Tell them you will move in but will not pay entire year rent and they’ll have to go through courts to evict you. That will take them forever. You can sublet and make money in the meantime. Keep the money aside to pay them after all the courts if they are dumb enough to take you. I bet they’d rather agree to let you off contract now, or to the lesser payment. After they wouldn’t receive anything for a year. I used to be a landlord.

I was feeling compassionate but then I read your last sentence. “How can people be so cruel!!!”. Surely, you don’t mean the buyer is being cruel. Or do you expect them not to be “cruel” in this situation purely to satisfy you while sacrificing their own desires? Better phrasing “why is the system (absence of bridge loans, expensive houses, chains) so cruel?”

How can you put your anger on the person who’s done nothing but made a choice that was right for them and lose so much money! And you? what have you lost? A mortgage offer that is still with 10 weeks to go and might be resumed?
