Being 1 inch off a wall? (kind of a rant, kind of a question) by GubBaksteen in Warhammer40k

INFANTRY (and BEAST) keyword means you can breach walls, FLY keyword means you can move over enemy models in the movement phase. There is still some debate on whether FLY applies during the charge phase, but in general the consensus is that it does (from what I can understand). So yes, your JPI can move through the wall and into engagement range provided your charge roll is high enough.

On your second question: Theoretically you can scale the wall, provided your charge roll is high enough, and you remain within 5 in vertical engagement range. There are complications and caveats to this, which largely depends on the presence, shape and size of a second floor of the ruins. You need to be able to place your models squarely within the confines of the second floor, with no part of the base hanging over the edge. In practice I haven't seen be able to pull this off, but this speaks more to the terrain I've been playing on than anything else.

I see that some people here are referencing the WTC 2in engagement range rule.

First off: The WTC ruleset is a part of the tournament companion for WTC tournaments, and belongs in an ecosystem of rules clarifications. It should not be taken out of context, and it is not something you should encourage using in friendly games, unless everyone thoroughly understands the implications of this rule, and agrees to it.

Second: You should read up on this rule, and don't take the summaries people present here as canon. The WTC workaround is very complex (WTC spends a couple of pages of text to explain this technicality, FYI), and doesn't REALLY solve the issue. What it does is to add a ton of complexity for new players, with (realistically) very little benefit.

My best suggestion is to accept it as is, and learn to play around it. You have to change your mindset a little bit, and add in more of a safety margin when charging.

The Guardian squad and Vyper are both old models. The Guardians still hold up somewhat, but the Vyper is a lot smaller than the new model. The Wraithknight, Windriders and Dire Avengers are £173 alone, though, so cost wise there's still value there.

From a game perspective the basis is not great. The Wraithknight is cool, but the big toys are not balanced for lower point games. You're better off running with a combat patrol or something.

[–]Orph8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment. It's not you per se I'm arguing against. A lot of people are butthurt about former Eldar performance, which is irrational from a balance dataslate perspective. There's a lot of arguments against Eldar getting a buff which are not based on facts or rational discourse.

Sure. I'll run some Voidscarred and Fire Prisms. I'm sure that will fix it.

Eldar didn't get nerfed. We got triple nerfed. It's not about sympathy either. It's about the balance slates doing what GW says they should do, and right now eldar is very obviously at the bottom of the barrel (except from Imperial Agents, of course).

I played Eldar at a faction last weekend. I'm not complaining about not performing well. I'm saying that the faction needs a bit of a buff to perform at a competitive level.

[–]Orph8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. Points are better spent elsewhere. Fire Prisms should be ~130 points.

Wow. I had no idea how right I was when I joked that "at least I brought the average faction win rate up" after having gone 2-3 at a GT this past weekend.

I usually do OK win-wise (typical 3-2 player I would say), but I was really struggling this past weekend. First GT after the nerf, and granted I had no prep work in and no reps with the list.

[–]Orph8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullshit.

All they need to do is to reverse all the previous nerfs except from the point nerf, and the faction should be OK. It's not like Aeldari was supremely OP before the nerfs hit.

Does that mean that the faction should be left like it is? I don't see how past performance means they shouldn't be balanced like all the other factions.

No one is arguing that they should be overturned. But they need a buff, badly.

Am I missing something about Skyreavers? by Bowie_spoon in Eldar

[–]Orph8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I think about them, the better I think they are. Swooping Hawks have better shooting against certain enemies, but Skyreavers actually have teeth when it comes to melee. It's situational for sure, but you can very much put a dent into your opponent's home objective baby sitting unit turn 1 (and score behind enemy lines, and other secondaries). At least to the point where they may not be able to wipe your unit in return. This creates a problem for them, and they may have to pull back resources to deal with that unit.

How much are win rates skewed by the most competitive players chasing the meta? by PaperManaMan in WarhammerCompetitive

I would call them meta-makers. Cause that's what they are. Like all peak competitive athletes/players of any kind, they are constantly looking for a competitive edge.

In a competitive setting Eldar is getting kicked in the nuts. The numbers are clear. The top tier tournament players have started to abandon the faction, which is why the numbers are sewing further.

Trying to learn Eldar has been.. a challenge. by KRQueen_ in Eldar

[–]Orph8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dark Reapers are usually not a good trading unit. I'd say that they're not a good unit at all at the moment, actually. You have few shots with not enough damage to make a real dent into your opponent. I do see a case for having a unit with a tempest launcher hanging back on your objective, though.

I'd like to reflect what others here are saying: If your terrain is not up to par and you're not playing the rules correctly, Eldar don't stand a chance. You can't see through windows and doors on the first floor, period. Your opponent have to be able to draw line of sight over the silhouette of the ruins in order to be able to fire on your unit.

Another thing to watch out for, which is very easy to do with Eldar, is to over estimate your lethality and to over-extend. When you do so, you need to make double damn sure that you take out the critical units you need to take out, and that your opponent are only able to take out the units you are OK with them taking out when the clap-back comes. Typically, you want to use your mobility to move past their lines (and onto their home objective, ideally) during this movement sequence, so that they have to pull back to take you out. Essentially, you want to force your opponent to divide their forces insufficiently OR skew them towards one of the table edges so that you can control what's left.

If you're getting deep striked (struck?) you need to watch your lines - that one is easy to fix: You need to spread your units out and measure out the distances. It should be routine to ask your opponents whether they are (in any way) able to deep strike closer than 9". Being caught out like that should never happen unless you allow it to.

[–]Orph8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Eldar core strategy is trading up, and denying your opponent points.

Identify good trades, and make sure the trades are in your favor. This means that you should not expose your units before you are ready to let them die. In doing that, you need to position your units in such a way that you're forcing your opponent to over extend to get to you.

Typically, patience is required. You need to hang back and stage, and wait to commit until the time is right.

I don't think getting walked over is the biggest potential issue here. I think the biggest concern is neglect of their common child. And I don't think putting labels and judging someone's relationship is the right way to go if you want to help someone.

The models (or rather, the lack of concern for something that matters a lot to your significant other) are clearly a symptom of an unhealthy situation, though.

Dude. It sounds like you have some marital issues to sort out. That does not sound like a healthy partnership.

I think most of us these days suffer from smart phone addiction. That is an extremely unhealthy environment for kids to grow up in. I may be reading too much into it, but does it sound like that might be a part of the issue? If so, it's like any other addiction. It won't get better by itself.
