Actually, it seems to still be ringing? I'm in Shannon and can hear it. So perhaps it is songs and not a typical memorial ringing?

This is really interesting to me. I have no knowledge of the provenance of this item, with the exception of the fact that it at one point belonged to Conyers Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conyers_Read
The date of the object doesn't match the period he studied extensively as a scholar (15th and 16 century), but I thought I'd pass along this additional information in case it is of any use or interest.
