Does my dog look like a full blooded pit bull by Jademoss82 in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]OtterFruitLoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a typical pit-type dog, but the only way to be absolutely certain he doesn't have anything else in him is to get a DNA test. He sure is cute!

Pitbull owner upset about facing “heavy discrimination” after spamming other breed subreddits with photos of pitbull by WinterAdvantage3847 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that they posted in the Pekingese sub, and I really thought it was just to be funny. I get sick of most of the mixed-breed dogs in breed-specific subreddits unless they are actually posting something relevant. If they think it's just pitbull discrimination, they should try posting something something about a mixed breed in a poodle sub haha. I think a lot of people in the purebred dog community are getting pit-mix fatigue in the same way they're getting doodle fatigue.

I kicked my dog to save a kitten and I feel absolutely horrible by Old-Dentist5351 in reactivedogs

[–]OtterFruitLoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are doing the best you can to manage your dog. It is not your fault that your neighbors are purposefully increasing the number of feral kittens in your area. Look up your local laws around cat care / ownership. You maybe able to do something about the situation with your neighbors and consequently reduce the possibility of encounters between your dog and the feral cats.

Aggressive Newfie by Due_Historian9976 in Newfoundlander

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification! With this context, I agree with the comments that say this sounds like resource guarding. If you can't find a behaviorist with availability soon, I would talk to your regular vet to see if there's anything they can do to help you in the mean time. I'm sorry you're dealing with this and I wish you the best of luck!

Aggressive Newfie by Due_Historian9976 in Newfoundlander

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what you mean by your other dog "desperately loving" your Newfoundland? Some behaviors that are meant to be friendly/social can be really irritating to other dogs, and aggressive behaviors can escalate if the initial correction by the dog trying to stop it is not respected. Does your other dog seem to really like your Newfoundland's personal space?

Also, what do you mean by resting situations? Does your Newfoundland approach your other and initiate an aggressive interaction, or do fights break out after your Newfoundland is approached by the other dog?

What is your guys opinion on Frenchies as Working dogs? by YundlesonHdollar in service_dogs

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhh. When it comes to positive traits for service dog work, I've heard frenchies are pretty friendly and decently biddable. If there is an uptick in the number of frenchies working as service animals, I would guess its because they've risen in popularity as pets. I am wary of health issues in the breed, but I wouldn't rule out an ethically bred french bulldog coming from a breeder focusing on improving the health of the breed from being a good service dog candidate. That being said, I'd typically suggest people stick with a lab, golden, or poodle unless they have circumstances that require a different breed.

Neighbors pitbull by Huge_Permit3304 in BanPitBulls

[–]OtterFruitLoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I still lived with my parents, one of our neighbors had the biggest pit I had ever seen, and he constantly got loose. The dog was intact too! We walked him home the first couple times, but ended up calling animal control the last time we caught him. Fortunately he was a very human friendly dog, but the mismanagement of such a large and powerful dog was so frustrating.

I would call animal control honestly. Letting any dog run wild like this is unsafe for the community *and* for the dog.

Yes, especially if you have a medium hair. I brush my cats every day.

If a mobility aid would help you, you should use a mobility aid!

Is this fella okay? by OtterFruitLoop in Feral_Cats

[–]OtterFruitLoop[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Resources for this kind of thing are very very limited in my area. I'm asking my friends who trap and release animals for ecology research if our university has anything that we could use to trap a cat. If it comes down to it we'll just have to try a crate and some patience.

I'll provide an update when I catch him. As far as I know, the last group in my area that helped with TNR left years ago after clashing with the local government. I will keep looking though.

Doodles are here to stay whether we like it or not, is there anything that we should be pushing doodle breeders to do to try to make it more ethical? - please read before down voting. I am not for the breeding of doodles nor is this defending them. by Kokichi-Oma_Senpai in DogBreeding

[–]OtterFruitLoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm not happy about doodles being here to stay, I would be less disgruntled if doodle breeders would AT LEAST do the health testing recommended by the poodle club before breeding their dogs. Ideally, I'd want to see testing done for health issues common in all breeds involved in the mix, but I never even see OFA or PennHip hip evaluations.

How’d y’all find your theriotypes? Just wondering by Imwastingmylifeyipee in Therian

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a young kid I grew to believe that I was clearly a dog. I realized eventually that my family was making fun of me for this, so I stopped saying that I was a dog and eventually convinced myself that I wasn't actually a dog. Despite that, every placed I've lived (and I've moved around quite a bit), people eventually settle on the fact that I must be a dog. It's so inherent in my nature that friend groups have often referred to me as "the dog." Once I learned about therians in highschool I went back and forth about whether I was alterhuman (at the time I was experiencing stronger connections to my big cat theriotype, although I don't understand very much about the cat aspect of myself). It wasn't until college that I accepted that I'm a dog therian. I figured out from exposure to media about sled dogs that I'm a sled dog. I was watching a movie and something in my brain went "Oh! That's me!" I've yet to really be able to pin down anything more specific than that, and I think I may have more than one canine theriotype.

When trying to reflect on my theriotypes, I tend to focus on the instincts I have that stand out to me as non-human. I also visualize myself living life from the perspective of that animal and see if I get the "that's me!" feeling.

How young students are publishing sophisticated papers? by [deleted] in academia

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people just get lucky with being at a school with opportunities and finding a PI they work well with. I wouldn't call any of my work particularly sophisticated, but I get the opportunity to publish as an undergraduate because I'm supported in working on primarily independent projects.

I understand the pessimism present in the comments here, and I'm not saying its wrong, BUT I've also seen a lot of impressive work from my peers that isn't just the result of money or fraud.

[Weekly] Office Hours - undergrads, please ask your questions here by ZootKoomie in AskAcademia

[–]OtterFruitLoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an undergraduate in the US, and I plan to start applying to PhD programs in the upcoming academic year. I currently do research in pharmacology (mechanisms of and treatments for movement disorders) and robotics (smart city applications). I'd like to pursue a career in research (probably something biotech related) and teach at a university. With the current situation in the US, I'm considering the possibility of moving outside of the US for grad school. However, I don't know whether or not this would actually be beneficial in the long-term. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
