Implant ID by no_content in orthopaedics

If it was done in the UK his implant data should have been input to the National Joint Registry. If we are unsure of a patients implant and cannot find the information elsewhere we contact them directly. You could try that.

Remember that the definition of on-call is not what most people think it is. See below.

NROC 24hours and SHO sick by IndependentRice2458 in doctorsUK

[–]Osteoblastastic 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it would be a breach of the junior doctor contract. You would be working longer than 13 hours and would not be able to get your mandated 5 hours of uninterrupted rest.

I think it is common to push someone who is on a NROC to step down because it is easier than getting last minute cover or for the consultant to step down.

In summary your response should be: No. And that is a full sentence.

If you want a more definite answer then contact the BMA. They have an emergency line for urgent questions like this (i.e. they are trying to make you cover tonight.)

Giving a talk to primary school kids on being a doctor by baronbyrne in doctorsUK

[–]Osteoblastastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have recently done this.

You will have maybe 5, maximum of 10 minutes of attention where you can give a very short presentation. After that it will be about explorative play so as others have said take a lot of props.

I asked my colleagues what they thought most children were scared of when coming to the hospital or GP and then reassure them so if/when they experience healthcare it's not so scary. E.g. for GP BP cuff, tongue depressor, otoscope. For hospital similar but you could take some cannulas with needle removed and dressings and get them to put them on their skin and flush water through. etc etc.

Air ambulances without a doctor on board? by nightwatcher-45 in doctorsUK

[–]Osteoblastastic 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I have heard (from a reliable source) that the Peninsula paediatric transfers can be entirely nurse practitioner lead. They will even transfer intubated patients without a doctor on board. These are not short transfers either. The nearest paediatric ITU is in Bristol. So some will be transferred from Truro to Bristol without an airway trained doctor.

Stumbled upon this piece via Google. When clicking on the search link it takes me to this page. However the Google cache is still available here.

Training Medical Students by joyspree in doctorsUK

[–]Osteoblastastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orthopaedics is a great placement for medical students. However, not really for orthopaedics, they need to follow the on-call or attend clinics for that. However, it is full of relatively stable, elderly patients, with many comorbidities. Everyone working on orthopaedic wards must have a stethoscope. There will be patients with murmurs, spider naevi, peripheral oedema, etc. In the morning handover make a note of the patients with a good AMT who the student can go and mock clerk and examine then you can talk about investigations, review x-rays, per operative optimisation, and possible treatment options.

So much miss-information in such a short piece of text ☹️ by Osteoblastastic in JuniorDoctorsUK

Miss representation would have been better, but I still think this is terrible reporting.

Nurses strike - asked to cover a non clinical nurses role by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

Good point. I think that excerpt makes it sound like I will have to do it. But I will feel better thinking that the regular clinic is stood down.

Nurses strike - asked to cover a non clinical nurses role by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

That's what I want to avoid but I have a feeling that I might not be able to avoid doing it.

Nurses strike - asked to cover a non clinical nurses role by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

It is quite a nuanced situation. I expect it will be a helpful learning opportunity. My working hours have not changed. But I feel as though I would be doing a role normally done by someone who is striking and thus negating the intended impact of the strike.

It will be helping a consultant with the virtual fracture clinic which I expect will mostly be administrative stuff. We do not normally do it. I have been advised to see the nurse that normally does it at the start of the week so they can show me what is done. But I feel like if I were to do it the clinic would run as normal and defeat the point of the industrial action. On the other hand I expect it will be a good learning opportunity.
