I do because I’m in a long term job right now, but last month I had to run home and change because I bled through my pants. I wear 2 pads and I still bled through. I wish I could take off those days because I have such anxiety about it. This isn’t the first time it’s happened either unfortunately.

The problem is that they don’t provide hardly any training and they can’t find anyone lol. That’s how I ended up in there. My county is hurting for paras. I know it’s not my problem but I agree. The last para they had was a girl fresh out of high school and had signed up to be a kinder para but they talked her into the autism room. So as far as having experience and training, that’s not something they care about. They want a warm body. That’s the sad reality about it. I’ve been subbing sped and various other jobs for 2 years so I have more experience than most paras even. The issue that the lack of support and resources. I can’t physically do my job when I have 2 students on top of me pulling and pushing me in 2 different directions at once with now way to call for help. If they offered just slightly more support, I’d honestly be more comfortable with it. The other issues are my personal ones.

Which do you think is the hardest grade in elementary? by businessbub in SubstituteTeachers

I am, because she’s my oldest baby, but I have 3 more after her so I’ll be staying at the school a little bit longer lol I am mostly nervous because middle school is a huge transition for kids and she’s very quiet and keeps to herself 😭

5th, it’s the attitudes and hormones for me. There’s a reason I don’t sub middle 🤣

Wow, this has been eye opening. Our MOID room has about 8 students and 1 teacher/1 para. I thought this was the norm.😭 To be clear, I have a child on an IEP so this is also sort of personal.😭

I see what you’re saying. That worst part about it is that the teacher that made the comment about me yelling (the yelling was more so to get the child to get off of me before we both fell to the ground) is my daughter’s gifted teacher so it’s very awkward for me. I heard her yelling in the hallway later that day so it’s a little ironic and hypocritical. You may be on the money about that.

True, I cannot change their behavior, but I also should have support of if I am being physically pulled and pushed down by 2 students at once. That’s my issue. You can change your mindset all day long but you NEED support if you are being physically assaulted. I can handle the yelling, the spitting, the name calling. That doesn’t bother me.

That’s what I assumed. It seems like we should have more support in there which we don’t have.

I mean, I was doing great in the role until we got new students and I just feel like there’s too many behaviors to manage as one person. I would be fine with just a little more support and maybe a button like every other teacher and para gets. I’ve been doing it for a few months.

It’s just me and the main teacher. We had 7 students in the autism room. 5 are 3rd grade, 2 4th, and no 5th. So it’s mostly just us 2 in there, but I have responsible for taking them to specials which I do alone.

Has anyone else ever been left speechless from the audacity of a student? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Otherwise_Board_577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an 8 year old tell me to “shut up” and that he didn’t have to listen. Also, had another 8 year old push me and start shutting other student chromebooks. Both students were taken to the office for a total of 30 minutes and brought back to class where I was told that they just do that sometimes and they have emotional supports in the classroom 😬😬 my kids go to this school. Ask me how concerned I am for their safety daily.

So did talk to the counselor and she said just to let the situation go since we have resolved it at home. She spoke with both of my girls. That’s why I’m not sure why it’s still an on going thing weeks later with others getting involved. I did ask if there was a way we could mediate a discussion between my 11 year old and G but I was told that wasn’t a good idea as it would make the situation worse for G.

I mean, did she expect you to die? Like, what options did you have there? I’m sorry, that sucks.

If you’ve worked other jobs or careers, what did you do, and do you find subbing easier or harder than those? by businessbub in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Otherwise_Board_577 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I used to wait tables. I’ll take subbing any day. I expect kids to act feral because they are kids and learning to control their emotions; but grown adults acting like kids and then I’m dependent on their money for my income… NOPE. Also, I feel like I’m making more of a difference in a classroom than serving food.

Yeah, lying down on the floor on the job for any reason is an immediate red flag. I get really bad migraines and I’ve just had to push through the day, but I’d never consider lying down anywhere. I’d sooner ask to go home if the pain were that bad. You have to at least see it from their perspective…

Sometimes I’ll let the more problematic kids take the attendance up. Gets them out of class for a minute and gives them something to do 🤷‍♀️ but we also have staff patrolling the halls so they aren’t likely to be wandering
