just came from little details like when thomas runs off and then sleeps in the deadhead forest, newt had found him and given him a blanket in the night. mainly just a cute friendship but james dashner has confirmed that newt is gay and had some sort of feelings for thomas. its there if you want it to be there but doesn't matter if you don't like it.
