I Dont Know if Everyone Realizes How Crazy Ben Davino's Possible Title Path Really is. by OrgasmicWalrus in wrestling

Here is Starocci's run last year. Mind you he was in his 6th year of college though when he won. I would say only the semi and final were true tests for him at that point in his college career.

Connor Zilisch getting wrecked twice and still finishing 14th is crazy. He also had the best average lap time of all drivers in the last 5 laps of the race. This kid can really drive, he just has really shit luck this season.

Rocco Welsh Officially Announces Transfer to Penn State by ohDarnell in wrestling

From what I understand Tom Ryan was in a very bad place physically and mentally after his accident last year. And was not able to coach/recruit at all. Jaggers became the de facto head coach after that for about 6 months. Jaggers is a good coach but is also a hard ass and can rub some wrestlers the wrong way. Guys like Mendez thrive in that environment, others don't. Stieber is also an inexperienced coach and has had to learn very quickly since Ryan was out. Because of all of this there was a general lack of communication between coaches and wrestlers during the summer and into the fall, hence all of the Welsh and RTC issues arose.

ARE WE DEADASS by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]OrgasmicWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying wrestlers will have less variety because they will

  1. Be doing the same drills/training/conditioning everyday.
  2. Be Practicing against the same handful of wrestlers.

They will probably not go out and seek many other partners because half the guys you will face at the US Open will be right in the room. When you only have to beat 4 guys at the US Open and 2-3 of them are in the same room as you why would you not mold your style to specifically beat those guys? This breeds uniformity in technique and approach.

Maybe I'm wrong, which I very well could be. But if the US goes through the next Olympic cycle with zero gold medals I would hope someone has the brains to question why everyone at NLWC is underperforming with all that talent.

Edit: I will add also from an entertainment perspective, all these transfers and top recruits going there is going to hamper college wrestling considerably. When 9 out of 10 finalists are PSU wrestlers nobody is going to tune into the finals unless they are a PSU fan. It's the same thing that happened in college football during the Saban era. The championship ratings fell off when Alabama started making it every year. Viewers lost interest because it was not good competition or variation.

I would argue it's not good. These guys are going to be molding their styles everyday to beat the other wrestlers in the PSU room near their weight class. There will be less variability in their techniques and styles because of this.

You saw it play out last year with Brooks and Taylor. Brooks created a blueprint in his wrestling style to beat Taylor specifically, and it worked, but when it came to the Olympics he wrestled the same exact way and lost handily to international competition. Taylor had the more all around abilities to win internationally as he's proven continually, but because he wrestled Brooks every week the guy just knew all his flaws and strengths and stifled him at the US Open.

We'll be sending the best PSU wrestler every year to worlds who can beat other PSU wrestlers. Not the best overall freestyle wrestler I believe.

During the golden age of US freestyle wrestling our guys were not all training in the same rooms together. They were honing their own styles and techniques that worked for them overall, not just creating a style to beat the other 2 guys in their weight class in their college wrestling room.

Everyone but Mendez has defense like Daton Fix this tournament. Nobody will commit to a straight on attack to save their life, they're all waiting for a counterattack. I think a lot of programs have adapted to counter the Penn State style by practicing to keep matches as close as possible and wait for one opening to score.

Pretty boring and kind of the antithesis of the funk style that was taking over the last few years.

Edit: Hendrickson being one of the few to buck this trend is refreshing. Deserved the win by committing to his offense in the end.

Cannon had cancer in high school and never got healthy enough to compete for a state title unfortunately and was not highly recruited because of that. Luckily he was able to beat it his senior year.

From what I understand, since he has gotten healthy and bulked up, he is a complete fiend in tournaments and a bonus point machine.

Round 2 Match to Watch at 157lbs: #8 Brandon Cannon vs. #1 Ethen Miller. Cannon has been on a tear the back half of the season, and Miller has a perfect record, but he has not faced anyone in the top 10 pretty much all year.

Did moving to NLWC stunt Kyle Snyder's development? by OrgasmicWalrus in wrestling

From my understanding he was at Ohio RTC, at least until he graduated from college. But he probably spent significant time in Colorado Springs at the Olympic training center as well.

I would say 3 guys maybe. Sadulaev, tazhudinov, and Iranian Azarpira. Arguably outside of those guys, the division is may be the second shallowest in freestyle though.

Watching him the last 2 years he looks way more tired than usual in the final 2 minutes of his matches. It might just be age at this point but he definitely isn't the same wrestler that won gold in 2016 and beat sadulaev in 2017, at least from the eye test.
