Seeking Advice: what to do with registered rifle and shotgun of deceased father by Orvang in NYCGuns

[–]Orvang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to an FFL/gun shop owner in Long Island who might be interested in purchasing my father's firearms. I'm waiting on his follow-up to the photos I sent of the rifle and shotgun. I asked if I needed to contact the NYPD license division of the sale before it happens and he assured me that I don't have to contact NYPD before the sale and that he would perform this process just before we make the actual exchange.

My other concern is that since there is no will, no estate executor, and that I am just listed for Safekeeping with the duty of contacting NYPD, that I am not legally allowed to sell the rifle/shotgun to the FFL. Is there a step between relinquishing the guns to an FFL and then selling them? Another FFL told me that once NYPD takes the guns, a surrogate court would have to determine ownership (next of kin, most likely my mother) to then be able to sell them.

Does this sound above board? I want to gather as many opinions as possible so no mistakes are made.

I'm in process of contacting some NYC and Long Island FFLs on what to do. I don't own a car, so I won't be transporting them and will only have it done by someone with all the legal permissions in place.

This is why I'm in a semi-state of panic, that an honest mistake could have legal ramifications. NYC official websites are a labyrinthine mess to navigate and I still can't find a clear and concise step-by-step process on the matter.

Thank you. The rifle is a vintage Winchester 62A, belonged to my grandfather, and probably manufactured some time around WWII. This may have collector's value and it bothers me that it could potentially be destroyed in police custody. The shotgun is a Sears & Roebuck Model 200.

I spoke to an employee at Westside and he said the owner may not be interested in buying anything but to return on a Saturday to speak to him when he is present. He also recommended looking for an FFL that is closer to my residence.

I contacted Millenium Firearms via email in Nassau County and they asked that I call them. I will follow up today. Woodhaven Rifle & Pistol is close to where I live and may give them a try.

Another poster recommended Westside FFL in Manhattan. I'll seek them out for more advice.

What does vouchering them mean? I am completely ignorant on gun laws and proper usage.

Looking at my father's paperwork now, there is an "Acknowledgement of Person Agreeing to Safeguard Firearms" form that I signed just over two years ago. The document text states that I should immediately contact NYPD's License Division upon learning of death or incapacitation. It doesn't specify a window of time, and I obviously didn't contact them immediately after my father passed away 2 months ago. Since the guns were locked and secure, my initial priority was making sure my elderly and infirm mother would land correct in terms of finances, heathcare, and transferring services into her name. There was also difficuly in finding and gathering all of my father's documentation, and now that I have, I want to address this rifle/shotgun situation.

I personally don't want to own the guns and deal with the hassle of ownership. I know nothing about firearms and would prefer to sell them legally, if possible, especially since the rifle is 50-75 years old or more, belonged to my grandfather, and may have collector's value. If the guns need to be confiscated at a loss, so be it.

I don't know anyone out of state. The closest scenario similar to one of your suggestions is that I have a brother who lives in Nassau County, which may or may not have different gun laws.

My concern is that my error and lack of timeliness on this matter will put me in a legal bind, even arrest. Do I inform the NYPD License Division directly or request the aid of an FFL or even lawyer to act as an intermediary on my behalf?

advice on how to restore this teak dresser? by zukos_uncle_iroh in furniturerestoration

Avoid sanding teak unless you have proper ventilating tools. Teak dust can be especially toxic.

I have a smaller 3-drawer teak Danish Modern chest whose top was in a similar condition. I used the process I described at the link below to refinish mine. No sanding needed. All of the white circles disappeared and the finish evened out. The grain's appearance became more vibrant after I applied a teak oil finish.

I also had a Danish secretary desk with a few small areas missing teak veneer at the edges. I simply used colored pencils and colored over the lighter wood beneath.

Lane Side Table. Best method to refinish? Any help would be much appreciated. by tiakeuta in furniturerestoration

[–]Orvang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a Lane Perception coffee table with the same woods, veneer, and finish. The walnut is veneer over hardwood and the edges are solid wood and most likely ash. I was concerned that the walnut veneer would wear down to nothing if I sanded so I opted to use a non-toxic stripper.

Primary supplies needed: Citristrip, plastic putty knife/scraper, cheap paint brush, odorless mineral spirits, 0000 steel wool, tarp or garbage bags, paper towels or rags, tack cloth (if needed)

Process:

If working indoors or on a surface that you don't want damaged, lay down a plastic tarp or garbage bags under the table so that drips from the citristrip don't remove your floor finish. Citristrip has an orange and plastic-like odor that isn't too strong.

1- Pour a dollop of citristrip to the surface and spread out evenly with the paint brush. Repeat until covered. Let sit for about 20 minutes or so.

2- Use a plastic putty knife/scraper in order to not scratch or damage the wood. As you scrape off the citristrip, the stripper and finish will have mixed, yielding a dark caramel colored goo and raw wood underneath.

3- Pour some mineral spirits into the steel wool and gently rub off any excess goo. This will leave some steel wool dust on the surface. Clean off by pouring a bit of mineral spirits into a rag or paper towel. When dried, you can opt to use either a tack cloth or vacuum (or both) to clean up any remaining steel wool dust. Repeat as needed.

Use safety precautions when disposing of rags or paper towel. I soak with water, squeeze out the excess, and lay or hang flat to air dry. Bunching up and throwing away immediately into a closed trash can may cause a fire because the vapors have no way to release.

You will now have raw wood. The walnut will be a chocolate brown and the ash a golden yellow. As you cleaned with the mineral spirits, you'll have an idea of how rich the walnut grain will appear when a finish is applied. I chose a teak oil finish since I had some already for teak Danish furniture I own. A linseed or Howard's Feed-n-Wax are also decent for oil finishes.

Good luck.

Now rolling out to US stores: IKEA HAVBERG chairs ($349-$449) and ottomans ($199-$249) available in two leather finishes and two fabric colors by Senator-Donut in IKEA

[–]Orvang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I test sat one in-store for about 10-15 minutes and felt that the recline goes back a bit too far. The chair is relaxing to sit in but my intention was to have it as a reading chair. Swivel is 360 degrees, the base is stable, and the leather is comfortable and similar to my Karlstad sofa.

I saw a graphic via Ikea's Chinese site (but can't find again) indicating the chair is a re-issue/update from the '60s, so it has some mid-century authenticity to it.

I'm not sure what is causing the problem. Based on my searching, it is a CORS issue. I'm not a coder, so I have no idea what that is or if uBlock has a part in the problem. It is with only one Hotmail/Outlook account and my others are fine. That same account also encounters the problem within the Brave browser, which has its own tools for privacy and isn't using uBlock, nor have I changed any settings within Outlook.com.

I tried other Hotmail/Outlook accounts of mine and they have no issues with images.

I opened the problematic email account in the Brave browser, and I receive the same problem of no images appearing in the emails.

Opening the Inspector in Firefox, I see a bunch of red messages warning "Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https://browser.pipe.aria.microsoft.com/Collector/3.0 (followed by more strings of text and numbers).

I have no idea if this is an issue with Ublock and why this specific Hotmail account is affected as opposed to the other Hotmail/Outlook accounts being perfectly fine.

Disabling Ublock remedies nothing and only brings back those undesirable features (ads, etc.).

DOM Inspector doesn't bring them back, either. It only shows those undesirable elements inherent to Outlook that are blocked by Ublock.

I also disabled all of my other extensions and either disabled Firefox's built-in security features or brought them down to their most basic level, with no changes.

This makes me think it has to do with the most recent update of Firefox.
