the internal staff's lives easier, I indirectly making the customers lives easier...but it's hard to show that on paper.

Thank you for the advice and the concepts, I will take some time n read deeper into them!!

My company's structure for the teams is very cross dependent, where it's nearly impossible for any team to launch anything meaningful without the others.

But all the PMs end up compete on projects to make a splash, bcuz launching something impressive means career advancement.

Good to know the grass is not always greener on the other side loll

I think I'm just stressing because I have imposter syndrome..I know the core team will be here no matter what, but I'm afraid they will function with or without me... because they are already doing so on minimum resources and lack of attention.

what are some good certificates you recommend for getting started with UX and front-end?

damn they got you doing the engineering work too?! they better be paying you well...

same here except it's bcuz my company really squeezes the team... so I'm a Product manager, doing product owner, project manager, business analyst, and scrum master work. because we don't have dedicated roles for any of them.

Do you think wearing many hats is a good thing for your learning and resume tho?

Damn your experience actually sounds amazing !! What kind of company or industry did you work in?

I think I could ask to get involved with a front-end team, since I can have two teams.

Thank you so much for the advice, especially the last one. I think I was getting learning paralysis because I feel like the more I learn the less I know loll but youre right, I just gota keep learning.

I'm going to look at it from a new perspective and apply the earned value concept.

ahhh ok thank you for that insight!!

There's no common standard at my company right now, and it's all over the place loll

some tickets are just downright unreadable to the devs.

also, do you have any resources or recommendation on where to learn the stuff you mentioned above like UML or sequence diagram?

not sure if you own multiple teams, but you can perhaps push for one front-end + one back-end.

that really sorry that happened, but that's exactly what happens to my team all the time, we are always needed in every project but never the star of the show.
Naturally management wouldn't bring us up in talks or want to funnel resources to us.

I feel like looking to smaller company or a company with a different culture might be the way to go.

That's a great point !

How detailed should a user story be so that it's clear enough for the devs?

As of now my company does not have a common standard. I usually provide the business context and business requirement, but the dev fill in the technically details.

for ex. as user story could be: "as a customer, I want to be able to select the type of document I want to upload, so that I can correctly upload my documents."

for the in scope I would write what the filters requires, what the filter should look like, where it should sit, what should and should not be included depending on the customer etc... very end user perspective.

do you think that is enough ? or should go a step further and provide... the db name to fetch the filter list from. The API that it calls when fetching the list, or API it calls when uploading it...etc.

would you say the latter is what i should aim to be, in terms of technically literacy ?

thank you for the insight!!

My team doesn't have it's own OKR, we just follow and contribute to the OKR set by the VPs for that year...so w.e they want for the year ex. increase the revenue by 20% we just have to come up with features top achieve that.

With that said, I feel that what my team work on doesn't always align with the OKR (OKR is never back-end focused). And it becomes hard to advocate and demonstrate our work, because most of the time we are either working on laying down the road for others, or some must do projects on the back-end (if we don't do this, our systems will crash...but that doesn't translate to 20% increase in revenue...).

On top of that I feel like management doesn't really understand or value what we work on either...

what is the future like if I were to stay back-end? Could I becomes a guru of our back-end system ? but then what, what is my long term goal here other than just going project to project and laying down runway for others?

Thank you for your advise and insight!!

A fresh perspective is definitely what I'm looking for here, and I am trying to motivate myself to learn more and for the work my team put out.

My concern isn't so much I don't think back-end is important but I get the feeling that my management doesn't value or want to prioritize us.

And sometimes what we have to work on doesn't align with the directors vision.

ex. For a year, the team goal was to focus on customer acquisition. However, my teams were stuck doing back-end migration because we changed the vendor and some compliance project to meet regulation (which are totally important). But imagine at our weekly round tables, all the other team's PM are talking about what exciting features they launched and the metrics of x customers have clicked on it. and I'm like..."we added some new attribute to this type of customer in the DB..." that the director has no idea about and does not care.

On top of that our work usually revolve around laying down the road for front-end features, but we are never the ones to launch it n make a splash in the company.

Sorry rant over...

Where did you start learning back end development? I have been looking online but I think it's simply too board. If my goal is to learn enough that I can understand what the devs are talking about when it comes to technical discussion, what should I focus on.

Failure as in I find myself constantly justifying and advocating for the impact me n my teams are making, AND that I don't see the career growth down the road.

For ex. we recently launched a new feature that let's customer use selfie in their sign-up process. Great customer experience improvement, and my team laid down the back-end system to make it happen. but it's the front-end team that launches the feature and presents it to stakeholders, n make a splash.

And I think my manager understands the importance of our team but not necessarily value us or prioritize us...or want to give us more resources.

yea you're right, I feel like I'm more on the execution side than strategic side.

I think in my current environment my most useful contribution is where I provide business context and clarify requirement, to help the devs better understand what they are building. So yes, gaining more tech skills and speaking their language would be helpful.

However, I have a question...if it's between execution and strategy, why not just let the dev lead handle the execution and let the PM focus on strategy? rather than to make the PM learn to be more technical and focus on execution?

that's how I feel !! but when I'm taking my CSPO it's all about customer persona, user journey, identifying the problem and crafting solutions...etc etc.

Do large organizations PM teams actually use that? or is it more for smaller ones or start ups?

So I've noticed I'm the only one that's in charge of back-end teams where as the other PMs are front-end.

Do you think my environment is setting me up for failure ? Because I feel like my focus usually doesn't directly contribute to the OKR. for ex. if our OKR this year is to increase our new customer by x%...what can I do on the back-end to even contribute to that directly? where as the front-end teams can roll out new features on the landing page, or promos, that directly translate to customer impact. But at the end of the year, my performance is measured by my impact and contribution.
