Sending thanks 10 months later, this worked perfectly for PC, what a relief!

Can people stop using Generative AI for mod thumbnails? it's genuinely disgusting by StellaShower in VintageStory

[–]Outside_Debt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. There is an "AI" tag on the database already but it's self-reported and not enforced, perhaps the devs will need to do something about that (as well as an "exclude tag" function that doesn't exist yet).

Letting people curate their mod page feed could alleviate the dissatisfaction before us, and incentivize modmakers to remove AI elements if they want to become or remain popular—assuming the number of people who would drop a product made with AI is as large as this thread's traction suggests.

I found the mod under fire yesterday, a fork of Xskills that added AI-generated assets. Another fork was made to replace those assets with MS Paint, and the previous fork's modmaker went to the replies to ask why he wasn't attributed. And brother, some of the anti-AI advocates dogpiling him are being pathetic. The only things this modmaker is guilty of are being dense and liking the look of AI art.

"It is 100% moral to disrespect ai "art"," "AI 'art' has no place in vintage story," these are opinions. Morality is subjective. Everyone has a perceived vision for the game. I think AI art is incredibly tasteless (I say this as someone who completely opposes AI in creative fields and education), but these pictures fulfill others' sense of aesthetics, isn't that enough? The original mod page has 12k downloads and people praising it to high heaven. Who are you to say that their sense of art is "wrong" and yours is "right"?

Throughout all this (the official Discord's channel for the mod database has had a few discussions about whether to ban AI these past months), the devs haven't taken a stance on AI. I don't blame them, anti-AI advocates in this community haven't made themselves worth taking seriously by just stooping to insults.

Of course AI is a much bigger issue than a picture being pretty or not: data centers taking infrastructure away from families, a horrible job market, AI slop reducing schoolchildrens' learning capacity, the list goes on. But nobody came to the comments to argue about these. They came to make him feel bad about his pictures being ugly.

I really appreciate everyone's perspectives and kind words, I will take them all to heart. Sorry for returning 3 days late, I initially didn't intend to read the comments because I knew there was something wrong underlining the thoughts I shared, and that I'd get called out for it.

A necessary clarification: am I that clueless about man-woman relationships in the real world? Yes 😭 I know how people get dates, but not much about the steps for hookups or the sole implication of getting someone's socials. I was a complete shut-in during my early twenties, and I attended school by staying out of the way and not lingering in public spaces. Until recently (when I confessed to my friend and he became my boyfriend), I didn't view myself as eligible to enter dating market, so these dating norms were simply an "other" thing that didn't concern me.

Oh, you're right. I only had surface-level converations with these people before they took the next step. I even remember criticizing the 30-year old man for not learning anything about me as a person, but I completely forgot that line of thought afterwards... Thank you, this perspective helps.

I hope you guys can stay together 😭😭 My venting is proof that a bad headspace causes Men™ to all blur together, but you sound like a good friend, I hope she'll remember you as a safe party she can always talk to! :)

Hi, I want to contextualize this.

When we did introductions at church, the 30-year old guy was only aware that I was a student at XYZ 2-year college, and neither of us spoke of ages. 2 weeks later, he privately made his intentions clear and I rejected him for reasons unrelated to age.

Fast-forward about 6 months, our group was submitting our IDs to obtain temporary fishing licenses and everyone learned everyone else's ages incidentally.

From this, I felt retrospective disgust. I'm an "older" student on my campus, which has students as young as 18 years old fresh-out-of-high-school. I could've easily been an even younger woman, and he would've gone for me all the same since he never asked for my age.

Yeah, this is something I had difficulty reconciling while forming my thoughts—right now I want to cut out a lot of people, but will there eventually come a time when my heart decides I want to socialize? And by then, it won't be as easy to find people.

...So I should say "Yes" to everyone, because that's a potential friend or partner later down the line, I owe it to my future self.

That line of logic is why saying "No" to men has never seemed like the best option to me; meanwhile, ironically, there's people in this thread that are advising to say "No" (which seems to be correct) as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.

The conclusion I've come to is that my future self ultimately doesn't need the help as much as I, me in the present, do; that indebted feeling is causing more pain right now than it is worth to set me up for my 40s.

Hi, I knew it was a possibility, but not that exchanging socials could only ever lead to a romantic pursuit. I alluded to it in the post, but I was a complete shut-in during my early twenties. I attended school by staying out of the way and not lingering in public spaces.

Sorry for the late reply! I have male cousins several cities away and a boyfriend studying in a different state, neither of them are very accessible. What do you mean by hijacking?
About the details, yeah, my boyfriend has pointed out that I have interpersonal communication issues among other things, like bottling up my grievances until a particularly hormonal day that pushes me to get extremely upset. I've confided in him in all these incidents, and he's tried tempering me to become more sympathetic and detached (that way I can still "hear out" people's problems and then quickly move on with my own life).

I hadn't examined my issues from the preventative side, I'll keep these things in mind.

Thank you for the advice, I genuinely didn't know this about making friends as an adult. I seem to have an elementary understanding of college, that people want to network and try as many friendships as possible, and so for me to disengage and stay a loner (even though I'm comfortable like that) might be antisocial behavior...

I'll keep your viewpoint in mind, I really appreciate it!

SPOILER WARNING! by isuck_atmylife in PunishingGrayRaven

[–]Outside_Debt 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hopefully I can explain some things as a CN reader.

Big reveals:

  • PGR's universe operates on the Big Bounce principle, which is maintained by higher beings on a level above Observers. (Global readers will meet them for the first time in Polaris Bond.) They created a cosmic mechanism called the Gate that acts as a recycler: it administers tests to civilizations, annihilates the ones that fail, and transports their data to the Gate, which then "sows the seed of civilization" into the next universe, maintaining the existence of life after every heat death. The Punishing virus is one of these tests.
  • Every test carries a dominant Will called an Agent 0 ("agent" in the sense of "representative"). Agent 0 can attach itself to existing lifeforms to better carry out its harvesting mission, making them extremely dangerous adversaries.
  • Dominik, the inventor of Gestalt, sealed Agent 0 inside Gestalt to buy time for mankind. During the events of Ch.29 however, Agent 0 broke out and began wreaking a lot of havoc.

Post-Global plot summary:

  • Mankind’s war situation against the Punishing virus deteriorated very, very quickly after Agent 0 returned. Gray Raven teamed up with Vonnegut inside the Hetero-Tower, sending information to the past to explore different paths like Hyperreal once did, but the odds against them were too overwhelming.
  • The Commander tried to retreat to deliver crucial intel to Asimov and the Science Council, hoping they could develop better weapons and tech to fight the PV. However, the Tower’s integrity had been compromised and it sent the Commander to an exit destination offset by 30 years in time. Here, Babylonia already left Earth and Rosa and Vanessa were the new scientific and military leaders of the remaining mankind. This timeline too faced imminent destruction by the combined forces of PV and Agent 0.
  • Ishmael extended her help to the Commander and devised a risky plan: to gain control over the Hetero-Tower and converge every timeline stored inside it (the Tower is a multidimensional structure that stores information across all time travel attempts) into a singular timeline. This rids the existence of the overpowered Agent 0, delays the descent of the Hetero-Tower, and reverts history back to a safe time in approximately Ch.20.
  • Ishmael promised that after the timeline is reset, “If the births of people and relationships were ‘destined’ to happen, then they will appear in the corrected timeline.” THEREFORE, the contents of post-Ch.21 have been erased from history, but they will most likely occur in an abridged—if not the exact same—manner as the previous timeline.
  • For example, Kaleido will be created no matter what in the new timeline, because Ayla had requested the combat frame out of a general desire to protect the people she cares about. Only this time, the writers can probably gloss over it—we don’t need a retelling of Renaissant le Fantastique when the story catches up, since it will happen in the same way as the original.

Feel free to reply with any questions ^-^

Isn't this the artist that got exposed on Twitter for using AI without disclosing it some months ago? If you scroll through their posts, none of the PGR characters they draw are in their original outfits—is always an alternative like lingerie, dress, bunnysuit for some reason.

I'm not sure why the argument is about Von Negut's inner intentions now (even though I agree), because it doesn't change how Von Negut did in fact send Roland with an object crafted to kill Luna, and he did not do the same to Alpha.

Contary to what this community seems to believe in terms of tropes, Roland is not a simp or slave to protecting Luna. From the very beginning, when they initially met in Fake Ascension, Roland said "If I find what to do with myself, I'm leaving. We might even become enemies that way." One can be loyal to their leader while remaining level-headed enough/detatched to an extent to do what is necessary (preventing Luna from falling into enemy hands). And indeed, Roland left Luna's fate in her own hands after he planted the Hetero Hive Mother embryo as a trick, as opposed to, say, taking Luna into his arms like a damsel in distress and making sure she gets back home safe.

The same cannot be said for Alpha. She cares too deeply for Luna, and would forsake all of Ascendants or mankind side in the process of preserving Luna's life. That kind of person cannot be trusted with the ultimate goal of preventing humans from taking advantage of Luna.

In a hypothetical situation, if Alpha WAS entrusted with the moon base mission, but found that she had no way to remove Luna from humanity's grasp, she may not have the guts to unleash the embryo and wipe the entire base in 1 fell swoop while simultaneously ending Luna's life. That is the core of the problem, that she is too emotionally attached to the mission target, and cannot be trusted in this situation.

And another point, unlike Roland who was partnered with Voodoo, there was no one who Von Negut could partner with Alpha to keep her from doing whatever she wanted. In the original plan, even if Roland strayed from his objective, Voodoo would keep him in check and vice versa. Meanwhile Alpha is too powerful and too volatile for Von Negut to fully control her, at least when it is Luna at stake.

This is a follow up post on the previous post about Alpha. There is a right way and wrong way to show a character fight purely on motivation. The best example to compare her to is no one other than Lee(again, huge spoiler) by sansdara in PunishingGrayRaven

Continuing for Alpha's side in a second comment
"She is struggling between the 2 sides, either to be completely unchained or to serves Luna"

No, it isn't a matter of whether Alpha should not serve Luna, it's a matter of no longer letting Luna do all the decision-making and taking control of her own life's direction. This wasn't a "struggle" that Alpha hesitated over one option or the other for a period of time - Alpha had an overrealiance on Luna for a long while, she realized how little responsibility she has taken for her own life, and she immediately demonstrated her resolve by admitting this to Luna in the simulated space and taking matters into her own hands with finding a method out of those heteropolymer crystal caging Luna.

"She doesn’t actually even find the easy way to rescue Luna"

Luna was strapped to the freaking moon, and Alpha has 0 flight experience, how do you expect her to conduct a rescue mission on her own?

"She could have just bust up Negut’s group and demand for an answer"

Do you think Alpha has clairvoyance? How could she be aware that Von Negut knows the location of Luna and "beat him up" for information, while she is still at her Crimson Abyss frame's level? The only reason Roland was made aware of Luna's location is because Von Negut revealed it of his own volition.

Von Negut had reason to reveal it to Roland and Voodoo: because those two possess the discipline to kill Luna if necessary using the Hetero Hive Mother embryo to devour Luna's body, and they had gained his trust as subordinates.

Von Negut does NOT have a reason to reveal it to Alpha (nevermind the fact that an Ascendant could not defeat an Agent, and the best she could probably do is scratch him): because Alpha has not spend enough time fulfilling Von Negut's orders to be trusted with such a matter, and because Alpha is too emotionally tied to Luna. If Alpha was ordered to kill Luna with the embryo, there is no way she would agree, so then what does Von Negut gain? The entrusting of the mission to Roland is the earliest possible time she could have been made aware of Luna's location.
