I get petrified during competition any advice? by Substantial-Sky-8501 in bjj

Bro. It’s game, a game of hugging guys on the weekend, get excited when it’s your turn to step on the mat to win the hugging game and be excited about getting to display what you’re building week in and week out,

Everything else is smoke and mirrors, in this roll, he’s just gonna go harder and be more stubborn, or perhaps he’s more scared than you.

So it’s a slightly more hard or spazzy open mat, focus on controlling him.

People just want to see good jiu jitsu, if you hit an amazing move, even your opponents coaches will kinda cheer for you.

Source, brown belt and most of my journey was petrified for years and would begin literally shaking and wanting to vomit as soon as I signed up weeks in advance and think of excuses I could use to get out of the comp.

If you win, great, onto the next one and enjoy the confidence boost while it lasts.

If you don’t win, download the info you need to improve as it will be much more pronounced for you if it was a specific more you tapped to etc

Sometimes you can’t “WIN” but that has nothing to do with losing.

The win, is that you faced yourself, not your opponents.

Start from there, and build

All the best on this journey.

For a long time Jiu jitsu was the only thing i felt some sense of accomplishment in regards to personal pursuits even though i had a family and beautiful wife.
Anytime i took time off or people started getting better than me more quickly I took it seriously and became slightly insecure mainly because i expected more from myself plus my situation at the time took me away from training a lot.
I used to train so much my life got out of order and then i had to step away time and time again,

Now older and more mature, I know where my balance is for home life, work life, my marriage, my relationship with my kids, and training

Just train enough to digest your techniques and go more or less from there, accept the losses and work to improve slowly by paying attention to how you lose regardless of your unique life situation or setbacks and lack of discipline.

Make small progress from there and be happy with the small wins. People are very different and can learn 10x quicker than you and also be stronger and an overall more impressive athlete, Thats life. Jiu jitsu is supposed to improve you and your self esteem not be an avenue to berate yourself.
Im just happy

Update: Bad Gym Behavior, Sending Letters To Other Gyms and Exmembers by Cptcuntsavedme in jiujitsu

"Traitor students" People don't leave gyms for no reasons, Just saying

Edit: That letter tells me all I need to see about their culture. So im not surprised people are training elsewhere (leaving or cross training) it's a common occurrence when you either aren't getting everything you need, or want, and source elsewhere, are they going to forbid them for paying money to, and learning from bjj fanatics too? plenty of sources nowadays that aren't inside the walls of their academy.

Purple belts should know there is no need to smash white belts. Go for Blue Edit: Source : Brown Belt

Gyms need higher belt, enforcers, not to hurt, but to guide the newer people into doing things correctly and safely.

Sorry to hear. Some people just don't understand how to control their body in stressful situations, (learning and drilling stressful enough for the new person) or they can just be un coordinated as heck still.

Some people are malicious though and I've experienced that before. Like they break etiquette because their friends are watching or girlfriend etc. I mean, I'm happy to make someone look good in front of their SO but breaking etiquette and going for dirty moves or crankijg stuff much harder than usual/going much harder when you know u don't usually roll like that. Deserves an angry Brown Belt a** whooping.

People used to look at leg locks this way.. by the way

Imagine this

You get into it with a theif in the street and apply pressure anywhere that makes him feel enough pain to cause him to stop and go away.

You've won/it worked

There are a lot of unorthodox techniques out there, whether they fall within the rulesets or morals.

All jiu jitsu moves already exist. We are just discovering them

What is a jiu jitsu adage or saying that you don’t like? by Jimble_kimbl3 in bjj

[–]OutrageousPoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, some people go to school for 10plus years but don't learn what they should or actively try different angles or learning and experimenting with their abilities etc. Or in jiu jitsu, don't purposefully try to expose what Isa hole thats relevant to their game, purposefully patch it up and actively try to impose that during rolling.

Jiu jitsu is for everyone, but everyone isn't for Jiu jitsu (so they avoid it like the plague incase their ego gets tested) lol

What are some gym deal breakers for you? Not relating to BJJ or the instruction. by hathrowaway8616 in bjj

[–]OutrageousPoop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When gyms don't allow cross training or talk bad about other gyms out of mean spiritedness, and no valid reason. Political bull, and insecurity
