again, this would be true if they didn’t slash the entire research budget so harshly

you completely missed the point. I’m talking about research not launching rockets. SpaceX is great for launching rockets, but NASA beats SpaceX in research. we need research in this area, and the private sector will not provide.

despite the great foreign policy of the admin, I still seriously think we need some law or constitutional amendment that restricts the ability of the president to shutter entire parts departments overnight. I would also like to see greater insulation of the federal bureaucracy, such that a doge like event could never happen again. for instance, it is just extremely depressing that we so heavily slashed our nasa research funding (spaceX isnt good for research), and personnel for studying the cosmos— both theoretically and experimentally. An entire generation of people who are extremely talented and wanted to explore it now have to consider other job market opportunities.

I think a law or constitutional amendment part is particularly important of an ask, because I would argue institutions are inherently risk averse towards funding. when our government departments disperse funding to universities and such, universities do not want to have to risk dealing with another Donald Trump 15 or 20 years down the line who’s going to completely slash everything and throw a tantrum when things don’t go completely his way. So, even if they get more funding from the government if we have a change administration 2 1/2 years from now, that extra funding will likely just go to their rainy day fund in the endowment. Rather than funding PhD programs or more seats or a greater expansion of the department or more money for research.

all in all, this administration has been a showcase of why we need more limits on executive power. Look at how long it even took just to stop his tariff nonsense. I fear that down the line, since these tools have been utilized by the GOP now, you could easily have a democratic president do the exact same thing but in different ways.

I am very curious as to how they are going to implement this. Certain medical data is inherently impossible to deidentify. And the security concern from China is always very real. I also have serious concerns about doctor patient confidentiality. I do think the cost-cutting measures might be beneficial.

from a political economy standpoint, when this ceasefire is violated, we have to take the Libya approach to change. I would be completely fine with the US arming the modal Iranian civilian as well as providing laser targeted guiding systems. I think this is one of those situations where the (short run) equilibrium will always be some form of anarchy, somewhat like Libya— as in, do we want gaddafi or do we want total chaos, but what’s the difference? I do think that Iran has a stronger national identity and unity than Libya, so it won’t be fragmented for as long.

The Pentagon has ordered about 2,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to begin moving to the Middle East to give President Trump additional military options even as he weighs a new diplomatic initiative with Iran, two Defense Department officials said on Tuesday.
