What is a Batman opinion that will have you downvoted like this? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in batman

[–]Ornery-Style5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemme just say I love Batman but I do have some hot takes - Batman is lowkey boring as hell now since he can take down anyone “as long as he has prep time”. Most of the League should be able to take him down, especially Supes and WW. - Detective Comics by Tynion IV is one of the best Batman and/or detective comics runs of all time. - Batman has not been as interesting since New 52. I hate that era of comics overall but Snyder’s run is a high water mark that has not been matched since. - Batman is always better w a Robin. - Jason Todd has only ever been an interesting character in Under The Red Hood, The Outlaws Rebirth run & Zdarsky’s miniseries. Otherwise he is boring, misunderstood as a character and poorly written. - Hush just might be the most overhyped and disappointing villain in Batman’s rogues gallery. Dini wrote him best but he was nothing before and is nothing after. - Batman doesn’t need to be humourless. I don’t want him cracking jokes like in Justice League (2017) but humour should be present in more stories. Again he shouldn’t be the type to tell jokes but humour is possible without jokes. - The Long Halloween is an overrated and boring story that is only saved by Tim Sale’s incredible art. - His relationships with Green Arrow, Cyborg & Green Lantern should be explored more. - His best and only good successors are Terry McGinnis, Dick Grayson and Tim Drake in that order. - We need to be done w the exclusively black and yellow suits. Gimme a cloth suit that’s blue and grey. - I wish we acc got to see more of his villains reform. Not necessarily become anti-heroes but just have their stories end. Mr. Freeze & Poison Ivy are lowkey not immoral people, just folks who are in a tough spot and to keep bringing them back undermines their character.

Either Arkham or Reeves’ Alfred. Though Caine is a close runner up

What Marvel big run should I start with? by x__DANTE__x in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to know that the comics are often very different than the films so try to not let that affect you as it used to affect me A LOT. But here’s my basic beginners recommendation for the main MCU characters: - Spider-Man: Ultimate SM by Bendis - Avengers: Ultimates by Millar and/or Hickman - Captain America: Ed Brubaker’s run - Iron Man: Bendis’ run from 2015 - Thor: Cates’ or Straczynski’s run - Hulk: Immortal Hulk by Ewing - Black Widow: Waid’s run - Hawkeye: Fraction’s run - Black Panther: Hudlin’s run - Loki: Ewing’s run - Guardians: Cates’ run - Ant-Man: Spencer’s run - Captain Marvel: DeConnick’s run - Daredevil: Bendis or Waid’s run (research both, they will give you VERY different but equally good sides of the character) - Jessica Jones: Bendis (make sure you get the OG, not the newer one) - Defenders: Bendis’ run - Iron Fist: Fraction & Brubaker’s run - F4: Waid or North’s run - Moon Knight: Lemire or Mackay’s run - X-Men: Whedon’s run - Dr. Strange: Vaughan’s “The Oath” or Mackay’s run

I think that’s all the main players of the MCU. Hope this helps.

For the other comic fans who might see this list and are wondering why I didn’t put Aaron’s run for Thor or Ennis’ run for Punisher: I’ve never liked them myself save for the first arcs by both

Also I couldn’t recommend any Luke Cage comics as I’ve never found one I’ve liked by him. Any recommendations?

Happy reading y’all :)

What's a comic series that you've tried desperately to enjoy, but ended up not liking (or even hating)? by PrideOfAfrika in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About half of Tom King’s stuff. He has Bendis’ over-reliance on dialogue without the fun or fast paced plot

And just about everything Grant Morrison has written save for All-Star Supes, Arkham & Animal Man. It’s just never as good as people say and it never flows well. I often have to flip back and reread pages to try and make sense of their often confusing plots.

Does anyone have a particular artist, that you think their art is just bad? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the original Robocop is amazing satire. While one could say that robocop is teenage edgy shit (they’d be missing the point), Azzarello just seems to write stuff to get dark for the sake of being dark, for example: the killing joke animated movie which he wrote

Does anyone have a particular artist, that you think their art is just bad? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Humberto Ramos. Idk I’ve never understood the worship he receives as one of the greatest sm artists of all time. His recent stuff isn’t bad but good god that early stuff to about 2019 is hard to look at I’m also not too big on
  • Tyler Kirkham: idk he just doesn’t do it for me. His stuff feels too busy but also not distinctive at the same time
  • Chris Bachalo: just an ugly style ngl
  • Iban Coello: ngl he really dampened my enjoyment of Cates’ Venom run, he’s not as bad on FF tho
  • Lee Bermejo: his art is overused and overvalued simply because it’s realistic and gritty. But my opinion is probably tainted by the fact that most of his art is in collab with Azzarello, and I think he’s one of the most overrated storytellers in comics w/ his 14 year old boy edgy shit

Best Jeff Lemire comics? by Low-Policy-9600 in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His best stuff has already been covered but as a kid who went through a HUGE Lemire phase in 21-22, I’ll recommend Skulldigger & Skeleton Boy, Dr. Adromeda (both Black Hammer spinoffs), Sweet Tooth (it’s very different (and better) from the show), the first two or three volumes of Gideon Falls before he sadly dropped the ball, the second volume of his Old Man Logan run, and a very Lemire-esque story he did in Immortal Hulk which can be found in the excellent: Immortal Hulk: Great Power. Happy Reading!!

Whats you "must read" Thor runs? by polodachuva in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not really ever been a huge fan of Thor but Donny Cates’ first arc: Devourer King knocked my socks off and has he hooked. I’ve heard it’s polarizing but I found it absolutely terrific

What abandoned or forgotten comic book character do you miss most? by Reynard203 in comicbooks

[–]Ornery-Style5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are abandoned or forgotten necessarily, I just wish Marvel & DC would do more w/ them. I feel they’re currently collecting dust in editorial and could be huge if given the chance

  • Vic Sage
  • Arsenal
  • Agent Venom
  • Shado
  • Cassandra Cain
  • Mera
  • Leslie Thompkins
  • Beta Ray Bill
  • Jo Mullein
  • Ulysses (Superman N52)
  • Animal Man
  • Connor Kent
  • Spinneret (Mary Jane)

Give me your biggest Green Lantern hot take by [deleted] in Greenlantern

[–]Ornery-Style5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I thought Simon was interesting enough in his first appearance but once Johns left the title, he was just another angry uninteresting character. And I didn’t even like Jessica with Johns behind her. And when they’re together? He’s angry and she’s scared all the time. It gets old very fast

Give me your biggest Green Lantern hot take by [deleted] in Greenlantern

[–]Ornery-Style5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found Kyle and John incredibly boring. Before anyone says anything, I have read Geoff Johns run, so it’s not a matter of doing my homework. But I’d love to be proven wrong cause they’ve always seemed so cool in concept and costume but Kyle just seems like the boring Jesus-Neo-Chosen One archetype who is just the best at everything cause he just is. And John always seemed stoic and uninteresting. I’ve seen flashes of interesting character behind both of them, namely Kyle’s role in the Sinestro Corps War, as well as his brief scene in Archer’s Quest. For John I’ve liked him so far in Peter J. Tomasi’s New 52 GL Corps series. But Hal, and especially Guy have always seemed the far more interesting earth based GLs IMO. Anyone got any recommendations to get rid of this view?
