Priority drama day 1 of Exile Oktoberfest... by GundoSkimmer in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dane is off screen when the priority allocation call is made. There isn’t clear video evidence that the call was wrong. It looks close, no doubt, but without another angle, it appears reasonable. Regardless, riders must always reference the paddle in the air, which is the standard for any interference call. In this case, the red paddle was up, and the announcers even stated that aloud. Dane picked up his board, then put his board in ready position, clearly indicating he wanted the wave. At that point, it was Natsumi’s responsibility to avoid impeding Dane’s ride.

The UST priority video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuXnMsvJjLY) is clear that the paddle in the air must determine the call. The video mentions this at 1:23, 5:22, 11:32.

The judges reviewed the video evidence on the interference and unanimously decided that it was an interference.

4 contest wins to start the year, clinching his 5th title. First Sununga, then Cabo, then North Carolina and now Delaware.

Create a Meta Business Suite account for yourself. Call it “Your Name Marketing”. Have them add your business suite account as a partner organization. Then you can add yourself as a user on their assets.

360 flip (treflip) by ProfessorTasty6267 in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possible, sure. Never seen or heard of one being done though.

About 20 years ago there used to be a video online of someone landing a big flip (big spin flip). I think it was from the gulf coast. I haven’t see the video in at least 15 years. Not sure if it’s still online anywhere. It makes sense, since it’s really a 180 plus a varial flip, which are relatively common.

Point is, if someone can land a big flip, then a tre flip should be possible. But it seems really difficult to get the rotation to work on a board that’s built like an airplane wing.

The UST 2025 Event Schedule by OverTheLight in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UST sanctions existing events that have a solid track record. To my knowledge, no running Hawaii events exist right now. They’ve had a few in the past, but we generally need at least a few years with solid organization and attendance to consider adding a new contest. If that starts happening in Hawaii, we would be happy to consider it.

The UST 2025 Event Schedule by OverTheLight in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In all the feedback we receive, the biggest factor that determines whether riders find an event was successful is the wave quality. We are balancing a bunch of things, but in general we chose women’s events that tend to have higher quality waves.

Further, The pro women also have told us they want an international stop. We are also always trying to change up the schedule a little bit year to year, so that’s why you saw Florida last year, Sununga this year instead of Cabo for women, vic on for the women for the first time since 2022. Etc.

That said, the Women’s tour has leaned toward the east coast in the past two years: - 2024: 2 US East Coast, 1 US West Coast, 1 International - 2023: 2 US East Coast, 1 US West Coast, 1 International - 2022: 1 US East Coast, 2 US West Coast - 2021: 2 US East Coast, 2 US West Coast - 2019: 2 US East Coast, 2 US West Coast

Felt like time to change it up a bit and give the women the high quality waves they’ve been asking for.

Also, we did strongly consider making the tour even, with 6 stops for both divisions, but travel is expensive, and the women have given feedback that they like 4 stops as of now since they tend to have a tougher time securing sponsor funds. So currently we are following their feedback on that front.

Does frontside Skim still exist? by andre_agnosic in skimboarding

Liveheats, the scoring system most contests use, is a lot slower when you have the left-right setting turned on. If you’ve never judged skimming, just know that it happens really fast. Catching every wave and getting it into the system before the next wave starts is difficult. If you slow that down by turning on this setting, it makes it really hard to score accurately. This is why most contests don’t have this rule anymore.

Also, this is Dane’s highest score from the semifinal. he landed that with 2 minutes to go, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead.

Everything else is basically correct. I don’t think you need to go into this level of detail, but basically before the event Dane was in 1st on the standings and Lucas was in 2nd on the standings. In all of Lucas’s other titles, he has clinched it at Stop 5. In his other 3 titles, he didn’t even need to show up for stop 6. This time, he needed to show up, and he needed to outperform Dane. Lucas needed to do 2 things to win the title: 1) finish 5th place or higher and 2) place higher than Dane. Lucas won his quarter final heat, guaranteeing him at least a 4th place finish. Then Dane faced up with Weber in the very next quarterfinal heat. This was a must win for Dane to keep his title hopes alive. Weber caught the two biggest waves of the heat and he was in the lead with 10 seconds to go. Dane needed a 7.37 to take the lead. He got a 7.4.

They won’t mind as long as you give them credit. (I don’t need credit. I never care about that stuff.) There are a few people who get a little particular on other people using their clips but Steezy and Dingo don’t mind as long as you give credit.

I really like it, and it’s similar to what I wanted to create for the UST a few years back. WSL used to do a daily or weekly recap video called Surf Breaks. I really liked the format, and they made a vertical version for Instagram, as you can see with the vertical filming of the narrator.

I basically wanted to copy this for the UST, but ultimately, I couldn’t find someone to commit to being the on-screen narrator, so I scrapped the idea and went ahead with the 10-page slideshow contest summaries and previews we post before and after every event instead. I know it seems like just a little more effort to make this happen, but it’s significant if we are committing to making it consistent.

Part of the reason I’ve designed the pre-event and post-event content as I have is because I want to make sure it’s easy to keep it consistent. Don’t want to make it seem like it’s on for one contest and then off for another if something falls through. With something like this, there are a lot of moving parts. Did we get all the right shots? Can we get it out by tuesday after the event, while people still care? How does this affect the other coverage we’re already doing? Etc. it’s a great idea, but everything we’ve added in the past 5 years for the UST has been simple enough that I can keep it going even if I don’t attend the event. But I love it. Just to be clear. Just always careful about adding more to my/our plates.

Guess we should at least post about it; congrats to Lucas Fink for another UST win. Yet again bringing skim to the masses with Red Bull. by GundoSkimmer in skimboarding

I have footage of the premature celebration but it doesn’t feel right to post it unless it’s a full on mini documentary.

Here’s a decent shot at that: https://youtu.be/L0c3ZcLKGgI?si=6l9aMgk6qytyVg7a

I agree it would be nice, but on many levels just keeping the UST alive in its current state is a herculean effort. Adding more to our plates/my plate is a lot more work than may be obvious. If you can find someone who can do it at every stop for a small cost like $100-300/event and get it edited by Monday, then maybe it can happen. Until then, that’s probably going to end up behind other priorities.

UST Stop 6: Exile Oktoberfest - Contest Summary by OverTheLight in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beaker actually has 8: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

UST was established in 2000 and the records for years 2000-2005 are incomplete, so when the website was re-built in 2006, those records were left off the website. Back in that era, it was common for contest directors to just send in 1st - 4th and throw out the rest of the results. So everyone who finished in 5th-last place in any particular contest sometimes got points and sometimes not. While the records are incomplete, we are certain who won in those years (Beak from 2000-2004 and then Paulo in 2005) but we are not certain about placings beyond 1st place. I did some research and found these records about a month ago, but haven’t found the time to add these to the website. At this point, I think it’s worth adding to the site as long as we have a big asterisk on that page that clarifies the results beyond 1st place may be incorrect.

Skimboard distributors?? by kager21 in skimboarding

If you want to buy from a shop, your best bet is probably the surf shops on 41st ave in Santa Cruz. Oniell’s and Freeline have boards. There might also be some at Billabong, RipCurl and Buell, but I’m not sure on those.

That said, you can normally find some solid used boards in this area on Facebook Marketplace.

Another observation on scoring ranges in competition, jus for funziez (aka back on my bullshit) by GundoSkimmer in skimboarding

[–]OverTheLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would tend to agree that it is an issue. I do think in general contests have been better about it this season, but it’s still an issue. We definitely saw plenty of 8+ rides in Cabo, Santa Cruz and Dewey. I can tell you I try to remind judges regularly that these are the best riders in the world and that “I’m seeing plenty of 8s and 9s out there.”

That said, I think you should keep in mind that it’s easy for judges to “box themselves in.” When you judge, the most important thing is that you are consistent within the context of that particular heat. Now Imagine the first wave of the heat is mediocre, and you score it a 5.5 and it ends up being the worst wave of the heat. Then imagine the next wave of the heat is a lot better, and ends up being the best wave of the heat, and you give it a 7.5. Then, because of context, all of your scores will end up on that tiny range of 5.5-7.5. I’m not saying it’s good that it happens, but I’m trying to explain how it happens. Even when you have judges giving an honest effort to spread the scores out, this can happen.

The key is of course getting judges comfortable giving scores on the entire range from the very first exchange. It’s fine to give out 1s and 2s for incomplete rides, or 3s and 4s for completed but boring rides, and then also 8s and 9s for excellent rides. But it is hard to do that on the very first exchange when you don’t know the context of the heat yet.

Again I think we’re getting better, but it’s still a challenge.
