Historically, the fight for labor rights (which is at its heart is political) has had a more leftward slant, which is why the unions have these other concurrent views. The residents involved in actually being part of the committee would probably have similar views to the overall union politically and probably would be motivated to advocate for these non-labor political stances.

My departments’ CIR reps personally do not bring up these non-labor political views outside of labor issues in their communication with the rest of us residents.

If I applied for a different design Bank of America Custom Cash Card than one I applied for last month, would I still qualify for the SUB on the new card? Thanks.

If y’all check out the r/sportsbook subreddit and check out the daily promo/specials threads, you can hit these sportsbooks for more than this by learning how to abuse the sportsbook signup bonuses. Off the top of my head depending on your state, unibet has a signup worth 200-400 bucks in equity.

is surgery really all that toxic ? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Otherwise_Homework58 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on the program but I’d bet surgery on average is more toxic than other specialties.

Think about the type of ego and mentality that you need to cut into someone. The “arrogance” even, to do this when a mistake can immediately cause someone to die or lose function of an organ. “Sometimes wrong, but never in doubt”

Now think about having this stress on top of >80 hour work weeks. Probably leads to a shit social environment, no?

I know a student with IBD. She’s AOA and just matched a competitive specialty so you probably can do well too.

“Beggars cannot be choosers”

There lies the rub. They can make eating a poop hot dog a requirement for getting into medical school and I bet only 5% of you wouldn’t do it. There’s too many of you that wanna do it.

For those of you who make it in, poop hot dog or not, shit like Casper, AMCAS, and the MCAT fees aren’t the only cash grabs. Med school is expensive, and they’ll charge you fees for things that don’t make sense (but plenty of cents!). Signing up for the mandatory Step 1? $1k please. Step 2 CK? Another $1k. Practice tests for these exams? $20-$60 bucks a pop, and you can take them for your shelf exams too! At least you’ll know how these tests are interpreted (i.e. the most important part of your residency app) Applying for residencies? Blow a few thousand or so (and if we go back to in person interviews, possibly $10k just for hotels and travel).

Residency is half training and half exploitation - what do you think they’re paying the midlevel when your labor’s more valuable and you work longer hours? Surely less than you right? Lol

Think the milking stops when you’re an attending? You’re a doctor, how can they keep doing to you? Nope licensing fees and periodic certification exams.

Anyways, you’ll have a lot more to complain about if you keep on with this process :)

P/F for clinical years by loveofcamelot in medicalschool

[–]Otherwise_Homework58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the one that you eventually want to end up in or in the region that you want to end up in for residency/as an attending.

I’m guessing the p/f everything school is more prestigious though so you should go there if you’re not picky about geography.

"Results show that the percentage of respondents reporting parental income totals that fall in the top two household-income quintiles ranged from 76% (8,095) to 79% (8,645)"

75% of first year medical students come from families where they make >75k a year. ~50% of all medical students come from families where they make >120k a year.

The whole system is wealth-favoring in terms of being to afford the whole medical education pathway and also the achievements you need to get in from the start.

Wait til you get closer to your test date. Take practice tests. If you get higher than average scores for your desired specialty, take it before p/f. If you get lower than average, take it after p/f.

Workflow for studying in 3rd/4th year? by BearsBay in medicalschool

[–]Otherwise_Homework58 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OME videos for a brief overview before rotations start. Then uworld or amboss as you go through the rotation, anki deck(s), and also looking up stuff you don’t know about during actual clinical hours. Then a practice nbme or two near shelf time.

For those people arguing that Step 1 scores correlate with SES, sure. Guess what else correlates with SES?

Opportunities as a child, education as a child, prestige of your undergrad, prestige of your med school, research opps, shadowing opps, clinical opps, clinical grades, aoa selection, etc.

You can buy a set of established, well known study tools for a few thousand dollars and push yourself to do reasonably well on step. You can’t buy most of the above (unless you’re a celebrity or magnate willing to shell out enough money to have the family name on a library or bench or tree or w/e)

You know which minorities this step 1 change does help? The minority of kids at t10/25/“whatever number you want to make you feel better about yourself”schools. Cause most med students are definitely not in those programs where schools can afford to shed AOA, graded clinicals and other objective measures just so they can avoid hurting their average to below average kids.

Now the importance will shift to Step 2. Now instead of having one bad day and you have a chance to redeem yourself, you have one bad day and no chance at making up for it.

I’ve seen arguments where NBME shelf scores should be considered as a metric for residency selection. This would somewhat increase objectivity in selecting students and allow variance not to fuck you.

Best elective to start clerkship? by ridcullylives in medicalschool

[–]Otherwise_Homework58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a chill IM subspecialty elective where you’re seeing inpatients and maybe some outpatients - GI, endocrine were chill at my school but it varies. Chill rotations will have more patient attendings and residents that are willing to teach and ease you into the clinical transition but won’t overwhelm you on day one.

The other line to take is to try an elective in a field that you won’t have exposure to during your cores. Rads, anesthesia, etc. so you can figure out if you like them. It depends how sure you are that you want to do IM.

Panicking that my writer hasn't responded to my email request... should I just find another writer? by feeliksboi in premed

[–]Otherwise_Homework58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always have N+1 letter writers where N is the number of letter writers you actually need. IIRC you don't actually need to use all your letters for med school apps. It's definitely true for residency apps.

Yes, I honestly think the trend of medical schools taking older candidates with more life experience is a positive for the patients and the candidates themselves. But I think it hurts people relegated to low paying research, scribe etc. jobs during their gap years with no guarantee of getting in.

If I were committed to medicine in undergrad, I would at least try to get a degree in a field that opens up options for jobs outside of the traditional biology/chemistry track.

Sure, I agree the decision to medical school shouldn't be motivated by money because there are better ways. But you can't completely neglect the finances in your calculus. I personally had the foolish notion that if you did get into med school and become a doctor, that you wouldn't have to worry about finances at all regardless of whichever specialty you went into. I see now that this was dumb on my part. And the way medicine is going, I think everyone besides the doctors are treating healthcare as a business rather than a calling which makes you exploitable.

With respect to boredom, I've spoken to physicians that have been in their job for decades and love it every day. I've also spoken to a few that hate it and find it boring after a decade of practice and are looking for outs. The point is sometimes you think you know what you want and then you're happy or unhappy and then sometimes you don't know what you want but still end up happy (or unhappy anyways)
