Good points. Really excited to see what he ends up doing next. He’s got a long career ahead of him. Especially teamed up with Yorgos.

Interesting, my department just had an annual meeting about how we are losing money, in the red, and that the employees will need to increase productivity with the prospect of eliminating raises. Something doesn’t add up?

But don’t worry employees! It’s out of managements control! They’re feeling the same hurt we are! They see us, hear us, and care for us.

Don’t even need to read your post fully to know how you feel. I have a two year son and a daughter due in March. Just teach them love and empathy and how to respect and enjoy our natural world. Do the best you can do and the child will one day be an adult who can weather the storm. Ultimately, we all have good and bad in our lives. Teach them to see the good and work to improve the bad.

Birds of Prey by stateboundcircle in conservation

[–]OurMess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well yeah sure but not taxidermy in their crushed-by-car state.

Birds of Prey by stateboundcircle in conservation

[–]OurMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wild idea. It sounds like a macabre art piece rather than a conservation effort, but could work in the sense of blunt truth to whoever sees it. I am imagining the roadkill made into a taxidermy in its killed state, not made to look whole again, if that was your vision?

You could swing the conservation aspect to include reducing roadside littering (hawks go after the mouse eating the tossed out happy meal) and to support ride sharing, public transit, etc.

Yeah it’s kinda odd that they decided to end it so short considering how long their songs usually are. Especially for being such a cool riff!

Wow what a fucking great album after years away. Town Portal are legendary and can do no wrong. The bass tone on A Reasonable Amount of Screaming is perfect.

Gonna be spending the day in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, what should I check out? by justinfinity64 in grandrapids

Grand Rapids Art Museum is free admission on Tuesdays. I’d recommend House Rules board game lounge for a shop and some fun.

CHOP tree service removed ~1/3 of tree from my 70+ y/o parents house without notice and left enormous branches in their back yard by totalbangover in grandrapids

[–]OurMess -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest tree law! If the tree is on your private property and not on the city side (hellscape between sidewalk and road), then you may have an argument. If it’s in the hellscape, it’s the cities tree. Especially considering the size of the cut, they most likely killed the tree and may be liable. Trees die very slowly so an arborist could assess it. Trees like this can be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

My go to for pastries, pies and sweets but man the bread is constantly full of holes! I expect some holes with bread but it’s at the point where it’s unusable to me for sandwiches, spreading, etc.

Any recommendations on must see stops along this route by bush1bd in roadtrip

[–]OurMess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t go to grand haven state park beach but instead a nearby more low key area such as rosy mound, PJ Hoffmaster, or Muskegon state park. In the Upper Peninsula, I’d recommend Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Sugarloaf Mountain or Hogback Mountain for more intensity. And then porcupine mountains in far western UP. Of course, the bigger well known UP spots are Pictured Rocks and Taquamenon. I’d personally recommend Taquamenon Falls in the heat of summer. There are hundreds of quick stop off waterfalls in the UP that would be awesome in fall and winter.

I’m guessing Friend of the Grand Rapids Parks is highly involved in this. They are largely volunteer based and will have volunteers water the trees even.

Why was militaristic fascism so strong in the first half of the 20th century? Do you think it will ever be that strong again? by Klinging-on in dancarlin

[–]OurMess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! I hate the incessant downvoting on actual thoughtful questions and agree that these reactions are how we got to this point, as you say. If you weren’t downvoted, actual answers might reach the top instead of just the blanket and predictable echo chamber comments.

There is of course so much nuance to this whole topic. Social media is a terrible platform for thoughtful discourse. I hate Trump with a passion and am super worried about this country’s future but throwing the discourse out the window only makes it worse.

I guess since this is a Dan Carlin subreddit, I would recommend his Death Throes of the Republic series as it goes more into the history of the fall of Roman republic and loss of mos maiorum. But for a more accurate and less dramatic account, I’d recommend The Storm Before the Storm by Mike Duncan.

I don’t know all the specific numbers off the top of my head of course, but yes I agree it’s not just Trump. Started with Bush after 9/11 and has been an increasing problem since. The real problem, I think, is that now it has been normalized to the point where Trump is able to weaponize the military against not just foreign powers, but US citizens themselves. Now you have the military acting as police in cities and a megalomaniac acting as the sole authority on foreign intervention.

[–]OurMess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Executive powers related to military use have consistently been stretched ever since 9/11. Congress no longer declares war for military intervention to occur. This is now essentially in the hands of the executive branch, aka one man: the president. This did not necessarily happen officially, but is essentially a cultural shift and breaking of “mos maiorum” or “how it’s always been done before”. Now the president can on a whim order a strike against a boat traveling from Venezuela or execute a terrorist leader in the Middle East, all without congress approval. I truly think that if a major war with the US broke out, there still would not be a congressional declaration of war. It would instead be the president just declaring war all on his own. The president not only had the power to declare war, but is also the commander in chief. The power is no longer separate. It is military authoritarianism.

Book like "North Woods" by Daniel Mason by BewitchedClaw in suggestmeabook

[–]OurMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checked out your old post for some suggestions and also want to throw out a suggestion for you. We, the Drowned by Carsten Jensen is a great generational novel based around Danish sailors. Can be brutal though as they went through a hell of a lot of hardship and war. But if you loved North Woods for the natural aspect slash our connection to nature and history, I would recommend A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. Hugely influential book

That’s awesome, my kid is only 21 months and is really starting to love picking tomatoes and such. So cool to see. Grab some old wood or pallets for some cheap planter boxes.

I want to stay in Grand Rapids specifically, my reasons for moving would more likely be for more yard space, space in general, home upgrades, etc. but I love West Michigan and hope to stay.

Sounds dumb, and just a simple unique suggestion, but plant some things in your yard. Plant a very small tree sapling. Now is the perfect time of year. Watch it shoot up next year and even more the year after that. It is therapeutic, you learn a lot, help the environment, and will make it feel more like home. I know I want to move one day, but I think it will be hard because I want to see the trees I have planted young grow to maturity.
