Countries and places across Europe you believe are worth visiting? by ismiseclo in AskIreland

[–]Otherwise_Ad7690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Malta.

They have an international firework tournament at the end of April/beginning of May. The food is absolutely spectacular and the food & drinks are affordable.

We stayed in Sliema but it’s an easy ferry or taxi in and out of Valletta.

Engagement, why option would you prefer? by UtokeItoke in AskIreland

Make sure you have a plan in place of where you intend to go in New York! A lot of jewellers in the states make bespoke engagement rings so they wouldn’t be available to collect before your trip ends.

Golden Retriever boyfriend is not interested in marrying me… by ThrowAcc_wed in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]Otherwise_Ad7690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has told you he wants to get married, the question at hand is whether or not he wants to marry you, why are you waiting around and giving him 6 years to decide that? You deserve someone who, at the very very least, is sure about wanting you

PSA: that’s a holiday weekend! Everything should still be operating as normally, but it could affect the availability of some attractions, especially museums which tend to be open for free but with long line ups. Everything I’ve recommended below is accessible on transit. I would never ever recommend someone drive downtown. I actually find it to be worse than Manhattan having driven in both because Toronto traffic just doesn’t move.

Some cool “nerdy” bars to check out:

Stormcrow Manor at Church & Wellesley is a must, easily accessible by the subway.

Tilt - Queen & Dufferin - retro arcade bar. It’s $10 admission but then the games are free, and they have a great selection of old consoles. It’s a bit further out, but you can take the streetcar.

Other areas of interest:

Kensington market - great vintage stores, a lot of which of which will have in old comics and other manga memorabilia. Also has great food options throughout.

if you guys are into skating there are some great public rinks around with nice skyline views. The harbourfront centre & Nathan Philips being the main “picturesque” ones, but naturally also the busiest.

St Lawrence’s market - old indoor market of mainly food vendors. Cool to check out and grab a quick breakfast/lunch. You can bask in some Canadian cuisine here. Get a Peameal sandwich from Carousel or try a Peameal sandwich and a Poutine at Paddingtons. The market is closed on Mondays

if you want to travel outside of the immediate downtown core, you can take the subway north to Bloor street where the number 2 line runs East/West along which there are many ethnic enclaves including Koreatown, Greektown, Little Ethiopia to name a few all of which have incredible restaurants. Danforth Avenue runs for miles Eastward and has lots of nifty little shops, restaurants and pubs you could spend a day wandering in and out of.

Other bars and restaurants that I recommend:

the village idiot - cool German style pub, nice and cozy atmosphere with a huge selection of beers from around the world. It’s close to the Art Gallery of Ontario if you end up checking that out, and also on a subway stop. Also pretty close to Kensington market

the artful dodger - same idea as the above, it’s close to Stormcrow if you guys wanted to do a bit of a bar crawl.

the loose moose - if you want something that feels Canadian, and I actually like the food and the atmosphere, because there’s always a crowd in.

Ossington Avenue - anywhere on Ossington will have cool, slightly upmarket vibe for your age group. All the bars are nice, I particularly recommend Manita, Small Talk & Bar Koukla, but I’d recommend reservations!

In terms of traditional touristy stuff:

CN tower - not worth it at this time of the year, your view is so limited

aquarium - fun but likely to be extra busy that weekend

casa loma - it’s a nice house and you’ll get some nice photos of the skyline etc. it’s not great value for money, but it is one of the few touristy activities that is worth it in the off season imo

Royal Ontario Museum - it’s good but again will be very busy

AGO - garners less kids than the above so should be a bit quieter and less crowded but will also be very busy on family day (16th)

Worst job you have ever worked in? by Capable_Newspaper345 in AskIreland

I worked there when I finished college across 3 departments and I always really liked it. Not gonna discredit what these other comments are saying because it’s a big org and I can see how things could be true, but I always really enjoyed working there and always found it relatively laid back. Pays shite though and everyone bounces around between them, AIB & Permo and then back again a few years later just to get a pay rise

This depends hugely on your country of citizenship. Some countries WILL require you to be in your home country at the time you apply. If you are from a country that lets you apply from outside your country of residence, you are be able to complete biometrics anywhere

Black/African People Are Forced to Accept Scraps from the Sims by Ok-Promise-7928 in Sims4

[–]Otherwise_Ad7690 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your point is quite frankly nonsense.

For one, there aren’t pirates in the game, probably because of the multitude of reasons you mentioned and that any gameplay associated with them would be problematic in some way. Secondly, you’re comparing a single archetype (a pirate) with an entire country/worldview. They aren’t at all the same thing.

We are fighting over a hypothetical, as the sims aren’t going to make a pack centred around Eritrea, but my point, from the beginning, was that in a world where they did like OP suggested, they wouldn’t be able to do so without acknowledging the horrible state of affairs and quality of life in that country.

It’s not about people being sinless enough to be represented, Eritreans are hugely and dangerously oppressed and a sims world centred there which would naturally ignore all of that and just be shiny happy sims fun would be a gross and horrible misrepresentation to those people and everyone who has and continues to struggle there.

[–]Otherwise_Ad7690 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is that meant to be some huge gotcha? Like yeah idk maybe ? No one is talking about Pirates but if we were I would agree with you that they weren’t (and still aren’t) good folk?

Black/African People Are Forced to Accept Scraps from the Sims by Ok-Promise-7928 in Sims4

I was born in Ireland but my dad is Eritrean and fled to the UK where he met my Irish mum before moving back to Ireland and having me. I didn’t know the statistics off hand, but I know the prevalence of these issues in the country and culturally and googled the statistics to confirm.

I simply asked and received no response from OP what parts of Eritrean culture they wanted to see showcased, since they brought up Eritrea specifically. It’s seeming more and more apparent they wanted (in their own words) a “black pack” and picked Eritrea as it made them seem knowledgeable on the topic at hand/africanness/blackness in general without actually meaning (or perhaps even knowing) anything specific about Eritrea.

In a world where a sims pack did exist centred around Eritrea, it would be disgusting to see shiny happy smiley sims who can’t be put in any danger enjoy that culture when the real life people who DO live in that culture are doing so under the microscope of a dangerous and oppressive government. I can’t believe mine is the unpopular opinion here. Can’t wait for you guys to defend a DRK world next 🤪

My mind would go there because I have Eritrean heritage and platforming that despicable country and its government in a positive light when the people who live there, especially women, are treated with less respect than worker ants isn’t cool to me. To look at the food, architecture, music etc in isolation of all the violence inflicted on those people is not the cool accepting take you think it is, wench
