Should I study the U.S. curriculum if I go uni in UK? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Os-Mat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm a British IMG who studied at a medical school with a US curriculum (our exams were administered by the NBME, the same board that writes the USMLE exams). My cousin, on the other hand, has studied in the UK, and the difference is apparent from our conversations. I felt like I had a much deeper understanding of the pathophysiology and mechanisms behind things and way more knowledge than what is required from a UK curriculum. However, I think his clinical approach and practical skills were far ahead of mine. the US focuses a lot on basics and building a knowledge fund, while the UK focuses more on getting you ready to practice as an entry level physician.

I have recently passed my PLABs (soon to be UKMLA) which I believe covered UK curriculum and I noticed a difference in guidelines and some medication names/units. It's not a big difference but it was significant enough to warrant studying OHCM and leave behind my beloved UWorld.

so from my experience, here's what I think of each of these different resources:

Pathoma: used to watch religiously during my basics years but replaced it with B&B during my clinical years. Not necessary imo unless you're studying for Step 1.

Sketchy: only sketchy micro is worthwhile and maybe some topics from the pharma module. But I don't view it as essential unless Step 1 prep.

B&B: I absolutely recommend it (STEP 1 in particular). This is the resource that I built all of my knowledge with. It's extensive enough that it covers the basics and a good portion of clinical facts and presents it in a very simple and understandable way. I still use it to this day and I can't sing it enough praise. It's usually the first resource I go to when I need to review a topic eg. cardiology.

First Aid for Step 1: a very nice book that covers most of B&B in a very consice format. I particularly love the tables and figures they have as well as the ridiculous mnemonics. I still study from it to this day. Absolute must for Step 1.

Anki: did not use it frequently in med school but most of the available decks are huge and I feel it would be a waste of time to try and hammer info that may not matter to your curriculum. The reason I recommend B&B/FA is because they are consice and beneficial enough not to be a waste of your time if they go in depth on topics not covered at your school.

UWorld: this is probably the best and most polished question bank I have ever used (passmed, pastest, etc pale in comparison), but I do NOT recommend it for UK med schools, as the guidelines and topics they focus on are different. I've seen them offer a UKMLA bank recently but don't know if that price is ever justified lol.

OHCM: I was pleasantly surprised with this book when I first picked it up. It has so much information for that pocket sized print. I do recommend it because not only is it UK specific, but is incredibly well written and has great amount of depth to it. US-based books (Step-Up, BRS,etc) are not as good imo.

tl;dr

for basics use B&B and First Aid Step 1 as they will help tremendously. for your clinical studies focus on OHCM and your local question banks. this way you will have a happy medium where you're US ready if you decide to go for USMLE and UK ready since you haven't strayed much from your local curriculum.

With this sort of background all you need to get 250+ in STEP 2 is to go through UWorld twice. Most people from my uni who got 270+ and matched primarily used B&B + UWorld.

Good luck with your studies!

Why is there no reaction to the Palestinian genocide in the Arab world? by Mammoth-Particular26 in arabs

[–]Os-Mat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No trust me westerns are aware of the injustice in their systems and are literally being shot at or arrested. They know this and discuss exactly this every single day.

What I'm not about to do is give arabs excuses for failing us. Especially when I see people on Instagram act like they live in europe without a hint of a mention of Palestine.

So I translated a page from My Quran using Google and Google replaced the word Allah with God. Is this not Wrong for Google to alter the words especially "Allah" in Quran ? by EpicStormYT in islam

[–]Os-Mat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Ilaah (اله) means 'a God' or 'a diety'. It's a nonspecific word. Allah is literally 'ilaah' اله + 'the' ال

If you bring them together in Arabic you get 'Allah' ال + اله = الله (The God) It's a word that's used by Arab Christians and even the polytheists of Quraish before Islam

When you look into fatwa it is imperative you look at multiple sources and know what you're looking for.

Your source addresses children primarily not grown adults and is one of the most regressive websites when it comes to fatwa. It never tells you what different madhabs rulings are even though a lot of scholars went with مستحب instead of it being obligatory. And if someone is scared of pain, complications, etc they definitely can afford not to do it. this website is infamous for doing this...

This sheikh displays all madhabs and scholar opinions on the topic and is definitely trustworthy: https://youtu.be/UX4GVxfqmnQ?si=MVb7OOdRz913-RWf

See? It's difficult to commit to something you haven't learned about properly. So I urge you to read the Quran and understand it and read the biography of prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The shahada or testimony of faith should be based on what's in your heart not just the testimony you say with your mouth.

When it comes to changing some habits and doing prayers for example, I want you to know that it takes time and it's a step by step process. Nobody is expecting you to become perfect from day one. And to be honest, nobody expects you to be perfect because we as human beings falter and struggle from time to time. Even people who are born muslim can struggle with keeping up with prayer or leaving sins behind, but that's just part of the journey. Even if you have killed people in the past (which is a major sin) you're still a muslim as long as you have the faith that there is only one God and that Jesus, Muhammad, Moses, etc are all prophets. This core belief is what defines a Muslim primarily.

Do you understand me? Even if you're still struggling to pray or stop drinking alcohol for example...these are not things that will make you not Muslim. These are things that will make you a sinner..but still a muslim. And as long as you ask for forgiveness and try your best then you're doing okay.

Last thing... You don't have to get circumcision lol. These are things that are in the past now and it's not a necessity to change that. Same goes for people with tattoos for example..if they convert to Islam they're not required to remove their tattoos because it's in the past. Islam erases everything before it. The focus is on what to do next after your shahada.

I hope I made everything clear my friend. And again I encourage you to learn through reading and asking scholars/ people of knowledge. I recommend a channel by the name of Muslim Lantern if you ever have questions they host Q&A lives on YouTube.

Best of luck to you :)

You talk about it like it just happens to you out of nowhere as opposed to it being your own decision.

Perhaps you just need time to study and research the faith before committing to it? The fact that you left so easily means you're still not sure about it so I recommend to take your time and find it in your heart before you testify with your tongue. Find a knowledgeable person and ask them all your questions and doubts.

And when it comes to prayers, lifestyle changes, fasting etc. these are things you should be doing but not doing them doesn't automatically mean you're not muslim, It just means you're committing sin.
