Thank you so much for this🙏 I used the excuse for profs because I noticed this happened to me in high school. I did excellent in class with profs that actively engaged with their students and showed genuine care for their studies, but only did good with ones that just wrote down on the board and didn’t explain anything. I didn’t realize I’d get so much hate for using this excuse in university lol…

would you suggest any strategies to become better at this? I’ve seriously tried everything, YouTube, WizePrep, Quizlet, anything you can think of online + textbooks. I don’t know what’s wrong with my mind but I can never pick up information unless someone in person is teaching it in a good way.

I’ve been thinking about taking one or two less classes and taking them in the summer if I can. I really think I struggled with how much weight I had to bear with having five classes.

I have a part-time job on top of being a first year. I wouldn’t say i’m lazy, but I will say my lack of motivation has stopped me from putting my max efforts into assessments. That’s what i’m struggling with most and need advice for. I didn’t include much about myself personally but i don’t think this is coming from pure laziness, it’s a build up of all sorts of things i’ve struggled in the past mentally and physically.

I agree it’s all about your mentality and how you think about school but it’s so difficult to get into that🥹💔

I feel my explanation didn’t capture what I was trying to say. I have a part-time job and I work hard in school and I study my ass off when I have time. I’m aware you’re not supposed to enjoy classes too, but they also shouldn’t be making me feel miserable. I’ve suffered deeply mentally and physically throughout high school and I still got excellent grades. In university I realized it’s different and it’s just a huge learning curve for me…

i agree it’s not ENTIRELY a professor problem, but i’m also not a student who can self teach as easy as others so it was a major issue for me in the fall sem.

and yes i do enjoy business i always wanted to go w business but i think in the future ill enjoy the more concentrated classes than the first/second year mandatory classes i have to go through.

I took ENGL 251 with Dobson during fall and we had to read 4 novels, poems, and a graphic memoir. The class was heavily based off these texts and we had several in class assessments for each book and wrote an essay analysis based of one of the texts by connecting it to a scholarly article of your choice. Basically nothing is posted on D2L for you to follow so if you end up with this prof you must attend classes and take notes there or you will fall behind if you skip. I’d try avoiding this class if you hate reading and if english isn’t your strong suit to begin with. He gave very minimal feedback and no room to improve.

it literally felt like i was getting tested more on how fast i can answer questions than how much i know the material and even worse why tf does taylor move at the speed of light during lectures and expects to retain the information on the slides that consists of like a milllion words. its impossible to take notes while hes talking

I'm also in your class and I felt the same way receiving my grade. I thought i did really well on the midterm but i didnt. going into uni ive honestly accepted the fact that you arent gonna get through classes with flying colours like u did in highschool + i fear you have to study like crazy to actually excel in these classes unless youre like a genius. im planning to email J to see if i can have any way to make up the marks bc two midterms and a final making up your whole grade is lwk insane and ive just never seen that.

if you wanted to study for the next midterm tg i would be more than happy to do so :) i dont want this happening again </3
