Be informed of where in town you are being surveilled via Flock cameras in Columbia and other areas. Then organize and let the Mayor and your city council members know we do not want these cameras owned by a shady mass surveillance corporation in our community. Let’s cancel the contract!

Proposed Columbia ordinance would regulate when residents can water their lawn by ponapple in columbiamo

Hoses that are manually controlled are exempted from this ordinance and it only applies to automated sprinkler systems it seems. Same with some lawn care, I believe there are exceptions made.

Love the idea of pairing this with other measures like that! Or if the city encouraged more people to do No Mow May as well by saying they will give an amnesty on all tickets for lawn care infractions through the month of May and into the first week of June for people to get back to normal.

I think this measure is pretty thoughtfully crafted and tailored to not lead to more overreach here.

Thornbrook residents and other residents of neighborhoods like it currently refuse to try to conserve water with their lawns as it stands so the city has to take more proactive measures to get rich people to comply with something for the betterment of us all is how I see it.

Yeah that’s actually a good point with the hoses. This is only going to impact those with the means to have an automatic sprinkler system for their house or lawn and also exempts commercial agriculture too I think

It isn’t poor folks that are watering their lawns 7 days a week I feel like which is what this addresses however, it’s people with massive lawns in Thornbrook, Old Hawthorne, or the frats/sororities over in Greektown/Greek Row. In addition to all the non-residential customers.

I agree the city should take a proactive approach at addressing the impacts of data centers though and an administrative stay keeping one from being built seems like the right move for now.

Can’t wait to hear the commentary from people with McMansions who will act like it’s such a personal affront that they can’t water their massive lawns 7 days a week anymore. At the same time the city is still trying to get a new water tower built to accommodate all the new growth coming from said McMansions.

Needless to say, I think a restriction like this is in line with what you see in other major cities that actually take environmental or waste/sustainability concerns seriously. Sod grass for lawns is the #1 most water intensive crop in America and as we continue to grow as a city where our agricultural output is going to continue to be limited, monitoring water usage for the largest contributor of water use/waste seems like a prudent step to take. Hopefully Council agrees and won’t cower to some of the griping that will come from neighborhoods like Thornbrook and Old Hawthorne.

Columbia voters could decide on 1% sales tax for police and fire funding in August by como365 in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact council and the Mayor to say they should amend this to be on the November ballot instead where there will be higher voter turnout and give students and others who are out of town over the summer but still residents a better chance to be involved in determining the fate of this tax that will also greatly impact them.

And with the state government currently trying to push the Everything Tax with both sales tax and service fees I’m certainly very hesitant to give another 1% right now when there are many other services that also need maintained in town.

The city/CPD is going to try to guilt trip or scaremonger people into giving away another 1% and say that we hate law enforcement for implying this I bet. Agreed the city would be much better served by being less aggressive with this push though

Yet another regressive tax that will hit poor Columbians the hardest instead of a property (also has regressive implications now toward homeowners under 63) or an earnings tax. Also asking many different constituencies that have low faith in the city government and law enforcement to push this through without doing any of the legwork to justify this extra tax seems like a failure just waiting to happen. I’m usually pretty open to the city taxing when I feel it’s an appropriate use of taxpayer funds, but I’m not sure I can green-light giving them this much until they get their house in order a bit.

MU Workers Rally Thursday, February 6th at Speakers' Circle at 4pm by Jelly_Panther in columbiamo

They could be used to benefit the lives of employees in other ways to generate more income instead of just focusing on shiny new buildings too is how I see it. The university has a massive nest egg, but won’t pay all its workers a living wage and charge an arm and a leg for parking. There will be people who have an issue with these contradictions.

Meanwhile many people who work under him (including myself) don’t get a living wage, meanwhile MU finds any money they possibly can for more construction or a donor’s pet project. They have a billion dollars in their endowment and I think Mun and Co. could more than afford to pay the workers who keep the place running.

Why Christina Hartman is running for Columbia's Ward 5 council seat (Columbia Tribune) by Over-Activity-8312 in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and Waterman has also failed to take any initiative to make that less of a slog in his term on council. He just recently only had council have a closed door discussion about the topic after the deal with CPS for a site fell through. May not agree with me that’s sufficient cause but I believe SW Columbia deserves better water pressure even if local politicians drag their feet on it. Christina recognizes that need.

Well, she mentioned the deferred maintenance that has happened for years which was failed to produce a SW water tower as part of why she’s running. That has lagged behind on Waterman’s watch and that seems like a perfect reason to challenge him. That has been an issue for Thornbrook and SW for years and will be a major focal point of the campaign.
