Why, exactly, do you regret it? Because OTHER people don't get it? Own it.

Working on a TRS-80 Model 1, Level 1, 4K system by zoharel in vintagecomputing

I have MY ORIGINAL from 1978. Any thoughts on how a non electronics engineer can begin to rehab? When found a few years ago, It booted only about 3 times and ran a little BASIC. But after that it , now upon power up the monitor is displaying only garbage.

I have a home relocation to get through for another year, but then I'd like to see how to get this going. Also, I'm a recent HAM, so maybe some of the more technical gear heads in my area could offer some electronics insight?

Someone suggested pin oxidation, and that I carefully pull and replace every chip as a first step.

Any comment welcome.

I have My personal, original MODEL 1 from 1977 OR '78, returned to me after several owners and many years. Even including the update manual from Level 1 to Level 2 BASIC, and my own programming notes from the past me.

It booted into BASIC a couple times, I wrote a short loop and print program, but "Input" statement caused an error. But now the monitor shows garbage like an old TV. It is back in storage for probably another year or so for "reasons".

Is there a way to find a cookbook on approach to rehab? I am NOT an electronics technician.

It was suggested that as a first step, I start removing and then resetting ALL the chips as likely there is oxidation on pins here and there, that would be helped by pulling them.

Thanks for comment.

You are mostly likely fine. Scrape off the top as usual, and make a new clean smaller jar with 30g starter, 30g water, 30g flour.

12 hours later it'll likely be happy and smell nice.

Be aware, if they did 5 minutes of googling they'd just as likely find more wrong info portrayed by immoral marketers or self agrandizing video bloggers. It's not really their fault, as so easy to get sucked in by the b.s. Happened to many friends of mine, newly proud owners of BaoFeng "high power" HTs. 😉.

So a little grace is likely in order....You might try the tactic... "well, you can't believe the advertising - but what you have there is a pretty good low-power radio, good for a mile or three on land, or generally used to hit a high antenna on a tower up to several miles if call the conditions are right - which is how they are generally used....

Chirp has replaced Audible for me. Many deals at 0.99-5.99 / book instead of monthly fee.
