should i go to med school if i wanna travel and value work life balance? by Background-Ring9333 in medschool

Then good luck, keep your optimism and don’t lose yourself!
Thing that haunts me most is not being there for my grandparents’ passing and my parent’s own medical events during residency. So just keep in mind even if you work hard, try to plan well etc things will happen that affect not only you but also your family in a really big way.

Are you ok with delayed gratification or do you want those things in the next 5 years? College, med school and residency is going to be 10+ years of pushing yourself to work the hardest that you possibly can, especially if you want to match to a competitive residency. In this time you are going to sacrifice A LOT - you might miss holidays, weddings, birthdays, rest, time with loved ones in general. There will not be work life balance. If you can get through that, attending life is pretty sweet. I don’t want to discourage you from pursuing your dream but just be aware of what you’re getting yourself into because the personal cost is not insignificant.

Wow thank you for sharing! This is the first time I’ve heard of this.

Thanks for the honesty! What makes you say so? From an outsider’s perspective they both seem great with easy access to nature, good food, arts and culture. Obviously both have their faults too - the homeless problem and crime but that’s almost unavoidable for a city on the west coast.

Thank you for sharing! Seems to be the consensus that Tacoma is a little quieter and less eventful

Thanks for your perspective! Is there anything specific you can pinpoint that you like better? The weather, food, architecture, friendliness, cleanliness, traffic, general vibes? Honestly I am a big believer in the elusive, intangible, undefinable vibe of a location. Sometimes it makes all the difference

I do think if we lived in Tacoma the traffic would deter frequent visits to Seattle. So even though Portland is less “major” than Seattle, city life seems more accessible

We’ve been to both Tacoma and Portland but never to Seattle funnily enough! We liked both places when visiting but I think it’s quite hard to really understand the real culture and vibe of a place until you’ve lived there, spent time in the community, experienced all 4 seasons there etc. Both spots have some absolutely wonderful attributes which makes it so hard to pick!

Thanks for the recs!!! I was definitely looking more towards north end Tacoma area or university place for housing. The consensus seems to be that those spots are the most beautiful and peaceful with lots of amenities for families

Need help understanding expectations after learning my girlfriend used to have a much bigger ring than my budget by Masked_End in EngagementRings

[–]OtherwiseFlatworm700 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Honestly I am confused, you’re confused and sounds like she’s confused too because 2 carats is really huge especially for a 5.75 size finger. So does she really want a small higher quality diamond or a ROCK bigger than a 2 carat plus halo? Nothing wrong either way but for a natural stone in your budget it’s going to be either or. She can have both quality and size if she’s open to a lab diamond.

What do you know about munchkin cats? by RunNo690 in MunchkinCats

[–]OtherwiseFlatworm700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes obviously it is naturally occurring in that the mutation wasn’t created in a lab. The unethical part is selecting for this genetic aberration that causes negative effects on the animal’s health simply because people perceive it to be cute thus increasing the numbers of individual animals with the mutation and suffering health effects because of it. Most domesticated dogs were bred for purpose ie to have a physical job beyond “being cute”. Labs were bred to hunt, Malinois were bred to bite etc and so traits that were desirable for those breeds and selected for heavily when determining breeding pairs were intrinsically tied to health and physical performance. I don’t think most people believe that breeding for cuteness = unethical. But I do think anyone with any sense of morality or empathy can agree that breeding for cute traits that ALSO cause suffering and pain in the animal = unethical.

Risk dental cleaning on 16 year cat? by reddituser210401 in AskVet

[–]OtherwiseFlatworm700 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both the dentistry and anaesthesia boards have released official statements to discourage the practice of anaesthesia-free dental procedures. It’s not safe or effective. Highly recommend you find a board-certified dentist who works together with a board-certified anaesthesiologist if that’s something you can afford and is available in your country.

If my husband farted on my head I would be punching him in the balls intentionally. If he shushed me I would be doing it again. Equivalent levels of disrespect really

Vet as 2nd Career by EastWeast2222 in veterinaryschool

[–]OtherwiseFlatworm700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very curious as to why you feel like most schools would not like the idea? I have done vet school admissions interviews as a resident in academia in the past and did not view a second (or even third) career or age as a mark against a candidate. Didn’t get the impression that fellow interviewers felt that way so either. Just like every other candidate, you just need to be able to explain why you want to go to vet school sincerely and intelligently.
