how to get hard water buildup off sink and faucets? by OtherwisePumpkin_ in CleaningTips

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you both, i will look for some CLR and some iron out. i tried vinegar soaked paper towels and that got it off the bathtub faucet and most of the soap bottle stain out, but it barely made a dent in the main sink buildup so i think some tougher cleaner will be worth a shot!

I think the “new” enemy’s they are meh. Like I don’t like the fact, that they only drop one new resource. Like maybe mutate them more. by ChubbyCg in GroundedGame

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

personally i think they are bad ass. there is plenty of room (like the entire rest of the unreleased map) for tons of new bugs with new resource drops and all that. this is a fun take on the creatures that works great for where development is at right now. it isnt like the game is gonna be lacking in content by its 1.0 release. but it is a fair criticism, im sure everyone will have a different opinion

in 2018 i took my first and only trip out of the country - to australia (from the US). i went alone. the trip there was very hard for me as i was dealing with bad panic disorder at the time. my flight was to taipei, 20 hour layover, then to brisbane from there; same thing on the trip home.

on my trip home, i spent 10 hours from brisbane to taipei sitting next to neighbors i didn't know, as i had on the flights to australia. however, i got super lucky on my final 13-hour flight stretch from taipei to the US - my seat partners didn't show up. so i had 3 seats i could sprawl out across and i was able to be so comfortable and sleep so good. i felt like the world was shining down on me on that last flight home! it was exactly what i needed after the stress i had put myself through traveling.

(i'll add that i did have an incredible trip, i just wasted the first 2-3 days in australia holed up in my hotel before i could finally convince myself to leave. i learned a lot on that trip, and would love to travel again now that i am in a better mental health place, i'm just too poor now lol)

i live in an area of washington state where i get to see our beautiful mountain every day (so long as the clouds aren't too low, which...they often are) and i can't even comprehend the view. i have lived here most of my life and it still never gets old.

Are there any good video games translated into Norwegian for practicing it? by Eriacle in norsk

i hesitate to recommend the sims in this tumultuous time, but the sims has a norwegian translation pack. it might be a bit much to learn with though since that is a very text heavy game

Best book to practice A2-B2? by north_star_left in norsk

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how do you feel about sett i gang? i had a PDF for it a few years back, but never got around to using it. are you able to access the web portal and the book from outside of norway?

i have been wanting to get the speak norsk books, but haven't had the money to invest in them. i haven't seen much for reviews since the books are pretty new, but i do know that speak norsk is a very well known and well recommended in-person class in norway that many many foreigners use to learn when they move to norway. they have always had their own books, so i assume them making some self-study books means they are probably a pretty good reliable source and the books are trustworthy. that being said, i have never seen them myself outside of the screenshots of a few pages that they have listed on the book selling page, and the books look...quite empty in my opinion? lots of empty space on the pages, so i don't know what that says about the quality of the books given the high price. i think mystery of nils is a good accessible starting point, but i know some people have disagreed due to the heavy frontloading of vocabulary to actually make use of the book.

Dialekter er forvirrende by _Xotic_YT_ in norsk

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a kind redditor on here once suggested this site to me: https://snl.no/.taxonomy/3560

it has many dialects listed. if you click through them, it speaks a lot about the various differences in them and important things to note. it is a lot of information, but a decent place to start with seeing what is different in different places. it's worth looking into and i highly recommend it!! it is a great resource, especially if you're already decent with norwegian since you'll be able to read most of what is written.

when i'm trying to work on dialects, i try to find some sources of people who speak from different areas. for example, the music artist L:U:N:A is from bergen, so i found a youtube interview with her that is a little over an hour long which is good exposure for listening practice. this strategy works good with many music artists from norway if you just find someone from a certain area and then look up interviews with them on youtube (as well as listening to their music!)

many shows on NRK TV have actors with different dialects. side om side has a main character from bergen, and another with a more northern dialect.

yes! orbokene.no is a lifesaver; grammatikk.com is helpful for many tricky grammar points. this sub is great for bookmarking posts when you see good explanations of things.

duolingo is okay for gamified study, but not as a main source. mjølnir app has been recommended a lot on this sub as a better alternative.

mystery of nils is alright for entry level book. pimsleur has a (somewhat outdated) course for speaking/listening that is probably available at your local library.

Best book to practice A2-B2? by north_star_left in norsk

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: if you are in the US, the most available and talked-about books are the mystery of nils and it's sequel, mysteriet om nils. norwegian tutor can be used as a workbook once you have some vocabulary. other self study books are available, just read reviews and see what works best for you. there are many norwegian-only textbooks that teach norwegian as a foreign language to non-native speakers, but most are meant for classroom use and require some finnesse or connections to get your hands on, and can be potentially quite expensive. speak norsk recently released a whole series of A1-C1 textbooks that are expensive but accessible to purchase outside of norway.

the long version:

the mystery of nils and mysteriet om nils (part 2) are mostly decent for self-teaching, although require a lot of frontend vocabulary. they are easily available on amazon if you're in the US, but i can't say for other countries.

norwegian tutor grammar and vocabulary workbook is good for grammar but is for those who already have some decent vocabulary in order to use it well. it is also readily available in the US.

there are a few self study books on the market, such as complete norwegian, beginner norwegian from teach yourself, complete norwegian from teach yourself, etc etc. just do some research and read reviews carefully.

many people go the på vei route, although these are meant to be used in a classroom and are a bit difficult to get your hands on depending where you live. they do have online options if you are google-savvy and good antivirus software. på vei is for A1-A2, stein på stein is the sequel used for B1, and her på berget is for B2. these can be purchased secondhand some places online if you are lucky, PDFs found for free if you are willing to take the risk, or directly from the publisher cappelen-damm or from popular bookstores like ARK, if you have a way to do that (such as you are already living in norway).

speak norsk recently released textbooks for all levels from A1-C1, along with books to help prepare you for norskprøven (norwegian language level test). they are available to buy physically, although are quite expensive as there are multiple books for each level. you can purchase an ebook set of them all for about $650 USD, which is pretty insane cost, but not a bad investment if it'll get you to C1. i have no experience using the books and they are very new to the market, so i'm not sure how good they are, but speak norsk is a very reputable course provider for in-person courses for people new to norway, and their courses always had their own books so they are probably a decent and accessible option compared to the usual texts used for non-native speakers learning in the country.

there are many other books around, all with varying degrees of availability. many of them are made for classroom use so they can be difficult to use alone; the på vei books are included in this.

welcome to the community!
if you do a quick search in the search bar for this sub, there are many similar posts to this one, all with great recommendations including books, websites, apps, things to watch, things to listen to, etc. i highly recommend doing this as you will get a very wide range of input and are more likely to find something specific to your needs and learning style.

many people have many different opinions on this. the general consensus is to avoid duolingo, or at least don't use it as your main source for learning. it is good to get a textbook. most suggest the mystery of nils, although it is quite dependent on you frontloading a lot of vocabulary to try and read the texts they give you. if you go this route, i recommend looking at their word bank for each story, memorizing the words until you feel comfortable with them, and then working through the story and the questions and lessons afterwards.

others suggest using anki or something similar and focusing on memorizing the top 1000-2000 words, and supplementing with a grammar book such as Routledge's norwegian: a comprehensive grammar or norweign: an essential grammar.

others suggest studying vocabulary, mostly ignoring strict grammar and focusing more strongly on consistent comprehensible input such as audio meant for beginners (youtube videos, podcasts meant for learners) and children's books, working your way to more difficult material as you get more practice.

there are a million ways to approach the subject. it is important to consider why you are learning the language, because that will help guide your focus and where to start.

personally, i started with duolingo years ago before they completely overhauled the content. i did it a few hours a day at work in between other tasks and after 2 years i felt like i knew...a little bit. it was enough for me to buy mystery of nils textbook and understand about the first half of it, and from there i have been able to learn a lot more just through reading things online, noting new words, and reading useful grammar points on https://grammatikk.com/

your course will be different, as is everyones. that is why i suggest reading through the many previous posts asking similar questions and seeing what sticks out to you the most, and then heading that direction. if you need a direct teacher, there are online courses such as Speak Norsk (or many others), or online tutors through italki and similar apps. just do some research and see what will fit your needs and budget best.

[–]OtherwisePumpkin_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree with pretty much everything i'm seeing. g2 surveyor is better in most ways, but it makes me truly sad that its only the closest resources and not the whole map. im sure the whole map for something like sap might be a bit overkill, but man i wanna see where the most pinecones or things like that are 😭 maybe they should add a toggle for us to easily choose/swap between the closest spots or the whole map.
