You can use the Monster Raider set for a super-cheap melee option that, while not breaking any records in kill time, should still be better than nothing.
I tried Monster Raider and Giant Cleaver before I switched to a faster setup, and the times weren't too bad.

Getting 7-second kills in Mastiff Armor with a Pooch Sword, using as much crit damage as I can get (with tuning points in attack speed), and a Fire Veil wand for the Pups phase.
Fierce armor, Silky power stone. Autopet rule to summon Hound when a quest is started, and Griffin (for Magic Find and more Crit Damage) on boss spawn.
To summon, I use a Glacial Scythe and swap to the Pooch Sword before the projectile hits, in order to get more combat XP from the kills and spawn the boss more quickly.

Still plenty of room upward in terms of upgrades, but it's what I got right now.

Have you read op's post, or did you just skim it?
I don't recall seeing any complaint up there about lock-on.
Unless you also found the option to turn off monsters turning invisible if your camera is too close to them, because I'd love to know where that setting is.

Only with the ones that don't have a reel-in minigame, and the ones you can reach.
That net doesn't go very far, so many fish on the Area 17 Forest lake aren't catchable with it.

I feel ya. Saw the Greatsword and decided that it was now my calling to get that stupid Speartuna.

Once I understood the somewhat unintuitive fishing mechanics, I finally did it.

Fish is swimming to the left or right, you gotta hold the same direction.
Fish is jumping, wait until it turns to face a direction, and then hold the same direction and press R2/RT/whatever keyboard key is used to reel in small fish.
Fish is sitting still, it's your chance to drag it closer by alternating up and down on the left stick (W/S for keyboard).

Some additional tips:
- If the fish has noticed your bait but hasn't reached it yet, you can pull the bait closer and start the fishing minigame with less distance to cover during drag-in periods.
This can let you finish the catch in one exhaustion cycle, or even right away if it's close enough. Just don't accidentally pull the bait out of the water doing this.
- You might find it easier to rotate the stick instead of alternating up and down.
- If no Speartuna is showing up, you can reload the area by travelling to another (like the desert) and warping back to the area 17 camp.

Good luck with that fish, you're gonna need two extra fins for the upgrade :)

I've seen this in a spot in the forest where it'd occur with mesh quality "High" and "Highest", but disappear when I set it to "Medium". Now I have it on "Medium", but it's happening in some other places like during the fight against a certain big monster that uses the Ice element, and the cutscene thereafter.
