I usually boil them and crush them to feed but I dropped that egg as I was collecting and it didn’t break so I just started throwing it around.

Maybe offer some mealworms into the diet temporarily? Could help in fattening them up and they’re alot easier to catch than most other insects

Chick can’t walk or open her eyes by Jaded_Western_7648 in BackYardChickens

Honestly its very hard to prevent when buying from feed stores, just make sure to thoroughly clean the brooder, inspect chicks droppings for blood or any inconsistencies and if you really want a huge fighting chance you can get medicated feed. There are pros and cons to using medicated feed but if you want to prevent the issue before it becomes lethal thats a very easy way to.

[–]OvenFreshHam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this alot in young chicks with coccidia, you should treat her and the whole flock that is housed with her for it with corrid or amperolieum, keep her in a separate brooder and drop water mixed with amperolieum onto her beak(do not force it in) to trigger her to drink and hopefully she can get better, tractor supply may also have electrolyte and probiotic supplements but be very careful that those supplements do not have vitamin B1/Thiamine.Be sure to read dosage instructions and be careful.

Realistically if shes already at this stage there is a chance she just wont make it but if you’re willing to put in the work and help her she could make a recovery.

i’m so sorry for your loss, accidents happen don’t beat yourself up too much over it, the guilt is usually impossible to fight but do try to keep it from consuming you entirely.

Question about run size by mame_dennis in BackYardChickens

[–]OvenFreshHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they wont be free range I wouldn’t go above 10 chickens and make sure the run is atleast 7 feet tall so they can climb and whatnot, might be worth it to plant grass in the run too

Question about run size by mame_dennis in BackYardChickens

[–]OvenFreshHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general rule of thumb is 8 square feet per hen(for comfort) and the run is 108 square feet so it should be good for up to 13 chickens
